Testy Area 51 - Page 820

I'm scrambling to watch Oscar noms before the big night, and man, maybe they shouldn't have let them have 10 best picture noms or whatever.

Precious - Hilarious for all the wrong reasons.

The Blind Side - I'm going to strike the director blind if I ever meet him for making this piece of shit.

An Education - the classy "Precious" in that the 16 year old wanted to get fucked?  Seriously??

I still have Up In The Air, Hurt Locker and A Serious Man to watch.

I have however seen two real good ones.  THE WOLFMAN might be the greatest wolfman movie ever made ever!  I nerdgasmed 3 times during this one, it's that good!  Holy shit!  SHUTTER ISLAND is a fantastic piece of work as well.  A ridiculously dark homage to film noir, it all worked great.  DeCaprio has never been better, and I'm getting a man crush for Mark Ruffalo in the movies. :P

The closest thing to a man crush I had was with the king of kung fu, Bruce Lee. When I was young I was a huge fan and I would collect anything with Lee's picture on it. I'd travel miles to see reruns of Lee's movies on the big screen. I tore down my 'Caroline Munro in a skimpy bikini' poster and put up a half naked picture of Bruce Lee in it's place, hmmm that's a man crush alright... borderline gay come to think of it, nooooo! [bites fist].

Curse of the Dragon. Bruce with Linda and Brandon.

I want to see Shutter Island and The Wolfman, Russ, but I'm a lazy bugger, gone are the days when I would see anything and I do mean anything at the cinema. I remember back in 1983 seeing Blue Thunder at a Leicester Square cinema and when it finished I raced across the street to another cinema and saw Wargames, both films by the same director John Badham. I remember seeing Supergirl at a west end cinema with a friend in 1984 and when it finished we were hiding our faces as we walked out we were so embarrassed by it. Now I've got Supergirl on my shelf next to my dvds of Battlefield Earth and Catwoman.

The first time I saw Bruce Lee was as Kato in The Green Hornet. Lee did more to bring the martial arts to the American audience than any other.
How COULD you tear down a Carolyn Monroe poster and put Bruce Lee in its place?
Your parents must of wondered.
I loved Blue Thunder..the series sucked, but we got Airwolf because of it. I love Airwolf too.
HATED Supergirl. Geez, what a bad movie, all the way around.

Parker, totally agree, Lee was/is a martial arts icon, a legend.

Rick, it could have been worse, it could have been a poster of Liberace at his piano, grinning. Than my parents would have been really worried.

Btw The Beatles were my favourites back then, and the King of course, Elvis.

I'm currently watching a compilation of new and newish movie trailers in 720p HD, I created a Blu-ray compatible disc with 40 hi-def trailers, and thumbnailed menus included. And boy do they look and sound great, pin-sharp clarity and ear-splitting audio quality. Titles range from Alice in Wonderland to Tron Legacy. A fab 3m 30s 200mb trailer of Avatar looks stupendous on my 42inch TV. Looking forward to seeing the other 158mins when it's out on Blu in the summer.

If anyone's interested it took 3 hours to create that disc using MultiAVCHD 3.0 and a folder with over 3000 trailers to choose from.

Nice to see a Star Trek poster next to your tv screen Rick. Looks good. My home theater looks too ordinary to show off here, but I do have an entire wall covered in dvds which is pretty impressive, close to 2500 dvds. The last SD-DVD I bought was Spielberg's 1941 in february, could it be the last DVD I'll ever purchase? [sniff]

Parker, that's a clever short movie, the only thing spoiling it is the product placement in some scenes.

No internet for 24 hours, maintenance work in our area, you don't miss the internet until it's actually gone. Even Sky tv went off the air for an hour, which caused a bit of a panic because the Oscars are on tomorrow night and I want to watch it live. It's only on once a year dudes.

I saw The Ghost Writer yesterday.  I liked the casting, including Kim Cattrall and Olivia Williams in the female roles.  The suspense stays at a low simmer and never quite completely ratchets up.  This is the most un-American looking America, being that Polanski obviously couldn't shoot there.  Everything looked so European that in the beginning I was thinking -- wait, he did go to America, right?  The final scene was nicely done.

