If that's a typo, it's a very complicated typo:

2 HD DVDs mentioned once more, in brackets;
price higher than usual for single HD DVDs;
delivery time longer than usual;
comparable offer by third parties (and none "used").

Has the "regular" 1-disc HD DVD reached that country or would the 2-disc version be their first release of this title?

Interesting.

David, I think that the first disks using the Ultra-Resolution process (which mostly means digital re-registration) were done at 2K, which means Singin' in the Rain, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Meet Me In St. Louis, Gone with the Wind.

The Wizard of Oz was the first one of these done at 4K.

Ahh. I saw a new print of Singing in the Rain which had perfect registration so I assumed it was from the digital-registration/restoration process. Perhaps they printed the 2K digital master back to film? Many digital IPs are only at 2K so that's not out of the realm of possibility... though it doesn't really hold up as an acrchival effort of preservation at just the 2K level.

2K masters could indeed be used for 1080 formats, though downconversion from 4k would look better on printed film and probably even in 1080 as well.

I heard (possibly here) that Warners were so pleased with the 4k on Oz they were thinking of redoing GWTW in 4k, but don't quote me on that.

I remember hearing that too. I think it came out during a Warner HTF chat but I could be wrong.

I haven't seen the HD DVD yet. Before I buy it, if I buy it, can someone please advise me if the color issues pointed out in post #241 of this thread

http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htf/...d.php?t=235246

are duplicated in the HD DVD ?

Is the light filling the Edwards cabin orange or red?

is the color of Monument Valley mustard, yellow, orange, puece or red?

Is there too much yellow in the HD DVD?

Many thanks to everyone who has the time to take a look.

Yes. I've just re-read the first page.

RAH's initial review is encouraging but it does not answer my question.

Is there too much yellow in the HD DVD ?

Is Monument Valley red like it's supposed to be, or some other color?

From what I understand from reading Mr. Harris' interview with the folks who restored this film, the color problems with The Searchers are an issue with a fading negative and at this point there isn't much more that can be done that hasn't already been done. Having said that it seems that this release is very close to the look of the original technicolor prints with some minor differences in the color of the skies.

Richard,

Did you also read Robert Crawford's review on that same first page?

The word "yellow" was definitely used. :)
Richard Harris replied directly to him.

Yes, I read Robert Crawford's remarks and RAH's replies.

Let me phrase my questions differently.

What color is the ground and plateaus in the HD DVD ?

In the Edwards cabin, when Martha says "Let's enjoy the dusk" what color is the light flooding the cabin ?

Based on your comments today, I think you need to see for yourself by renting or borrowing the disc.

No way.
I just bought the standard DVD.
I want to upgrade, but I also want to be sure John Ford's film has been respected before I spend any more money on it.

That's the answer.
I take it you're uncomfortable with my criticism.

Everybody knows I'm right about THE SEARCHERS.

It has been very much respected, IMO.

I've seen The Searchers in the cinema, but a very long time ago, unfortunately. Depending on many factors, including the quality of the film elements, the transfer processes, even the calibration of one's monitor/projector, the colour on the HD DVD can be equal to the original mountains and/or the original film as projected or not. If not, it can be inacceptably much deviating or not to the film-lover watching it.

But who can describe it sufficiently to you? As said, I think they respected Ford's material very much. How far that has brought them, given the technical possibilities at their disposal, may differ to your opinion and mine.

I agree with those who said: take a look yourself. If you love this film, chances are that you will get pleasantly surprised.

???

Well, I don't even understand what you mean. The colour aspect? But you haven't even seen the HD DVD yet, didn't you?
Or something else? Something important we need to know?

Not really, that's your opinion. As far as everybody thinking you're right, that's debatable, but at this time, I have no inclination to do so.
