I think that form factor matters. I bought one of the first netbooks and took it back to costco the same week. It sucked. I learned form factor matters but so do performance and execution, lesson learned.
I wanted a Macbook Air gen 1 but couldn't afford it at the time, so waited till Gen 2 and I can say that the 13" MBA is truly the best computer I have ever owned. I use it as much or more than my Mac Pro and 17" MBP. Every bit of power I need, 100x the portability.
I am excited to see this come to the PC world in a big way this week so those who haven't gotten on the MBA bandwagon will see why the form factor rules.

We will see a TON of Ultrabook announcements this week.

Still trying to get a video of this AM's not-a-keynote, but here's a good, if skeptical, review:

It seems to me that the ultrabooks are going to be an accurate answer to the MacBook Air remains to be seen whether they have the style of these. One thing is for sure the price is much lower with the same capabilities.
A brand that has always known class creating computers is Asus.
I found the analysis to two new books in http://mixandbrowse.tk/ultrabooks-the-new-hype/ that seem to explain well with what we can hope level of equipment.

Ouch.
None of the 20+ designs shown at IDF last month change this at all.
Once again, Intel rushes in to fix things. No, they didn’t raise the Z-height mandate. No, they didn’t lower their monopoly CPU prices. Instead, they are mandating touch screens. $75 BoM cost increases are being kind here, so a $1200 Ultrabook just became a $1350 Ultrabook. Hint: $699 is in the other direction. Luckily, Intel is also mandating NFC hardware, higher rez screens that suck more power, more expensive batteries to cope with it, gyroscopes, sensors, and lots of other, well, crap. None of this is cheap. $1350? Pipe dream.
In the end, Ultrabooks are badly broken by design and unchangeable by fiat

Why can Apple successfully Sell the Air at the same price and be successful?
