Anyone have info on EA Sports NHL 2003 for the Xbox?

16:9????

Also, Sega's NHL 2k3 comes out on the 19th. Every other Sega 2k3 game has been 16:9, so hopefully this one will as well!

Timesplitters 2 (GC)

16x9: no
480p: no
DPL-II: ?
I have played through MGS2:Substance and I can say it definitely has it's ups and downs in comparison to the PS2 version. There is some slow-down in gameplay but some of the FMV's and such look better and a lot less compressed. But anyway, on to what it supports:

480p = yes
DD 5.1 = yes
16x9 = no
Dumb question guys, how do you tell if a movie is 480p or not?
Anyone know if FIFA 2003 (XBox) is 16:9? It's frustrating having a 16:9 TV and only Sega GT (that I own) supports it. And the 2 player looks terrible cause it's so wide. NFS: Hot Pursuit 2 supports side by side 2 player, but not 16:9, arggh!!!

Fred -

The Xbox does not output 480p for DVD movies, only 480i. You'll need a dedicated, standalone progressive scan DVD player to watch movies @ 480p.
Jon, I'm sorry, I actually meant to ask about XBox games, not movies. I know movies will all be 480p if I have a player, but with XBox games how do you tell? There's no indicator on my Sony XBR to tell if it's progressive (that I know of).
Fred -

Gotcha. For games, I hit the info button on my remote and the display tells me what the resolution is (as well as the time, input, channel, etc).

Not sure about your model, maybe someone else with a Sony XBR can help out.

a couple more things on tiger woods 2003 -

it's definitely NOT 16:9. i did some tests and the proportions of the characters are definitely stretched on a 16:9 tv (and there is no game option to change it).

I also think i know why that guy mentioned in a previous thread might have returned it saying it looked bad (thinking it wasn't progressive)....it *is* progressive, but looks REALLY dark. Even on the daytime courses. the character animations especially seem really murky, while the opening game animation is amongst the worst i've seen on a next-gen console (dreamcast could have done better). the actual in-game graphics aren't bad and the smoothness of camera movement reflects good 480p, but there's just an overall shadowey-dark look to the whole game that I found distracting.

FIFA 2003 XBOX

480P: Yes
16x9: I believe this game is 16x9 unlike World Cup for Xbox, but I am not certain. Some menu screens and boot screens are not 16x9 but the gameplay looks good. If it is stretched, it is hard to tell. Other opinions on this?

I'm with you Kevin, FIFA is definetively 480p and IT SEEMS to be 16x9 and if it's not they they very good job streching the picture
post #161 of 719
Dave, I appreciate you keeping this chart up and running, but it's been a few weeks since information has been added to the 'main page' about some Gamecube titles listed here and even from the previous list. Most notably:

Animal Crossing 480p
Mario Party 4 480p
NBA 2K3 480p/16:9

I'm guessing they flew in under the radar and hope you don't mind this innocent reminder. Thanks,

Pieter

House of the Dead 3 (XBox)

480P: yes
16x9: no
DD51: yes

And, yes, I bought the mad catz gun for my Panasonic PT56WXF95A. That's a widescreen 56" rear projection tv, btw. Anyway, I try a variety of things to get the gun to work. In 480p or scan doubled 480i from my xbox hdtvpack, I could get the gun to point at the screen and have it see a signal. No matter where I pointed the gun it would only track a signal in the left third of the screen no matter how I had it stretched. Seemed like just a timing issue that could be worked out by a manufacturer for a 480p only gun. *shrug* Too bad really. Anyway, my panny has a "game" mode that turns off the scan doubler, so I tried that as well. I can only use game mode when using composite or svid, btw... Anyway, I kindof got the gun working like that. It worked best when I had the gray bars on the left and right. Better, but still not good enough to play the game with. I could calibrate the gun so when I pointed at the center, it would shoot there. But when I moved the gun left or right, the tracking of the crosshairs moved way left or way right. So, I could kind of play, but I wasn't really aiming where I was shooting. The left/right tracking was very exaggerated. I am guessing that the gun will probably work with a normal 4:3 rear projection big screen tv if the brightness is turned up a bit. Then again, on my wide screen, it just seemed weird. I suppose I know a guy who has one of those, I can try it out if I get any personal requests. Anyway, if you want a gun game for the XBox on your rear projection HDTV, you'll have to play with the controller for now. And really, the controller tracking is much better than I thought. I didn't think it would be that accurate, but the game is still pretty fun.

