So...the animated portions of MARY POPPINS have been effed with? Does it look as bad as what they did to poor PINOCCHIO?:-(

I'm a firm believer in respecting the original creators' wishes, and not messing with films. Everything should be left as was.

But for the life of me, I just don't see this spoiling my (or my kids') enjoyment of Mary Poppins.

Doug Bull: At low resolution like that, the line blacking isn't as apparent. But based on the light lines on the horse's muzzle and tail, I would guess your DVD grab hasn't been monkeyed with. Do you have a frame in full 720x480 size?

I'll be away for a few days, so unless somebody else can scan the older DVD or better still the new Blu-ray (which I'm unable to do) then I'll see what I can do when I get back.

Is the original sound blare with the "Buena Vista" distribution blue preamble title which precedes the credits included? It's a small thing-doesn't really matter, but it heightened the excitement everytime.

It's a big thing to me. I am delighted and relieved that it has been restored. Removing it from the DVD was a horrible choice by Disney. In fact, I watched the older Gold Edition for the sole reason that it retained it.

The original Buena Vista fanfare is a huge deal. I'm so glad it's back because to me it is part of the overture music. It sounds like they got it right for the most part on this. I'm concerned about redoing the lines in the animation and I hate that Disney has been doing this on all their animated titles. Warner Bros. does not do this on their bluray Looney Tunes as far as I know and I'm thrilled about this.

The Looney Tunes blu-rays put Disney to shame.

I'm gonna take a look at Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life, which contains images from both Poppins and 101 Dalmatians, as I don't consider it fair ball to compare a still of Cruella DeVil to the Blu-ray image from Mary Poppins. 101 Dalmatians has a deliberately rough, sketchbook quality to its lines, while other, later Xeroxed titles have more refinement to the lines. You can see that from the frame scan above. I look at what has been done with the animation lines in Mary Poppins and question the wisdom of crying foul as yet.

I've seen cels of the Pearly Band in person. The lines don't look like that. Animator forums are up in arms about this, as well as the past couple of xerox films Disney has massacred. This is a trend. They're long past benefit of the doubt.

Maybe that's a slight overstatement. What do you think?

I thought you intimated that in Jane Eyre, Stevenson had let Orson Welles do most of the directing. Is the other side then where Stevenson is minimally engaged?

I'm currently in London and Mary Poppins has had a big screen reissue here in the UK. I went yesterday and sadly was the only one in the theatre! I couldn't believe it!

I got a message from Amazon that my Mary Poppins Blu-ray has been delayed in transit due to inclement weather. :-(

That's so sad! When The Sound of Music played on the big screen here in the US, I was one of about only about 8 people at an evening screening. But to be fair it had been poorly promoted.

But as to the screening of MP, how was the picture and sound?
