Ever since it was explained that the new device will most likely contain a "near 8" screen" and will maintain the "friendly for reading" 4:3 aspect ratio, I've warmed up to the idea; and I now admit that it's practically inevitable that an iPad Mini will be released in the very near future.
The "success" of the Nexus 7 (I personally believe that the reported "shortages" have been at least somewhat manufactured) seems to drive the point home that Apple needs a "bottom dweller" in the iPad line -- as indicated in the above linked story.

A recent Talk Show discussed this. Gruber argues against arguments against a $199 price point, and says shouldn't compare iPad mini to iPod Touch line.

I still see a gaping hole between the $199 start price and the $499, and think there needs to be a solid $299 device there. And despite the $199 Nexus 7, it still seems weird to sell what is otherwise a $399 iPad 2 for $199, albeit with 7" screen.

In any case, I laid out my pricing guesses earlier. We'll see what happens. If anything happens.

Here's one part of that that I hadn't considered: Would Apple do a mid cycle refresh of the iPad where the ONLY change is a dock connector?

Instead of fussing about screens or gimmick-value new features, I wish Apple would bring out an iPad with a decent memory capacity. 62GB goes nowhere.

What, inexpensive removable storage is a bad thing? Better to pay $100 for 32GB?