I saw Brooklyn's Finest today.  Wow, I really liked this movie.  Couldn't ask for much more in terms of casting than Gere, Hawke and Cheadle.  I love these types of parallel story structures, and seeing how eventually, their paths will cross.  I'm sure Wesley Snipes is happy to be in a mainstream film with this company after all those DTV films.  The last act was a bit confusing in the way it was edited together.

Rick:

Nice setup. I noticed your tri-corder and the phaser in the corner of your DVD rack. I am not that far away from you either.

Elizabeth:

I want to see both of those films. Really looking forward to Justified starting on the 16th.

I'm sure how much of the Oscar's I will get in this year. It will definitely be a different one with two hosts and all the noms.

I think Timothy Olyphant's marshal is going to be a very compelling character.  There's always something a bit mysterious about him, and he has an Eastwood-ish delivery.  I can't recall a movie in which Olyphant screamed or got really excited.

I watched the final episode of "Nip/Tuck" tonight.  I'm so sad to see the series end, as it was still one of my favorites.  It did not end the way I would have liked.

There were several action movie trailers with "Brooklyn's Finest" today -- one was the Jolie film "Salt".  The other, "The Losers", was something I hadn't heard about, but it looked like a good popcorn flick.  I guess it's based on a comic.

Oh yes, Oscar time...i forgot about them.

Your Dedicated Steve, to stay up until, what 3 or 4 AM if you stay til the end, your time?

You and Russ gonna Blog here as it goes down? I have not seen Russ in a few.

Speaking of Oscars, i saw that Mega Shark and Giant Octopus is getting a Blu-ray release! Jeez, so many movies id like to have in HD, and that isnt one of them. But it was still a laugh...

And so was 2012. I watched that last night. Much better than The Day After Tomorrow, as far as the end of the world. But still had me rolling my eyes, and laughing. I enjoyed it, but i do not need to own it, or Giant Shark!

My wife just smiles at my Trek stuff, a boy with his literal toys. Wish i could afford the Master Replica stuff, but $600 for a Tricorder from them was a bit steep. Even if it looks real. And my wife would freak out!

You're lucky your wife lets you pin up that Star Trek poster next to your tv Rick, no way I can get away with that here, my Sandra wouldn't have it. She won't even let me put up a huge poster of Bruce Lee next to our bed. [bites fist]

It's ironic that I a Brit, should be more excited about the Oscars than you yanks. I've been staying up late to watch it ever since it started going out live here about 20 years ago. Before that we used to get a 90min edited show the day after. The live feed usually starts about 1.30am here. Sandra is blissfully asleep by then, so I have to be careful and not yell out if Avatar wins anything important, or scream in horror if Preciousss wins Best Picture.

The last time I talked to Russell he asked me if I was up for some Oscar commentary in testy so we might be doing it tonight if he's available.

I watched the trailers to Brooklyn's Finest, Salt and The Losers when I was compiling that trailer disc. I want to see those films. The Losers looks like a lot of fun. Other new trailers I saw were 3 starring Nicolas Cage, Season of the Witch, The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Kick-Ass. The new red band trailer to Kick-Ass is hilarious, if the film's as good as the comic it's going to be a lot of fun. Cage plays a superhero wearing a costume which looks a lot like Batmans.

My little theater room is mine to do as i please. No way would any of my stuff be allowed in the living room.
The living room has a nice set up too. But its smaller, and no subwoofer is allowed there either! The living room isnt about movies or TV (gasp!) We have DirecTV in the living room, and nothing but Blu-ray and rabbit ears for the rare time i watch "TV" in my movie room.
The HD looks really good with the rabbit ear antenna if you guys have never tried it.

Have fun with the Oscars!

Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen, one of the more enjoyable pictures of last year IMO, won the Golden Raspberry as worst film of 2009, boo hiss I say. There were far worse films last year, I know I've seen (and bought them).

Sandra Bullock, favourite to win Best Actress tonight, won Worst Actress at the Razzies. Worst actor were all three Jonas brothers. Eddie Murphy and Paris Hilton were voted worst actors of the decade.

