The Onkyo HT-5500 is a decent in-expensive and easy to setup receiver/speaker package. Ac4l.com has it as a refurbished item for $259.99 + shipping. It comes with a one year factory warranty. A 3 year extended warranty is $35, 5 years $50. http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/ONKHTS5500/Onkyo-HT-S5500-7.1-Home-Theater-Package-w/USB-for-iPod/iPhone/1.html I've always like the Onkyo HT-540 7.1 speaker package as an in-expensive option. These speakers would be at least a little better then those in the 5500 since they have dual 5" drivers in the fronts and center. Most others aren't quite as enthusiastic about it though. And the price is creeping up. It used to be $149, then $179 and now it's $199. Not quite as good of a deal at that price. I think it came with the HT-780 and HT-800 htib's. But you would still have to add a receiver which would cost at least another $125 so it's more expensive then the 5500. http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/ONKSKSHT540/Onkyo-SKS-HT540-7.1-channel-Home-Theater-Speaker-System/1.html There's also the Denon DHT-1513 which comes with speakers by Boston Acoustics. The subwoofer isn't as powerfull as the Onkyo units but the speakers are from a speaker company and not a company that speciallizes in receivers. http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/DENDHT1513BA/DENON-DHT-1513BA-Home-Theater-System-w/Boston-Acoustics-Speakers/1.html You could also get the Monoprice 5.1E speaker package and a receiver from Newegg.com or ac4l.com. The 5.1E is a re-badged Energy Take Classic system I bet the E in 5.1E stands for Energy. http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=109&cp_id=10906&cs_id=1090601&p_id=9774&seq=1&format=2

Among the "least expensive" options is the Sony SS series(B1000 and CN3000) that together are $140. If you think the surround speakers are less than stellar, buy another pair of B1000. With the remaining $300(if you get a 2nd pair of 1000) there are plenty of AVR to choose from. What devices are you connecting? All HDMI? And only 3? Onkyo RC330. $130+ shipping on Ebay from A4L(buying from A4L on Ebay if often less expensive that buying on A4L's own site...go figure) Have a Wii and need upconversion? I think A4L still has some Denon AVR591. If not, get the Onkyo RC360 if you need upconversion or "more than 3" HDMI.

I would buy these... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Onkyo-HT-RC330-5-1-CHANNEL-HOME-THEATER-RECEIVER-/370770487134?pt=Receivers_Tuners&hash=item5653a4a75e (that is no-brainer cheap) http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SS-B1000-4-Inch-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B000OG88KY/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1362254095&sr=1-1&keywords=ss-b1000 (shows me $64) http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SS-CR3000-Channel-Speaker-Package/dp/B000OG88NQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1362254136&sr=1-1&keywords=ss-cr3000 (I had the model number wrong) That still leaves a nice sum of money for a sub.

Is $500 "fixed"? If so...Dayton Sub1000/1200. BIC V1020/1220 If you can stretch a tad...BIC F12. There is also Lava. "Around $200" there is pretty much only Dayton and BIC. Lava if you want to stretch a tad.

If you'll go up that much... Look into the BIC DV62(two pairs and a V52CLRS would be around $300) and check NewEgg for Polk Monitor(haven't looked at NewEgg in ages to know what Monitors they have...old, version II or "new"). But Polk Monitor, Infinity Primus(if you live close to a Fry) and BIC DV 5.0 set will all cost $300-$400. The RC330 and a sub still keeps you under $700.

It also works to check Craigslist and Ebay(which you can search Ebay by distance to not pay shipping) for some 5.0 set of speakers that somebody needs to sell cause "my GF and I broke up and I need cash"/"Need to buy a starter for my truck"....or any other excuse out there. I picked up a bunch of stuff for $1000 Thursday at an auction. Currently pursing what I got and will re-sell some of it...and I might make close to the $1000 back while keeping the three things I really wanted and the other two things I'll keep...just because.
