Testy Area 51 - Page 821

ha ha, I might need a coffee break, and it's barely 9pm here!  Hurt Locker jsut got something, Editing?  It's all a blur, 3.5 hours in right?  not including 2 hours of red carpet.

Hurt Locker has won the most awards so far, Avatar got two or three? I've lost count. It's 4.15am here and typing on the computer is helping to keep me awake.

My nephew is messing about with his iphone. He wants Inglourious Basterds to win Best Picture.
I could go with Basterds, but I have a feeling you're right and Hurt Locker is going to get it.

The foreign language category needs a hug.  Jeez, what a somber batch of movies!  No wonder the world loves Hollywood!

James Cameron always looks pissed off.  What's up with that?

He probably knows his ex-wife will be up on stage soon Russ.

Ben Stiller made one scary looking N'avi didn't he?
ha ha, he sure did!  that was great.

Julianna Moore is on stage, wowzers is she looking good!

This whole thing with bringing people out to talk and gush about the nominees is so cringeworthy, I hate it. The show is long enough as it is.
It's a bit much eh?  i thought they would of done away with it.  They sould just get Julianna Moore and Milla Jovavitch to jello wrestle the noms... :P

aaargh get on with the awards already, I hate all this "you're such a special person" shit, it's embarrassing. I'll never make fun of the Bafta awards again.

My nephew is reading a magazine and probably won't be staying up so late to watch the Oscars ever again.

Bullock won! It's all so predictable, so far.
I can't believe Bullock won for that crap film.  She was crap in it too.  Putting on a bad accent and acting like a stuck up cu....  well...   the girl from An Education was much better.
I'm actually surprised by the best director to.  :O

Hurt Locker all the way! Again no real surprises. Elizabeth must be cheering.

Well at least it's a film I liked that won.

I thought the show was a bit of a shambles this year, not particularly memorable. The horror montage was the best bit.

My nephew is up and getting ready to leave. He was only happy with Christoph Waltz winning.
Ha ha, your nephew has good taste :P

I thought the show was ok, but that's just because I thought Martin and Baldwin made a good team. They should let them host everything.  Maybe it was the over all blah movie year?  Most of the movies these days are pretty predictable, is it any wonder the awards are too?

Despite not being blown away by AVATAR, I still think Cameron should of got an Oscar for it.  the technical achievement out weighs it's flaws.  And it made cartoons cool for adults. :P

I'm off to bed.  It's 10pm.  What;s it there Steve?  4am ha ha.  It's always a pleasure my friend!

A shame Avatar lost to a film only a handful of people have seen but thats the way it goes. Cameron won the biggest prize of all, most popular film.

I'm off to bed too, my nephew has already raced off home, it's 5.15am here. I'm glad you stuck around Russ, cheers mate.

OK, it just finished here on delay.  (I DO NOT check the internet to see who won as it would spoil it.)

Just because Avatar was seen by gazillion more people than The Hurt Locker does not mean it's a better film.    In fact, the more I see clips from Avatar, it's refreshing my underwhelming reaction to it (now bordering on dislike) more and more.  That is the biggest grosser of all time?!?!?!?!  (Not taking inflation into account or Gone With the Wind would still kick its ass.)  I was thrilled for The Hurt Locker and was indeed applauding.  I was surprised by how overwhelmed Kathryn Bigelow looked, considering all the momentum has been going her way these last few weeks.  I would have been sick if Cameron won.  In fact, I can say I was quite happy with all the winners, except I would have liked to have seen Up in the Air get the Adapted Screenplay award.

I had totally overlooked The Secret in Their Eyes for Best Foreign Language Film, considering it a race between The White Ribbon and Un Prophet.  Ricardo Darin seems to be in every film from Argentina.  I hope I get a chance to see Secret, and I'm pretty hopeful Un Prophet is coming to town as the posters were up.

And yes, Colin Farrell sings in Crazy Heart.  While he at first seems to be odd casting, he created a nice character.  I liked that his character was allowed to be a good soul, rather than the cliched way they could have gone.

