I think we're talking about two completely different things here. I'm not talking about the content of the scene at all.

How is the scene awkward?

Hit on nurse for "help". Check
Warm up metal tube. Check
Join in on mutual camaraderie. Check

My point on the content of the scene is irrelevant. Sure they could have had some magazines(they don't???). Maybe videos. A take home kit.

Here is my take on why the bathroom masturbation(and why it was edited was a joke) scene is necessary.1. The entire movie is about doing "firsts".2. Every pilot/astronaut knows today could be it.3. A scene is thrown in the movie that brings home point 2.You May not be here tomorrow, give us semen.

Doesn't John Glenn humm/sing the same song in both the masturbation and the re-rentry scenes? If so, that alone makes it worth it by linking the two sides of astronaut's dehumanizing routines/heroisms.

JMHO.

And, yes, this is now officially the oddest thread at HTF. And that's saying something.

Anyone know how this release outputs the 96K sound upsampling? I know many have said it is featured on this BLU release but their settings show 48 instead?

Probably Dolby paid big bucks to Warner's to use their upsampling technology and spread the word about it. According to the Dolby White Paper on it, assuming I read it right, it's intended to upconvert to 96K in order to implement their pre-ringing filter and help clean up the sound of 48K original material but then remain at 96K for your processor to decode to analog. Maybe it still sounds better after doing that, even when downconverting the 96K back to 48K for release, but seems bogus to do that last step. The San Francisco Symphony concert where this was used last year was released at 96K.

Since Dolby is doing plenty of its own promotion for this title, I doubt any money changed hands. They've just reached a mutually beneficial arrangement where both have agreed to promote each other.

FYI:

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has become aware of and confirmed that The Right Stuff 30th Anniversary Blu-ray Book released on Nov. 5, 2013 went to market without the 96K upsampling feature enabled. Steps are being taken to resolve the issue at the current time.

I also originally saw this movie in 70mm Dolby 6-track in New York (probably at the old Beekman, since it didn't play at the preferred 70mm theaters like the Ziegfeld, Orpheum or Astor Plaza) and loved every minute of it, including (maybe especially) the mixed tone.

If they took this movie totally seriously and filled it with a bunch of known Hollywood actors, it would have been like "The Towering Inferno" or some garbage like that. I thought the film was brilliant and look forward to seeing it on BD.

I remember at the time, John Glenn's handlers were initially troubled by the film's release - they thought it would hurt his political aspirations. But surveys demonstrated that people who saw the film thought more highly of Glenn after seeing the film - especially women who liked the way the Glenn character defended his wife in the movie.

I believe that Tom Wolfe's book (or excerpts from it) was originally published in Rolling Stone.

I never understood the love for "Terms of Endearment" and even though Nicholson's performance was praised, I felt like he walked through the picture. Maybe the Academy got confused since he played an ex-astronaut.
Yeah, that's how I remember it, too. Some people thought the movie would make Glenn look bad and be a hack job, which it wasn't. Sure, it made him look square - and a bit like a self-promoter, in the press conference scene - but it mostly makes you think he's a solid, stand-up hero.

And not just because of the space scenes - the one in which he tells the PR and LBJ people to leave his wife alone would qualify him as a hero alone!

WOW talk about a major flub! ESP when they stickered the release proclaiming the audio up sampling. At least they are working to fix the issue.

When I bought my copy from BB I received the 48k sound. I wrote WB customer service and yesterday I received the correct 96k sound version. I probably will not notice with my tinnitus and all. But at least I have what I paid for.

I listened to the opening sequence and I thought it sounded excellent.

Received my corrected copy a few days ago. Many thanks to Sherri Bogard and WB!
Mine is on the way after receiving a nice acknowledgement email from Ms. Bogard.

I picked up my replacement Blu-Ray yesterday. Sherri Bogard is now 2 for 2, with this and "The Bishop's Wife". She's so pleasant and efficient that I'm hoping that Warner's quality control stays mildly depressed. I picture the brothers Warner looking down from a cloud somewhere, pleased to still have old-school Hollywood grace and class emanating from their dream factory.
