Hey the reply box opened up, 2nd try, woohoo!

Hello Russ haven't seen you since the Oscars dude. Been busy eh? Not really interested in The Crazies, I get enough of that here, ooh. But I do want to see Greengrass's Green Zone, not in the cinema though. Shakycam movies work better on tv, on the big screen it's nauseacam.

Parker, to be frank if we weren't friends I wouldn't have lasted all these years on the forum, no way. And thanks to your support we few, we happy few, we band of brothers (and sister), have this little corner of the forum to mess around in and I'll always be grateful to you for that.

Like you said there isn't that much to discuss these days, apart from posting the odd review or youtube video, check out this naughty advert for Wii -

Walter, my most recent Blu-ray was Casino Royale, watched it at the weekend, excellent quality. I was looking forward to the picture-in-picture 'extra' and it turned out to be the director and producer chatting all through the film! Holy fleurking schnitt who wants to see them chatting when I can be looking at the movie instead?  I thought there would be behind the scenes footage etc oh well there was plenty of extras on the 2nd disc.

I love this little corner we have here -- I'm glad Steve invited me to take a look way back when.  :)

My life just doesn't leave as much time for movie viewing these days.  I can remember about 4 years ago when I saw 104 films (my record) at the theater in one year.  Now, I'm lucky if I see about 50 (although perhaps I'm being more selective as well!)  I haven't viewed a DVD/BD for weeks, as it's difficult enough keeping up with my weekly TV shows.  Between my job and care-related time for 2 elderly parents, I'm pushing myself more than I have in years.  It is REALLY hard.

Couldn't find the motivation to go out to see "The White Ribbon" again this weekend.  I will likely end up seeing it on BD.  Haneke is such a hit/miss with me.  I do, however, think I might go to "Repo Men" this weekend.  "From Paris with Love" left town before I could get to it.

I have gotten into the routine of reading, especially before bed to distract my mind.  I'm now reading "13 Bullets", which is a vampire novel.  I somehow find myself drawn to the vampire/zombie genre at the moment!

Oh, and of course, I'll watch whatever "March Madness" I can!

I saw the trailer to Repo Men, looks quite interesting. And it's not a sequel to Alex Cox cult 80's film, Repo Man.

I'm currently reading a book on Dutch director Paul Verhoeven, full of info on all his films and packed with rare photos some of which feature nudity (well it is Verhoeven). Photos include Rutger Hauer and his penis from Turkish Delight, and shots of Sharon Stone uncrossing her legs from Basic Instinct.

Turkish Delight.jpg

Do you still have faith in cinema?

Verhoeven "Sure, yeah yeah yeah yeah. But I have to continuously run old movies to keep my faith. When I feel very depressed I look at Ivan the Terrible or The Rules of the Game or Metropolis or even Blade Runner, say, or The Terminator or something like that, or every Hitchcock movie – or maybe 50% per cent of them. I need them – sometimes I come home completely depressed and I have to put them on. It’s so difficult in an industry where the parameters have become so much those of pure entertainment, to still keep your belief that cinema is an art."

Politics

Verhoeven "Take STARSHIP TROOPERS, great example, probably the most political statement I've ever made. Five years ago, most of the critics totally trashed that movie. They called me a nazi, saying I was idolizing Leni Riefenstahl. Now, that image has totally changed. A lot of people see now that the film is about the United States. The whole situation in Afghanistan is almost an exact copy of STARSHIP TROOPERS; the whole gung ho-mentality of bombing everything, blasting the Taliban-forces out of the caves. I put all that in STARSHIP TROOPERS! The corrupted atmosphere of propaganda, once invented by Goebbels, has now taken over the United States as well. It's extremely interesting to see how the media can besiege an entire nation with propaganda."

I watched Evangelion 1.11 on Blu-ray last night. Wow, what a great movie. First of 4, in all. The first one is a redo of episodes 1 to 6, more or less. One of the most beautiful animated films i have on Blu, and i have plenty.

If you like the show, i recommend highly. If you have never seen it, its a rental, then i bet a purchase!

I think the next chapter comes to Japan in May, and then the States in a year or so...DAC can correct me if i am wrong.

Great interview clips there Steve.  Verhoevan became a bit of a joke, but I always liked his movies.  Well, mostly anyways.  I remember loving STARSHIP TROOPERS when it came out, and I still do.  I never did see Black Books or whatever that last one was.

I haven't seen Evagelion 1.22..3.4.4.4 either.  Is it a remake of an old anime?  Neogenis Evanfgelion?  About some kid in love with a mech robot floating around in space?  I might of asked this before and forgot all about the answer... :P

Yep, its a reworking of the 90s series Neon Genesis Evangelion. I didn't love the show, the hero was to whiny. But the movie tones that down, as much as possible.

Justified starts to tonight. Should be a good time.

Justified isn't being broadcast here in Britain yet, but I won't let a little thing like that stop me from watching it of course.