Wow, I just saw Alice in Wonderland made like $116 million this weekend.  I was only off in my prediction by about $80 million!  (I play a Box Office prediction game at another site.)  Brooklyn's Finest made a so-so $13.5 million.  This will probably be one of those that finds its audience on DVD/Blu-Ray.  I know Richard Gere has played cops before, but he just absolutely FITS that police uniform.  And Ethan Hawke just gets better and better.  Pete Hammond's review says "In a brief supporting role Meg Ryan is also fine along with Brian F. O’Byrne and Will Patton."  Man, that's Ellen Barkin, not Meg Ryan!  And I understand the film played at festivals with a completely different ending - I hope they include that on the Blu-Ray.  I know what it is, but I always find alternate endings the most interesting extra.

Rick this forum is so buggy it's a miracle anything works at all, a miracle I tells ya!  I tried to use the quote function and it wouldn't let me and to top it all the reply box was MIA, so I had to refresh to get it back again. I had to use highlight/copy and paste to grab a quote from Elizabeth's post, at least that works (for now).

I dunno Elizabeth, can a billion people be wrong? Just joshing, you know I have a weakness for sci-fi and I should be glad a couple of sci-fi movies got nominated for best picture this year, something that will never ever happen again.

I sniggered at this readers comment from the Daily Mail newspaper -

Quote:
How the hell didnt Avatar win the best picture? James Cameron don't take this lying down, you have been duped. I mean those blue aliens inspired me and gave me a skip in me step, they are the reason to live. The film was massive, but they give all the awards it to a film about scrawny boys hunting bombs in a screwed up country called Iraq? Avatar should have won all the Oscars.

Whats going to win the Oscar next year, a film about giving people food in Haiti?

Haha so true, thats exactly whats going to happen next year. The Oscars are so predictable!

I just got an e-mail that I won 5 tickets to the Spring Hawaii International Film Festival!  They gave 5 winners a bundle of 5 tickets each for picking these categories correctly:

Oscar Winners for the 8 categories highlighted in our Quick Picks Contest:

  • Best Picture: THE HURT LOCKER - Kathryn Bigelow
  • Leading Actor: Jeff Bridges - CRAZY HEART
  • Leading Actress: Sandra Bullock - THE BLIND SIDE
  • Directing: Kathryn Bigelow - THE HURT LOCKER
  • Documentary (Feature) - THE COVE - Louie Psihoyos and Fisher Stevens
  • Foreign Language Film: THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES - Argentina
  • Short Film (Animated): LOGORAMA - Nicolas Schmerkin
  • Short Film (Live Action): THE NEW TENANTS - Joachim Back and Tivi Magnusson

I guess 4 people or less got a perfect 8 because I know I got Foreign Language film wrong.

The lineup for the Spring Fest doesn't seem to be finalized yet, but Ajami and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo are confirmed.  I recently purchased the latter novel but have not read it yet.

That's great Elizabeth, free tickets to see new films, nice. Just think, if you were a huge Avatar fan you wouldn't have won that competition.

Last new film I saw was Ninja Assassin on blu-ray last night. A blood thirsty action-fest starring Korean singing superstar Rain as a super-ninja. The fights are well staged, the ninja weapons are cool, with bodies gushing fountains of blood it's hilarious. I enjoyed the film a lot and recommend it to all the action fans out there. The film was produced by the Wachowski siblings Andy and Lana (formerly Larry) and it was directed by James McTeigue who previously directed V for Vendetta.

At the Oscars. James Cameron looking like he's about to strangle his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow after her film won an award.

Nice pics of Cameron/Bigelow!

Can you believe Kathryn is 58?!?!?!  Great looking (and tall) lady.

I remember seeing a picture of Kathryn Bigelow in a movie magazine when Point Break was coming out nearly 20 years ago (wow!) she was so pretty I thought she was starring in the film!

I never realized all the films that she directed before. Hopefully she will be getting the "A Kathryn Bigelow Film" credits now in ads for her new films, etc. Or the "From Academy Award Winning Film Director Kathryn Bigelow" type of thing.

She definitely doesn't look 58. More like 38.

Both great features to be had in a lady. She is a real class act too.

Hopefully Bigelow's awards will speed up the release of Strange Days on Blu-ray.  Hopefully.

[sneaks into thread] Hello? Anybody? I have to admit the urge to post on the forum has greatly lessened lately, I don't know what it is. Boredom? A buggy forum? 10 years of posting taking it's toll? Old age? Laziness? Or just plain can't think of anything interesting to post. All of the above.

I have a feeling this is my last year on the forum and it's no one's fault, nothing lasts forever. My playtime here has naturally run it's course.

