"There's no indicator on my Sony XBR to tell if it's progressive (that I know of). "

The only way I know of is to hit your DRC controls, either MODE or PALETTE buttons, if the source is in Progressive Scan the line doubler will not function (i.e. function as selectable, the TV will automatically select the progressive DRC and the remote won't change it) therefore these buttons will do nothing.

Any idea what the specs for Midtown Madness 3 will be? Hopefully either 720p or 1080i.... or at the least 480p(16:9) otherwise it's not a purchase...

Thanks Vincent Grill - for digging up my question and answering it! I hadn't heard an answer to that yet, I'll try it.
UC looks great in 16:9 mode guys, by the way.

Some dedicated XBox hackers have gotten VGA working on:

Hitman 2
MLB Slugfest
The Thing
Antz Racing

...but not on 007. All they did was change a couple of bytes in the code (actually, a standard default.xbe file that each application has) to enable progressive output (there is a 480p output flag). This means that these programs already used 640x480p frame buffers.

Kind of ticks me off, poor programming, poor Quality Assurance. All of these games could have been 480p with no additional effort. 007 might use an interlaced frame buffer. Progressive DVD is working also.

Of course you need a modded XBox to do this. I just thought the information about these games having a simple bug or error would be interesting to some of you...
Yeah, I played through Hitman 2 in 480P. Pretty awesome what a small chip can do to the XBOX, but then again, we're not supposed to talk about that here.
Donald,

I don't think it's ever been a big deal talking about mods in the Gaming area of HTF as long as we aren't talking about piracy.

There's a lot of non-piracy functionality that XBox mod chips give. I'm looking forward to getting one myself once I'm confdent about the online situation.

Michael,

It probably isn't a big deal to talk about mod chips in this FORUM, but it shouldn't be discussed in this THREAD, since it would be completely off-topic.

Let's keep this thread for 16:9 yes/no reports only.

Um, I think I know what the thread is for, I was the original keeper of the original thread.

This thread is also for 480p and other high-res modes, and I reported that with a mod-chip, there are ways to play certain 480i XBox games in 480p. Therefore the discussion was on-topic.

Geez.

You are kidding me about progressive DVD output on the XBox!?! What thread or website might I go to find out more information about this mod chip? And if it's so simple, why in the *^(*& didn't Microsoft enable progressive DVD output in the first place????

Thanks

Brian, I sent you a PM.

I believe I read somewhere Microsoft got pressure from manufacturers of progressive scan dvd players not to release a under $300 dollor gaming machine that could also output progressive DVD video just as easily as their stand alone players near the same price or much higher.

No, other companies could not push Microsoft around like that. It was a legal issue, dealing with the the hardware's inability to run macrovision when outputting a 480p signal.

Didn't see this one on the list: NBA Live 2003 (Xbox)

480p - yes
Widescreen - no
DD5.1 - yes
Star Wars Bounty Hunter (GameCube)

480p: yes
16:9: no
DPLII: yes

Unreal Championship widscreen does not look so good. It appears the development team reworked the player models to look good in widescreen mode but let the environments, weapon crosshairs and HUD stretch to fill your view. I have a Sony 10HT and prefer to play it in normal mode.
hmm....that's odd, i've been playing a lot of UC and i think it looks great in 16:9.

i'll have to check out the backgrounds later tonight.

Static overlays such as HUDs and crosshairs will usually be stretched, as they aren't rendered on the fly. For example, the HUD in Rallisport is stretched.

Can you explain what you mean by stretching the environment?

It's tedious, but if you switch xbox and TV modes from the different aspect ratios, it does not appear to me that I am gaining any FOV in the 16:9 setting. I can see a difference in the player models themselves, though.

You may try going to a specific location in a map (with bots off) and take notes of what you see and how things look. Then change your settings (xbox and TV) to normal aspect and see how things appear to you. You can try looking at bridges or other environmental objects and try and judge whether they look stretched or not. A red or blue team sign may be another thing to look for.

Becauase of the way I think the programmers developed the game and with the exception to the player models themselves, you actually don't have to alter the setting on the xbox to see the environment stretch. Just switch your TV setting. You may notice the player bots looking skinny or stretched.

My screen does not look as sharp in 16:9 mode either. It's not that it's blurry it's just not as sharp. With DVD's, I don't see this kind of change in PQ when changing ratios like I do with UC.

Didn't see this on the main list, so:

Phantasy Star Online (GameCube):

480p-yes
16:9-no
DPLII-yes
Online-yes
I just learned that the new Zelda will be 480p. I have no info yet on if it will have Widescreen. I'm keeping my fingers crossed though!

Nope, both games are 480p.

I think the confusion comes from the boxes having the "HDTV 480p" option unchecked. Either this was an oversight, or they are requiring the title to also be 16:9. Both titles are definitely 480p.

-Dave
I think they are requiring both as Minority Report is both 16:9 and 480p and has the HDTV 480p box checked. IMO, this labeling is as confusing as the old HDTV only logo, since we all know that while we expect all Xbox games to be 480p, it's not always the case.
Serious Sam (Xbox)
480p-yes
16:9-no
DD 5.1-yes

HD and home theater aside this game also supports system link with both cooperative and deathmatch modes. This is not an Xbox Live title.

You can stop cutting off the blood supply to your fingers--it doesn't support 16:9.

Now I'm going to go and cry...

Add Guilty Gear XX to the PS2 Progressive Scan support list. Doubtful on the 16:9, 5.1 front.

I am stumped on Serious Sam (Xbox). For the time being, I'm listing the 16x9 field as questionable. I think it isn't 16x9, but it looks really good in 16x9. I'll do some fiddling with some A/B tests tomorrow, but if anyone has any impressions, please chime in.

Edit: I'm a dork. I didn't even see Derek's post that is just a few posts above mine. Sorry about that, Derek!
