'THE STEPFATHER' - Who owns the rights?

Who owns the rights to this above average horror film from the 80s starring Terry O'Quinn? My tape is about shot.

Thanks.

Esten,
I am sorry I don't know. But what I do know, is that I would love this on DVD. Maybe in one cool box-set. Can you say Anchor Bay. How many are there in this series? I believe that there were 3, correct?

So, count me in as well.

I may have an answer for you...New Century/Vista, I believe, originally released the film, and Embassy Home Entertainment held the video rights before they changed hands. ITC actually produced the film, so ownership of at least the ancilliary rights are now held by Carlton International Media (which bought the ITC library some years back). Hope this answers your question.

All the ITC films (with the exception of THE MUPPET MOVIE) have been released by Artisan (films like ON GOLDEN POND and THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL). Hopefully, they'll get up off their duffs and do something with it one of these days.

Artisan has done SOME really good discs, like The Limey, for example. However, I agree their track record is definitely spotty.

I've been thinking a lot of this movie after watching Lost with Terri O'Quinn.
Wonder why it is not out yet.
MGM owns the rights, I think.
I hope someone gets it out soon. Like Mikel said, Terry O'Quinn is on Lost now. That may help grease the wheels a little bit. They could put STARRING LOST'S TERRY O'QUINN on the cover larger than the title of the movie

Good lordy. 2 1/2 years ago. No wonder I don't remember starting this.

I've since gotten a nice anamorphic swedish DVD of the film. Looks very good, actually.

THE STEPFATHER turns up on IFC just about once a week or so.

Your Swedish disc is anamorphic? If so could you tell me where to get it? I have the ancient Nelson laserdisc and also the R4 from Australia but it's still P&S.
I also own the Anamorphic DVD. I imported the last one. The DVD has been put OOP.

It is a nice DVD though. It's the best I have seen the movie look. Such a shame the other DVD's available stink. You will have to do some searching for this one.

A set is also sold with all three movies in a box. This is still in production, but hard to find. It's pricey and the sequels stink which is why I didn't get it.
Figures it would be out of print when I discover it! Guess I'll have to live with my crappy P&S versions for now.

I actually got it in a trade over a year ago, from someone in Sweden, so I couldn't help you on where to get it. The back says it's by a company called Atlantic, if that's any help.

I must say that this movie held up pretty well for me.

Terry O'Quinn is just great. He really did a good job in this movie. Someone else could have really botched up the role. Remember the dude from Stepfather 3?

I tend to like his roles. He did a good job in Alias Season 2. He is also doing a good job on Lost.

He even did a good job in Stepfather 2, but that movie just doesn't mold well for me. The cast isn't that bad. The story isn't that bad. It just doesn't work.

OK, thanks anyway. Guess I'll just wait for the R1. Hopefully, as someone mentioned previously, O'Quinn's exposure from Lost may speed up it's release.

The "Who am I here?" line has to be one of the great scenes for any actor.

Yeah, that's a classic moment....and a pretty chilling one, too.

Fangoria reports that there's going to be a Stepfather remake (ugh). Anyway, hopefully this remake will produce a DVD release for the original (and maybe the sequels).

Can't wait to see what loser they choose to try and fail miserably at bettering Terry O'Quinn's fantastic performance.

Re: 'THE STEPFATHER' - Who owns the rights?

Part 2 is actually on DVD by... Buena Vista?

Re: 'THE STEPFATHER' - Who owns the rights?

The original THE STEPFATHER was produced by ITC, so it should be part of Granada's library (Granada bought out Carlton which bought ITC from MGM blah blah blah). But while ITC had a hand in the subsequent sequels, the respective studios that made them (Miramax on II, Trimark on III) control them for video in the U.S., hence the Buena Vista DVD of II, which features commentary from producer Darin Scott.
I don't know why STEPFATHER has not had even the most barebone DVD release here since most ITC product is spoken for. Maybe this new sequel might put wheels in motion to free it up.

Re: 'THE STEPFATHER' - Who owns the rights?

I was just thinking about this movie. I recorded mine off IFC years ago. It's likely that remake will give us a good version of this on DVD. That's the only good thing about most remakes.

The "who am I here" bit is terrific. I also enjoyed the house showing scene. And when his step daughter is talking to scary Jerry about how much the doctor meant to her. I just want to kill Jerry!!!

Great film. Too bad I have to watch my lame VHS again this year. Ya know, this is one gorgeous looking movie too! It has a suburbish Halloween look. Just awesome! Can't wait for an anamorhpic widescreen.

Re: 'THE STEPFATHER' - Who owns the rights?

Can't wait to see the new film...

I'm sure some terrible film-maker will decide that his/her love of the first film will justify their retooling and "reimagining" of the original. Then we'll soon hear about how they've cast Hilary Duff or someone similar for the role of Stephanie etc etc.

No part of me doubts that we're going to have another WHEN A STRANGER CALLS remake here...

Not to mention I can GUARANTEE you we will see flashbacks to Jerry as a child or at least his past families. So the audience will understand exactly why he is the way he is. Perhaps Leave it to Beaver will be playing on television as his father beats him with a belt. We certainly can't expect the audience to fill in the blanks...

Part of me also wonders if this will actually result in a release of the first film on DVD in region 1 (clutches his 16:9 german copy). Hopefully, then at least something good will come of it.

Used to be I'd suspect you had some inside info. Since today is the anniversary of Father Knows Best appearing on NBC radio (later TV) it'd work too! But they'll never recapture what made this one so damn great.

I'm definately not interested in this remake. Zombie's Halloween is a different story. I'm really intriged by that notion. I wish he'd just done a new kind of slasher homage though. Same for this one. Reinvent the genre instead of copying all the successes of the past.

signed, mr obvious

When they do one in a NTSC country I'm buying! But I really think the remake is going to get the R1 for us. I mean, we're getting Lets Scare Jessica to Death (which I'm estatic about) thanks to it's upcoming (probably lame) remake.

Re: 'THE STEPFATHER' - Who owns the rights?

Bruce Kimmel at HainesHisWay.com told me that it is available in a region 2 edition, a German import, and can be ordered for a very reasonable price at xploitedcinema.com - here's the link:

Looks like it'll cost you about $30. About $10 higher than reasonable in my tightwade world. Plus it's in PAL. And that generally runs faster. I used to get that with my old Amiga computer games. I had a hack but it made the screen blink. I do plan on getting the UK version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1972). I don't know...if it works okay I might go with this one myself. I wonder if it would be possible to convert this PAL into NTSC somehow.

Re: 'THE STEPFATHER' - Who owns the rights?

Some DVD players have a region hack and the ability to convernt PAL to NTSC. I got one specifically for this reason. I've got the limited edition Stepfather Trilogy set (it's the same edition of part 1 that xploitedcinema is offering, along with parts 2 and 3 in 16:9 widescreen) that is pretty good. It's also got the trailer for the first film, and a still gallery. The DVD player also comes in handy for my region 2 copies of Ally McBeal which will likely never see release in the USA anytime soon.
