No problemo Dave, you're right the game does look pretty good in 16:9, It's interesting that the pc version had a letterbox option in the game so you could see the sides to bad they did'nt carry that over when they ported this.

Is there a list that includes the HD format and details
on all future games? Sorry if this was asked already and I just missed it..

A list of details for upcoming games would be pretty much impossible to keep accurate. Most announcements (if there even is one) are vague, wrong, or both.

Gunvalkyrie ist still listed with 16:9 = yes. I am 100% sure it's not anamorphic 16:9 (the game switches to widescreen mode, but if you look hard enough you will find out that your character looks strange and stretched).

Yep, you are correct. Here's what I did to verify this: My 'box is set to widescreen, so I loaded up the first level with Kelly as a reference shot. From her starting position, I measured the distance between the two angular points on her back. With the tv in 16:9 mode, the distance was 5.5 inches. In 4:3 mode, the distance was 4.25 inches. I then switched the 'box to "Normal" (boo MS! ) and reloaded the same level & measured the same distances. Widescreen: 5.5 inches. 4:3 mode: 4.25 inches.

If the game was widescreen, the proportions would've been different between the two Xbox settings.

I should've caught this a while ago - I even posted a rant about how Sega has a tendency to make their game characters overly tall and skinny (re: Beach Spikers, NFL 2k3), but still didn't make the connection. Oh well...

dave-
there's been a lot of "discussion" about whether Unreal Championship is "really" 16:9. i was just wondering if you had done any similar measurements for UC. specifically, of the backgrounds: do you get a wider field of view from a particular location when in 16:9? or for things that should be perfectly circular, are they? i have a friend that swore to me that both Halo and UC were definitely 16:9. until i pointed out the circle thing. she actually measured and found out she didn't have 16:9... she had gotten so used to watching regular TV in stretched mode, she couldn't tell ellipses from circles.

everybody says "yep. 16:9", but no one has discussed wider fields of view, or measured circles.

thanks.

(can you tell i haven't gotten UC to work as 16:9?)

I have done similar things with UC, and I now have a conspiracy theory.

I used that CTF map with the big circular buildings as a reference. When the tv was in 16:9 mode, the buildings were horizontally stretched, which would indicate a 4:3 game. However, in 4:3 mode, the buildings were vertically stretched! So frankly, I don't know which it should be. It's like things were stretched vertically a little bit so that they would look decent in both 4:3 and 16:9.

My conspiracy theory is that some developers are purposely desigining some things to be ambiguous. That's probably more work than it's worth, so it's probably just a crazy idea, but I have a lot of free time on my hands & if I don't have at least one crazy theory floating around my head, I just don't feel right.

I don't want to read through nine pages to see if these has been addressed but SSX: Tricky and GTA Vicecity for PS2 are not in DTS 5.1 they are actually in DTS 4.0. If anyone has a receiver that will tell how many channels it's decoding can confirm this. I have a 49tx and it only
lights up the L R lights on the display.

Sorry I need to correct myself the games are in 4.1 not 4.0 but there aren't any dedicated .1 LFE signals. I've never seen my 49tx's LFE light light up when playing a video game. My receiver will light up when it detects an lfe signal like a bass drum hit or explosion in a movie. So these games are sending an LFE signal but it's just straight 0's there are no 1's in the signal. The only sound coming from the sub is a bass mix of the other channels below 80Hz (my crossover point). I'm play Vice City right now that's how I know.

I'm going to change the sound column. I was going to name it "Discrete Surround", but even then it'd be a pain in the arse.

Unless someone has objections, sound will be noted for anything "greater" than standard Dolby Prologic. For titles that meet that criteria, the type will be listed. Such as:
DPL II
DD 5.1
DTS 5.1

From now on, please note the sound type with any submissions.

I'll try update this change in the grid on Sunday, but I'm putting together a new PC then, so no promises. =)

XBox -

NCAA Basketball 2k3 (Sega)

480p: yes
16:9: yes
DD5.1: yes
online: yes

Doesn't look as pretty as NBA 2k3, but plays a little better and more fun IMO (I like the college flow of the game better). No 720p support like NBA 2k3 either, but most couldn't use that anyway. Game is certainly 16:9, but replays look kinda stretched. Back of case has 480p/HDTV checked (indicating 16:9 support).

For those of you with Sony sets...

You can check to see what signal (480i/p, 720p, or 1080i) your set is getting by going into the service menu. With the power off, press "Display", "5", "volume up", "Power" in rapid succession. (for most Sony's)

SOCOM DOES NOT SUPPORT 16:9 - I read here that it does and decided to test it. (I've spent many hours with this game). It does support 480p, but when changing the PS2 setting back to 4:3, the game looks exactly the same. I think what they did, is cheat...

...if you look at Socom on a 4:3 set it appears slightly elongated (meaning people, objects and circles look slightly taller than you would think. Thus, when you switch to full screen 16:9, things look only slightly wider than they might look in real life. Probably a good compromise...

...a good compromise, because if the game truly supported 4:3 and 16:9, that would mean that those of us with a wide-screen set would be getting more* picture than those with a standard set. In online play, this would be giving the wide screen players a huge advantage.

*or less if they did it by cropping.
