Sounds like he's backed off more than just a bit. It will be exiting to see what a bunch of amateurs who could never justify Final Cut Studio (or for that matter have the time/patience to learn to use the thing) will produce with FCP X. And of course the pros just might do some great work as well.

Speaking of which, I just got a still camera (Sony NEX-5) which supposedly shoots credible video -- i.e. something better than the $4,000 Canon video rig Stephen Soderbergh shot Full Frontal with just a few years ago. Indeed it seems more pros are turning to "still" camera for their video needs -- from what I can tell Carson Daily is shot strictly with Canon SLRs, at least one episode of "House" was shot with a Canon SLR, etc. (I didn't get a video capable SLR because we wanted a camera small enough to carry comfortably -- "best camera is the one you have with you" and all that. )

Grats on the new cam! Problem with the nex5 is that it's an awful small sensor, going wide is going to be tough and expensive! Great little cam tho, incredible IQ if you can get passed the funky ui.

The Mrs. is already complaining is that it is too big (it was supposed to be an easy to carry alternative to our old Canon SLR), so no larger sensor was in the cards, but from what I read, it has a bigger sensor than the "micro 4/3s" format cameras, so it can't be too bad. I just did some low light photography and the results are fantastic. Looking forward to some concert photography.

As for UI, they all suck. That's why I periodically wish that Apple made just about any electronic device. Don't get me started on Denon receivers which I have been using for 20 years.

Denon is notorious for its lousy UI. One of the reasons I've bought Onkyo instead. It's got a marginally useful interface :)

Ha! And I always thought it was just me who had a hard time with my Denon receiver's UI.

BTW, Sam, that class I'm teaching is a corporate job. A company I do some DVD work for hired me to teach a few of them to use the software. Originally it was going to be for FCP7, but they always have the most current software, so we changed it to FCPX. Also, I think it probably makes sense as they aren't a video company and aren't trying to be, so there's no established workflow as far as editing is concerned. They have pro-still photography setups and that seems to be a key part to FCPX, meaning the DSLR video formats, etc.

I'm downloading them now. I haven't been able to find the Apple Pro Training series on these new apps yet though.

Some big pros (it does work fast) and the look and feel of it is easy to get used to. It runs snappy on my wife's MBP.

But on the other hand, the loss of multi-monitor workspace supports sucks (IMHO), but I guess this is how it goes. I see talk of moving bins, but almost every user I know keeps assets and libraries and tools on a monitor and the results on the other..

We'll see.. I'll have to play with it more. Very polished, nice fast and snappy.

Does not import older FCP projects :(

One thing I haven't seen yet is any support for Timelapse integration from stills....

Ars weighs in and suggests that FCP7 users should buy now to get up to speed but understand it may not meet all their needs quite yet.

I've heard a few 3rd parties are rushing to provide interfaces soon, including Aja and Red Giant.

I've been reading all about most of the day. Steve Martin of Ripple Training has a great write-up for "pro" users at kenstone.net.

http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/fcp_x_first_look_martin.html

Because we have an Apple licensing program, I wasn't able to get it and start playing with it today. That makes sense...

I ended up installing an AVID install instead. It's about as far as you can to the other end of the editing software spectrum.

That stinks and may cause a problem for us on some of our systems. Now I have to go check. Blah.

And I guess we know where the leaked screenshots are from now don't we?
