I'm going to check this out tomorrow

Just because of Joss

Here is a good review from a Boston paper

Gear mentioned in this thread:

I think its a fair assumption that most of the Buffy / Angel community will be giving Firefly its fair shot tomorrow, becuase of the Joss factor.
I've kept all the reviews / spoilers / etc out of my sight so I could make my own opinion, so I'm pretty psyched...

All hail Lord Whedon and the third incarnation of His perfection

Baptisms will be held following the show

Lama Lama Ding Dong!

Can't wait to check it out. If it's as good as his other outings I may have finally found another show to regularly watch.

Is this message going to morph into the official thread? So what's the title going to be? Is Mr. Kleist taking nominations?

FireFlicous anyone?

Though I'm hardly a Joss Whedon looney like my pal Jeff, I gotta admit this show looks pretty damn cool.

So cool that I'll probably love it before they cancel it after 6 weeks.
I'm actually curious about this show because I really know nothing about it except what the brief commercials say. I think its on a bad night though...friday and saturday nights are not good nights to have new tv shows.
I'm going to watch the show, but the WAF is really low thus far. (probably because of the cosmic hooker and nekid girl in a box)
Gee, didn't a little show called the X-Files start out on Friday nights?
Eric, actaully that's been something I've been debating

Should the thread be "The (Hopefully) Eternal (SECRET ADJECTIVE) Thread"

Or shoud I hope that Fox isn't going to cancel it?
Frankly, I have no faith that Fox won't kill it, as they have done EVERY SINGLE hardcore sci-fi show they've ever had
post #11 of 104
I think unless this one is great in the opening weekend, it'll be canned, but I'll be watching. Sadly, I'm working this Friday, and I'll miss it, but I'm throwing a tape in. Can't wait.

Also, FOX was originally going to air this 4:3 (despite being frame for the 16:9 aspect ratio), however all the tv spots I've seen are in widescreen. So that's a good thing.

All the TV spots are in a mixture of widescreen and 4:3. BUT, according to TIVO, Friday's broadcast will be in widescreen.

Oh, and I'll be watching this tomorrow night.
Lord Whedon and crew have been pushing for 16:9. We can only hope they succeeded
post #14 of 104
Jeff,

We could call it "the inevitable excuse me but your Firefly is open thread" until we have confirmation of a second season.

Regards,

The DirectTV online guide has it listed as LB
post #16 of 104
yay I won't miss this one tonight. i don't work until next friday.

I'm actually going into my first job (16 years old) and am planning to save up for college, and an XBOX (for what game you ask? I'll give you two choices, and one hint! Buffy - Not Buffy, and here's the hint, it's not "not Buffy")

Hopefully, FIREFLY won't bomb, because it really does look like a good show, and I'm looking forward to seeing it. Here's hoping for the DVD release in the next few years...

Well I was entertained by this episode. It was a little slow at the beginning but it picked up at the end. Loved the part at the end with the henchman. I'd love to have seen the original pilot first, though. I'll definitly be watching next week.
I was impressed, it was fun & well written and showed some imagination. I'm looking forward to next week and hopefully it can keep the momentum going for the rest of the season.
I felt is suffered a bit from "written in a weekend" syndrome, but that only lowered it to great . In the beginning I was feeling some disturbing Cowboy Bebop parallels, but it dissipated the farther we got into it. A lot of setup for the future in classic Jossian fashion. Let's see where the regular crew takes it

I'm sure Jason Seaver will be in here to naysay soon
post #20 of 104
I thought it was great! The only problem I had was the episode seemed to reference things that took place in the 2 part pilot and I wish Fox had aired it first. I wanted to see how the crew ended up together. Now let's just hope it can survive the ratings gauntlet. If you know someone with a ratings box make them watch! Hold them at gun point if you have to!
I thought it was pretty good. I didn't like the teaser too much, and I didn't like the opening credits, but the episode got more enjoyable as it went along so I'm happy Of course, the true test will come when we get to episodes that aren't written/directed by Joss.