I read rumors that Sega might have their own controller out (unless that is gone now), as well as saw a google cached page from a web store selling a Pelican Accessories light gun for the XBox. Can't find any info on that from Pelican's site however and the original page is gone, too. And last rumor is that MS had some gun demoing at the TGS show. *shrug* If can get my hand on another gun, I'll buy and let you know what I find.

ToeJam & Earl III is most definately DD 5.1, at least the demo is. I have Dolby Digital lock and voices are definately coming out of the rears.

ATV Offroad Fury 2 (PS2)

16x9:NO
480p:YES!
DD 5.1:Not sure, but I would have to say NO.
Online:YES (up to 4 players, 56k or broadband)

Does anyone know if Resident Evil 0 supports 480P and 16:9?
Xbox

Mech Assault

480p- Yes
16:9- No
DD5.1- Yes (One of the best)

Ghost Recon
480p- Yes
16:9- No
DD5.1- Yes

Ghost Recon is another title that doesn't have the HDTV 480p box checked, but is in fact 480p. Maybe the title has to support 16:9 as well as 480p to be considered HDTV 480p.
wow, i'm disappointed (and surprised) that the 2 Xbox LIve launch titles (Ghost Recon / Mech Assault) aren't 16:9.

I've been noticing that even the 480p XBOX games don't look much better than PS2 games if they aren't 16:9 enhanced.
Scott -

I picked up Mech Assault today, but held off on Ghost Recon...not knowing if either were 16:9 or not.

I'm waiting to break the seal on the game until I hear that it looks good @ 16:9, there's not too many static images, it's fun, etc etc... Do you have a second to give us a quick run down on both games? Do they stretch to 16:9 pretty good? Are they fun to play online (for someone that's been used to PC shooters for 5yrs). etc etc.

Thanks

Edit:

Nevermind. I opened up MechAssault and have been playing it for the past couple of hours. Visually, it's not bad and if you start it in stretched mode and leave it there, you won't know any better.

As for the game itself, I'm already bored to tears. The single player mode probably wouldn't keep me busy more than a rental, and the online player mode (the only reason to buy a game like this) got boring after 15 minutes. All of the game modes are essentially the same thing. Run around in circles straffing your opponents with the fire button permanently on. No real skill involved, or strategy of any type. Guess I'll take it back to EB tomorrow and exchange it for Ghost Recon. Although, if that one sucks too, then I'm stuck with it. Maybe I'll trade it in for a NHL 2k3 preorder.

I can't understand MS not supporting 16x9. I've posted my impressions of MA elsewhere I like it for what it is. My concern guys thou is with the HUD images. There is no way to decrease the image of the hud. I'm concerned with burn in. My Mits is calibrated, some of MA is dark so I adjusted the contrast down and the Brightness up a tad, but still its probably ok, but I played this sucker for 4 hours last night. Anyone else concerned that burn in might be a Prob?

About Ghost Recon in 480p

The back of the box CLEARLY shows that it doesn't support 480p. I had it on last night and I really couldn't tell one way or the other.

Mike, Ghost Recon is 480p. There are 3 games that I'm aware of right now that don't have the HDTV 480p box checked, MGS2, Phantom Crash, and Ghost Recon. All of which support 480p, the only thing I can think of is that the title has to support 16:9 as well as 480p to be considered HDTV 480p.

About NFL2k3 X-Box being 16:9...

I have had a problem with NFL2k3 where it leaves ~1/2 inch black bars on the left and right sides of the screen on my Toshiba 50H81. I e-mailed Sega to ask them about this, and this was their response:

Quote:
Thank you for e-mailing Sega Technical Support. I do apologize for the inconvenience with NFL2K3. This game does not support a widescreen format. You may want to try standard mode or letterbox on your Xbox dash board. Thank you for your support and have a nice day.
Sincerely,
Matthew

This has been confusing to me as well. It looked like they tried to come up with a standard listing of features for each game then let the developers check what they supported. The 3 games you mentioned that do not have the HDTV-480p checked is contradictory to past uses of the HDTV and HDTV-480p symbol. It makes you wonder if they even know what it is other than believing it is just the flavor of the day and it must be put on the box.

We really need some quality control and a consistant method for labeling what games do and do not support. I will not buy a game for the Xbox that is not 480p capable and if it weren't for this forum, I would have passed up on Ghost Recon because of the labeling.
