This game is Mine !

I don't have Socom, so I'd appreciate any input that others have as well. It's been the topic of discussion before, and it had been decided that it was 16:9, but perhaps we need to revisit it.

Thanks,

It's not 16:9, trust me. I've reduced the overscan on my set and if a game isn't widescreen, I'll see crap on the side of my set, and this game has crap on the side.
SOCOM *IS* 16:9, regardless whether they "cheated" by elongating things in 4:3 mode. The game looks great in widescreen on my tv, i am missing no info when compared to the 4:3 picture (i switched back and forth)...the 16:9 picture looks far better proportionally, too.

Well, that's not entirely accurate. All video games have to protect for underscan, and I've noticed that some games do this more than others, so that you might have very thin black bars on the sides. This has nothing to do with 4:3 or 16:9, I've seen it on both.

As far as the 16:9 v. 4x3 thing on Socom goes...

Just because it "looks" good in 16x9 does not mean the game is "true 16x9".

THERE IS NO WAY YOU COULD HAVE THE EXACT SAME IMAGE FILL BOTH A 4x3 AND a 16:9 SCREEN WHILE RETAINING ITS GEOMETRY.

It is just physically impossible.

If you want to argue that Socom "looks" better in 16x9, that is your right. I actually agree (see my above post).

But since there is no setting in the Socom software for screen size, and changing the PS2 "dashboard" does not affect the aspect ratio, it follows that Socom was built as a 4x3 game.

Now you could "sorta" argue that it is ONLY a 16x9 game (cuz it looks better wide), but then why wouldn't SOCOM have an option for "letter-boxed" play on 4x3 sets? Since I'd bet about 95% of people are still "stuck" with square TV's.
thank you, thank you, thank you! I've been saying SOCOM isn't 16x9 and everyone disagrees with me here

I've never been able to get this game in widescreen mode. The thing is, it's not really hard to tell. When you switch between 16x9 and 4x3, do you actually see more date/scenery/etc on the sides?

Seems very thorough for the X-box but not the PS2 or Gamecube. Does anyone know the stats on: Kingdom Hearts, Dark Cloud, Rez, or Ratchet & Clank

With very few exceptions, PS2 titles are only added if they include a notable option, such as 16x9 or online play. Kingdom Hearts, Dark Cloud, and Rez are 4:3. I haven't heard anything about Ratchet & Clank.

Sorry that was for PS2, NHL2002.

Odd that it hasn't been mentioned here but, The Getaway, as initially reported is NOT progressive.

That was a big reason I bought the game and have found zero information on a progressive mode.

It is 16x9 though.

I think the confusion stems from the UK version being 540p. I guess Sony decided the USA didn't deserve progressive.

So your saying The Getaway on Xbox isn't progressive? That doesn't sound right.

The Getaway was developed by Sony's Soho Studio and is a Playstation 2 exclusive...

Damn, I thought it was on Xbox too, oh well looks like another game I won't be getting. Maybe I've been spoiled by big screen, and super clean graphics from xbox, I just can't play my PS2 anymore.

By The Way

Devil May Cry 2
480p no
16x9 no
DD 5.1 no!

That's it, no more PS2 titles unless all of those are YES!!!

Just so I am clear on this... For the Dreamcast, the only output option with 480p is the VGA output, correct? In other words, there is no component output or anything that I could use to directly connect a DC to an RPTV set that accepts 480p, right?

Also -- that being said -- there is no way to do 480p AND 16:9 on the DC, right? For those titles that support both, it would always be an either/or situation, correct?

Thanks!

You will need to use a VGA adapter for 480p output. If your tv doesn't accept VGA input, you can get a VGA to component adapter from Audio Authority. I'd provide a link, but I can't get to the site at the moment. They are kinda pricey, but they fetch $80-90 on eBay.

AFAIK, F355 Challenge is the only Dreamcast game that you have to choose 480p or 16:9. The other games can run both at the same time, provided they support 480p and 16:9.

Really? Wow -- that's surprises me -- but it sounds quite cool.

It just seems odd that they would program support in for something that would be so difficult to use -- anyone wanting to do 480p and 16:9 with a DC would pretty much have to buy a component adapter, right? I mean, there aren't any 16:9 480p VGA monitors that I know of -- and I've certainly never heard of one connected to a DC...

So -- am I missing something? Or was that the original coder's intent? That someone might just connect the VGA box to a component adapter so that it could be given as 480p input to a 16:9 device? That seems odd, yes?

Dave: Yes, but I guess that is my question: Are there any DC games that are 480p AND 16:9? You seem to be saying that they were before -- and that seems odd to me.

Oddly enough, I've actually done some minor DC development -- although nothing 16:9 related. I haven't seen anything about progessive mode 16:9 on the DC before this post -- so that is why I was surprised to see that games are allegedly supporting it!

So, I'm still curious about exactly what is being supported. I can see 640x480 VGA mode from the DC -- but I'm just not sure what the 16:9 would be -- and whether or not that would be progressive...

I'll just edit my prior post to avoid confusion.