Worst film of the decade went to the utterly butterly bonkers mad Battlefield Earth.

Oscar Oscar!  WOOO!  Yup, I've been stupid busy and a bit absent this past week, but I NEVER miss the Oscars.  So as soon as I'm done gorging on Chinese take out, I'll be on here blabbing about the Oscars  Here and on any live Oscar thread I can find on the HTF ha ha.

Classy set up you have there Rick.  I'll try to sneak a picture of mine.  It's very ghetto in comparison ha ha.  Last SD-DVD I got was this week,  RETURN TO THE 36 CHAMBERS   Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii-YAH!

I watched HURT LOCKER last night.  WOW!  Impressed the hell out of me.  Great job.  The only Oscar noms I didn't fit in was A SIMPLE MAN and UP IN THE AIR.  I'm sure that UP IN THE AIR is pretty good and something I will like, so basically I'm rooting for PRECIOUS, THE BLIND SIDE and AN EDUCATION to lose, I'll be happy with an UP or AVATAR or HURT LOCKER win, and would be cheering loudly if Basterds or District 9 get the bald bugger.

I also saw ALICE IN WONDERLAND.  You know what, it's not bad at all.  It doesn't completely revolve around Johnny Depp which was my big fear, the look was fantastic, the story pretty tight and Crispin Glover!  Why wasn't he advertised for this one???  3/5

No surprises there, Christophe Waltz adds another trophy to his cabinet.

What was up with the Doogie Howser musical opening? Was it necessary? I missed Hugh Jackman.
Ha ha, liked Doogie and Martin and Baldwin did a good job!

Basterds got it's one Oscar for the night, and Up did too it looks like!

Yep, I liked Steve and Alec too.

Russ my nephew is here watching the show with me and I was telling him how sad it was that the great Christopher Plummer has never won an Oscar, and that we might not see him on the show again. He replied "don't worry you'll see him in next years obituary montage" ouch! So nasty.
Ha ha, hopefully that's not a sad but true statement! :P

There's no way in hell DISRTICT 9 is going to win anything.  It's too action sci fi in a non-friendly not AVATAR way.  I'm calling bullshit on the noms.

Colin Farrel sings in Crazy Heart?  I'm liking the looks of this movie more and more.
Thread Starter
Yeah I was surprised to see Colin singing the nominated song, fookin' 'ell.

I liked District 9 and I'm glad it's up there with the usual deadly dull Oscar type films. No love for Watchmen though, basterds!
Yeah!  Watchman was better then half the movies on there!  They're showing the John Hughes tribute, all these movies were better then Precious or An Education. :P

Hurt Locker got best screenplay, Avatar gets best picture.  Who wants to put some money down?  :P

I dunno Russ, it looks like Hurt Locker is this years big one, award-wise. I'm hoping for an upset, District 9 for best picture, oh you never know.

Bueller... Bueller... The John Hughes tribute was touching, the kids have grown old.
Steve Martin just owned the show after Precious got best adapted screen play. :P

Nice horror montage. Avatar won something! So did Star Trek!

When there's more than one winner, there's always one who takes his time talking and the other person doesn't get his chance to say something, I hate that.
Incomplete obit montage?  No Farrah Fawcet (she passed around the time of Michael Jackson didn't she?), but I didn't know Dr. No died.  :(

About time horror got a Oscar tribute.  Hollywoods made more money off the genre then all the besst pictures combined :P
post #24598 of 28319

You're right Russ I didn't see Farrah Fawcett on there and she died the same day? as Michael Jackson. Charles H. Schneer wasn't included in the Oscar obituary but he was in the Bafta montage, other producers were, why leave him out?

Will Avatar win best visual effects? [bites nails]
More importantly, will Sky cut the feed before you find out???   :O

Interpretive dance makes my head hurt and heart cry.  How about they just get mimes next year to make it truly as annoying as possible?

Avatar wins visual effects, yay! The whole film was a visual effect!

No problems with the live feed yet Russ.

I had my coffee break during the dance thingy, my nephew is still awake and on his 2nd Red Bull.
