Hello everyone...This is my first post and I would like to use the knowledge you all have. I have A pioneer VSX 850S receiver and a pioneer c503 5 disc dvd player.(use for cd's and dvd) I have all athena speakers for 6.1 surround.(asf1-front,afc1-center and 3 asb1's for rear surround and rear center) I found the speakers to sound much better at the store on the Harman kardon they use. I want to upgrade my receiver and dvd player. The receiver is really the one I want help to decide. I was looking at a Denon 1804 or 1604 and a Yamaha 5660 or a 5590. I noticed that the yamaha 5590 has 192kHz/24 DAC and the others had 96khz DACs. What is the diff. and is it actually noticable? Do you have to get a dvd player with the same output to get the benefit of the receiver? Basically is the 192khz something I really need.

Thanks
Jay

Jason,

Since there's no means for getting a 192kHz stereo signal into any of these products, it's not necessary.

However, given that current generation DACs are available with that capability using "over spec" parts enables identical parts usage across a broad range of receiver and DVD products.

192KHz ADCs might be useful though if you have the need to digitize an analog source such as phono or (not advisable I know).

But 192KHz DACs ... as John said ...

There are a number of stereo, 24 bit, 192KHz sample rate audio disks available. At this time, I don't think there are any players that can output a stereo 24/192 digital bitstream, but that may change in the (near) future.

Dan,

True. The discussion was about the inclusion of 24/192K parts in a receiver that has no path to receive 24/192K content though ;)

Cheers,