I saw two new films recently, Brothers and Brooklyn's Finest. Both good, both well acted and both worth seeing.

Brothers 2009.jpg

Brothers stars Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman. Maguire plays a Marine taken prisoner and tortured by the Taliban in Afghanistan, he is rescued and returns home to his wife (Portman) but he starts to crack up when he suspects his brother (Gyllenhaal) was spending too much time with his wife while he was MIA. A powerful performance from Tobey Maguire as he goes completely schizo near the climax. Recommended. 3 out of 5.

Brooklyn's Finest.jpg

Brooklyn's Finest is the tale of three very different New York cops, played by Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke and Don Cheadle, each has their own seperate storyline but their fate is ultimately intertwined. Washed out cop, Gere, is a week before retirement. Hawke, looking even more emaciated than usual, has a large family with more children on the way but not enough money to support them, so he resorts to stealing from drugdealers. Cheadle has been given a task to take down druglord Caz (Wesley Snipes, in a welcome return to the big screen), who also happens to be a friend of his. It all ends in tears of course. Recommended. 3.5 out of 5.

I agree Steve, its dead around here. Maybe 10 years has had its toll? I dunno. I dont think its the new forum, but then again, i see lots of posts on other forums. I even see guys who posted here on them.
I never feel the urge to post much, then again, i do not post on any other forum either.

Glad you liked it, too.  If you look on imdb forums, you'll see that the original ending was even bleaker.

I had a peek at IMDB Elizabeth, 10 pages of threads on this one film, too many to wade through. I assume no one survived in the original ending? I like that Cheadle's name is Tango and Snipes is Caz. Tango & Caz.

For me it really has become more of an issue that there really isn't that much to discuss as their used to be. The whole industry seems to be in a kind of flat plane. Nothing is that exciting. I believe this is more of a sign of the times than anything else. People are taking account of what they are doing with their spare time.

I hope that everyone is still around here next year because for me this is a place that we all share that is unique to the rest of the internet. Sure we can all go to other sites but there is nothing like our group that we have here and I would hate to see anything happen to it. I know that all good things must come to an end but for me I hope it never does with us. I am grateful to Steve for ranting "What the hell.." that has taken on a life of its own. Testy Area 51 is a place to answer that question and more. The best part of this area is that it is here. Nothing comes close.

Thats true Parker, no format war, all the good stuff is on disc, and some people got a life!

In the old days it would take me an hour to read everything i wanted to on here, now i can skip a day or two, and still have everything read ( on this site, not this thread, in 15 minutes),

I dont Blog, but thats really what this thread is, you guys are like friends.

I haven't been posting near as much manly because I usually come around here at work and my works become a total shit show and I have no time!  Bastards!  I'm not as enthusiastic with the hobby as I once was either.  And I find myself annoyed most of the time.  I thought doing the "Track The Films You Watch" thread would keep my interest but I find most of the reviews in there super annoying and it's killed it for me ha ha.

I love this place though, and even when I don't post, it's great to see you all checking in!  The weathers gotten nice around here, so as a result I've gone out to the movies every night this weekend!  How does that work??

THE CRAZIES (2010) 2/5 : Some ok effects and a car wash don't elevate this messy remake from being boring.  So I guess that makes it faithful to the original messy movie...

GREEN ZONE (2010) 3.5/5 - The plot has holes, the trailer tells the movie and the camera is so shaky it's mostly out of focus.  I still liked it though, moves at a good pace and doesn't overstay it's welcome.

THE WHITE STRIPES: UNDER GREAT WHITE NORTHERN LIGHTS (2010) 3.5/5 - A documentary on their concert tour where they played every province and territory in Canada.  A few too many shots of the pair walking around in slow motion in B&W for my liking, but on the whole, it's a fun doc with some great concert footage.  I doubt it'll make you a fan though if you're not one already.

I kind of got talked out a number of years ago.  The introduction of HD-DVD got my interest back in HT and the format war increased my postings.  Went dual format the following year when Casino Royale hit Bd.  ( I wonder how many Bd players that title sold? )

Definitely slowed down again with my posts, but I hope all of the droogs keep posting in Testy 51.

Watched Videodrome for the first time in a number of years last night.  I'd forgotten just how creepy that film plays out.  "Come to Nicki"  "It bites."
