I bought the Ant Commandos adapter for $20 from Amazon and my PS2 GH1 guitar works perfectly with PS3 Rock Band (which I bought used at GameStop for $27). The GH guitar is so much better than the RB guitar it's ridiculous.
I also plan to use my USB mics with Rock Band -- that's the other reason to get Rock Band even if you're playing by yourself; you can play karaoke with it.
Also, Rock Band has those full album downloads. I'll definitely get Screaming For Vengeance, and most likely Who's Next and Moving Pictures when they're released, and maybe Boston too.
As for those long sequences of repeated notes -- I agree they can be a bear. The trick is to hold the strum bar TIGHTLY (don't "flick" it), like a guitar pick, and feel the rhythm instead of trying to follow the symbols.
I also agree that GH3 is harder than Rock Band, but I don't have a problem with that.