I'll have to learn the cast members' names. Favorites so far are the Full Metal Jacket guy and the whore. The priest seems likable but his hairstyle weirds me out
post #22 of 104
How was it! I missed it, and am I pissed. I got to watching my 24 dvds, and totally forgot. Anyone know if I can find this on IRC or somewhere online, or if FOX is planning to show this one again? I really hope so, I can't believe this!

How were the opening credits? Music?
I liked it and will come back next week. It definately needs an intro and music change. It was all a bit low key.

Hope this isn't your idea of "hardcore sci-fi". This is "sci-fi" for those who hate science fiction (and/or don't know what it is).

If Mr. Whedon and Fox want to do Westerns, why not just do them straight?

HOOOOO-HUM!

I really enjoyed this show tonight. I knew absolutely nothing about it until I saw a dual ad for it and John Doe on Yahoo this morning at work. The miniature spaceship zooming across the screen caught my eye, so I did a little research and decided it would be worth tuning in. I'm glad I did and will be doing the same next week.

Hmmm...I wonder how wise it is to admit that I am a victim of interent advertising?
I agree, this is no more hardcore sci-fi than "Buffy" is straight horror.

That doesn't make it a bad show, however.

I was all set to dislike it (a Western in space? Now there's an original idea. ), but like many of the rest of you, I became more intrigued as the episode played out. The main reason - the characters & performances worked for me. With a solid set of interesting & likeable characters, I am more than willing to sit back & enjoy the show while Whedon works out the kinks. Kind of like the 1st season of "Buffy"!!

I love the attitude encapsulated in the scene at the end Travis mentioned, where
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
it looked like Whedon was setting up a "big bad" to chase our heroes all season, only to pull the rug out from under us and have the baddie unceremoniously shoved into the engine! Great stuff!

What I didn't like has been adequately covered above - slow start, music, unimaginative plot - but this is a promising start, and I'll be back for sure. "Firefly" is now a Season Pass on my TiVo, and that should say it all!

Great show! My wife and I, Joss disciples both, were tense at the beginning...no teens, no rock numbers...no vampires. Would it be good? It was a hoot! Unlike Jeff, I felt more of a Trigun vibe with the wandering hero, but you are right, the Bebop feel was there as well. Good stuff. I am sure naysayers will still find there way here but that's okay. I just hope there is enough of a following to keep it. Finally an SF (okay, space opera for the SF snobs) show where aliens aren't a part of the mix but zippy writing and fun characters are. It made the new Enterpise show look like it is standing still (which, oddly enough, it is...).

Speaking of anime, I always thought Joss wrote, if not anime style, with the cohesion of an typical anime season. Beginning, middle, end with a great arc between. I wish more shows would do that.

And for those who didn't get all the answers in the first episode...that is why it is a series and not a 2 hour movie...we watch to slowly learn the stuff. Can't wait for the REAL pilot.

Hope it lasts!

I concur with most everything that's been said. If I hadn't been in the know, I probably wouldn't have stayed past the teaser, but it did get quite entertaining. I do wish we'd seen the real pilot, if only because I think it's awfully early to be delving into the serialized conspiracy aspect.

The henchman joke at the end was definitely signed by Joss Whedon. I found the doped up Jayne to be funnier, though.

Let's hope Fox keeps up the letterboxing!

Why do it straight? I mean, Peter David did it with Oblivion. I like normal straight up science fiction. But I'll take an interesting space western over another bland and derivative Star Trek like Enterprise any day of the week.

Personally I thought the Western Style intro and bluegrass style music fit the show like a glove. And this coming from a guy who hates country music for the most part.

I don't watch Buffy or Angel, but I'll definitely be tuning in next week.

Wow... I thought this was really, really great. That probably means it won't last long, with my luck!

Nice likeable mix of characters, good acting, high production values, great writing. I also felt a similarity to Cowboy Bebop but that's no bad thing.

Next week's episode looks a bit Alien-ish, I hope it's not as straightforward as it looked from the trailer. But that aside I have very high hopes for the rest of it.

Fox, please don't kill it. Please.