Russ, I saw that Evangelion movie after Rick mentioned here in Testy. It's a big screen remake of the first 6 episodes of the series Neon Genesis Evangelion, with improved animation and some CG added. It was a big hit in Japanese cinemas in 2007. I wasn't that impressed with it but than I wasn't really a fan of Neon Genesis which for a while was the most popular anime on the planet. I thought it was too repetitious, Cowboy Bebop was more enjoyable.

I've got The Pacific episode one to watch tonight in HD, hope it lives up to it's hype.

Steve:

Since I don't get HBO let me know how you like it.

Yeah Steve, let us know how it is.  I got a copy of it but don't know when I'll get to it! :P

BAND OF BROTHERS was really good, so I have high hopes for THE PACIFIC.  There's some truly horrific stories to be told about the pacific campaign, I wonder if they'll have the salt to show it??

I think I'll watch my copies of COWBOW BEBOP and SAMURAI CHAMPLOO before I dive into mech anime like Evanglinienie.  :)

First episode was okay, we're just getting to know the soldiers, their mission etc. It does look big and expensive, with plenty of gore, the Japs are "yellow monkeys" according to one soldier. It should get better as it goes along but there is a feeling of deja vu for anyone who's seen Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima recently, episode 8 is called Iwo Jima so we'll probably see the famous flag raising scene again. The first episode was on Guadalcanal.

I might rewatch Samurai Bebop and Cowboy Champloo Russ. They were good fun. I also have Samurai 7, Samurai X and Samurai XXX here to watch, yeah why not....
The PAcific sounds HILARIOUS!  Can't wait!

I have Samurai Be7 to watch too.  I actually take a Samurai B7 every morning, keeps my katana sharp!  I loaded a bunch of anime rips on to my newly purchased 1TB drive and bought a docking thing to run it directly into my PS3, and found most the formats aren't recognized!  I don't get it, I can stream them using a media server software on my laptop and play them on my PS3, but plugged directly into the PS3, and they don't work.  It's a big HARUMPH! for me.  :(

They might be MKVs Russ, not many programs can play that file format. I can play MKVs on the VLC media player which can pretty much play anything, even corrupt files.

I convert MKVs into Blu-ray folders, burn them to disc and play them on my blu-ray player, it's a doddle I tells ya.
That's the thing, the MKVs play fine when streamed from my laptop hard drive on to the PS3 through the network (you use the PS3 menus to chose them off the laptop drive).  Once I copy them onto a hard drive and plug it straight into the PS3, it don't recognize them  Why does technology have to be such a bugger eh???  :P

Hmmm you can always buy one of those 'media center' thingys Russ, I think it connects to a usb port on your computer and than to the back of your tv. Does it have its own hard drive? I don't know. Never tried one but I've seen them for sale in all sorts of shapes and sizes. But can it play MKV files? [shrugs]

I'm thinking of getting a nice new laptop in the summer with an hdmi output, connect it to my tv and watch films via the laptop or just browse the internet on a 42inch screen [bites fist]... Testy Area 51 on a 'big screen' [gasps].

I don't need one Steve, my laptop does it with the PS3 ha ha. :P

You getting one of these?

He has one! Remember Russ, we did pages on the bathroom computer, a few years ago.

I think he looks at Sean Connery pics from Zardoz in the loo too!

Stop it you silly boys! Russ if your laptop 'does it' with your PS3 than why can't you play MKV files? Oh I give up.

My 100th Blu-ray arrived this morning, Toy Story! woo and hoo. I suppose I should order Toy Story 2 too. And than there's Dumbo. I was hoping for Fantasia on Blu this easter, what a shame. Maybe later this year? It's 70 years old! Dumbo is 69.

Jedi wins apology after being kicked out of Jobcentre for wearing a hood

When benefits claimant Chris Jarvis was asked to put down his hood in a Jobcentre, he said he was entitled to wear it because of his Jedi 'faith'. When he continued to wear the cowl despite repeated warnings, he was escorted from the premises by security guards.

Yet in a case which sums up the march of political correctness in the public sector, he has now received a grovelling apology saying that the government agency 'embraces diversity and respects a customer's religion'. 'Jediism' was made up for the Star Wars films.

I am a Star Wars follower. It means following the way of the Jedi,' Chris said yesterday. 'Someone with their own religious views is allowed to wear what their religion says - the Sikhs are able to carry a great big dagger. My religion allows me to wear my hood'

'I was told by security staff to remove my hood. I was told, not asked. I said, "It's my religion, I'm a Jedi Knight",' said Mr Jarvis, 31. The ex-builder, who lives in Southend with his girlfriend, who is also unemployed, said a floor manager then asked him to remove the hood.

A spokesman for the Campaign Against Political Correctness said: 'This is the problem with the equality and diversity agenda. I'm sure when the legislation was being drawn up people didn't have in mind a Jedi who would sue because they couldn't wear their hood.'

In the 2001 census, 390,000 people listed their religion as Jedi, making it the fourth biggest 'belief' in the country.

The two parts of that story I find extremely hard to believe:

And, #2

I hope not as a storm trooper.  That probably wouldn't make for a good relationship with a Jedi.

Storm Troopers would make the best girl friends for a Jedi, you can use the mind trick to get them to make you extra sandwiches!  :D
