Anyway she spends the rest of the film in a colourful computer enhanced afterlife trying to communicate with her grieving family and give them clues to the killer's whereabouts. The film was well made, well acted and not a bad way to spend two hours. 3 out of 5.

Note that Steve seemed to enjoy the movie about a murderous child molester, which isn't something I claimed with Chicken Hawk documentary.  :P

Pete Jackson seems to have shot his wad with Lord Of The Rings. I liked KING KONG, but it didn't blow me away.  This LOVELY BONES seems to be kind of the same as KONG, a good movie, not a great one.  I hope Jackson goes back to his BAD TASTE/DEAD ALVIE days and gives us a wacked out gore fest.

Nice job to Parker too for posting some Charlie Booker.  I like following his NEWSWIPE series.  :)

[leaps into frame] Russell, there is growing anti-Basterds sentiment in the Oscar nominations thread, I tried to be neutral considering I wasn't that crazy about the film but I don't think it will stem the tide.

Maybe my nasty remarks about the foreign language category will distract them for a while.

And after that last remark it's ironic that I'm currently watching A Chinese Ghost Story on HD, one of my favourite HK films. [evil smirk]

Don't worry Steve.  I just took the heat off you.

I'll probably be tarred and feathered by the time I wake up tomorrow morning.

Nah Steve I wuz just havin fun is all.

You've got to rattle the monkey cage every once in a while, some of those guys in the MOVIES area take themselves way to seriously.  They need to lighten up a bit.  Have some fun with life, you know.

No email notifications at all yesterday, saturday is usually slow on the forum, not that I have that many subscribed threads but it is unusual not to have any notifications in a 24 hour period. I did get a PM though from a member thanking me for wrecking the Oscar nominations thread, well Jim helped a bit and it wasn't intentional. Like Jim said they need to lighten up a bit.

Some stills from upcoming films, click on the picture to see the title.

Yeah, I'm taking at least half-credit for killing that thread Steve.  That thread isn't just dead, it's staked in the heart, decapitated and disemboweled.

After 10 years, my threads killed tally is now up to 275 and a half.  Most were unintentional kills, but kills nonetheless.

Looking forward to Wolfman and Alice.  Peter Jackson and the Lightning Thief looks interesting.  Never heard of the the other 2.  Almost thought the first one was Iron-man 2 but don't remember Tony Stark having a twin brother with a Pug in the comics.

I've noticed this latest fad now of having someone's full name at the beginning of the movie title, shall we blame Hairy Pothead and the Magic Mushrooms for this phenomenomenon? Well actually this thing does go all the way back to the 1930's with films like Charlie Chan at the Opera and Charlie Chan and the Chocolate Factory. I wonder, will they be naming the next Bond picture "James Bond and the Man with the White Pussy?" hmmm I wish they did bring back Blofeld, brighten up the series a bit.

There's a bunch of moving pictures coming to the theaters I want to see.  Wolfman opens this week, Shutter Island opens at some point, the other DeCaprio one, Iron Man 2 The Quickening, ummm... some other one I think maybe...

RE: Potter Jackson, I don't think it matters if that screen cap is a spoiler or not, is anyone remotely interested in it?  Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's a decent enough movie to make a gajillion dollars and all, it's just such a blatant Harry Potter cash in  I can't imagine anyone being to excited for it.

When did they make a new Star Wars movie?  That is a kid with a light saber ain't it?

I watched the latest in the greatest film series ever committed to film this weekend.  Yes, I'm talking about UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: REGENERATION.  JCVD and Dolph Lundgren beat the holy fuck out of each other, pretty good stuff.  The rest of the action is pretty good too for a cheap-o direct to blu bulgarian film.  The plot is wonk of course, but we established that plot and story don't matter anymore. :P  3.5/5

I also tried watching THE KUNG FU MASSACRE, but found it intolerable so I skipped the middle and just watched the ludicrous final wham bam.  Not worth the effort.

Kung Fu Massacre? New film Russ? There's that Ninja film with all the cg blood out soon on dvd, it might be fun.

The Kick-Ass red band trailer is out and this could be a sleeper, it features 12 year old Chloe Moretz as the foul-mouthed ass-kicking Hit-Girl. Loved her line in the trailer after the titular hero asks her how he can contact her, she replies "Just contact the mayors office he has a light he shines in the sky, its in the shape of a giant cock." Her parents must be proud.

Long time no post, but this is worth it IMO (Marissa Miller)

Thank you Tom Arnold, you missed the flag but I'm OK with the effort into getting it.

Gary C? Whoa. The last time you posted here I was eagerly awaiting the arrival of Van Helsing in cinemas, ah what a flick.

Btw I'm not getting any email notifications, is this normal? I'm not going to bother resubscribing, it ain't worth it dudes. And for all I know I might get a heap of late emails some time tomorrow, it's happened before, it'll happen again.

Let the record reflect that it was not me who posted those photos of Marissa.

I dunno Mike, you'll always be known as that "Marissa guy", doesn't really matter if you post them or not. Elizabeth is right this minute twisting the head off a Woody doll.

Hmmm was that too obscure? [Mike nods]

Hey minutes after I posted about not getting email notifications they all appeared in my inbox, well by 'all' I mean from about 4 threads. [Mike falls off chair laughing]

Russ, both shots are from the Men in Black movies. The top picture from Men in Black I and the bottom from Men in Black II (the tiny alien colony living in the locker at Grand Central station)

I forgot to add a description on each shot, it would have been useful if the forum software simply copied the original title of the image as default but it doesn't. It would save me typing down a description.

83 films on Blu-ray since starting my journey into hi-definition last november. Last few Blu's bought were, V for Vendetta, The Omen (1976), Bram Stokers Dracula (£5.99!) and Stardust one of my favourite fantasy flicks of recent years, the one with Robert De Niro as a rather unusual sky pirate.

I have 200 Blu-rays now. Been buying them for about 2 years. Funny, most of mine are double dips of DVDs. When you see a title for 10 to 15 dollars, you just have to do it!

200 blu-rays eh not bad Rick. Not sure there are 200 Blu's out there I would happily double dip on but if the price's drop further I'd be tempted. Especially with so many favourites still not out on Blu yet. But £5.99 for Bram Stoker's Dracula is a step in the right direction, and it was a pretty good transfer too.

A lot of high quality HD movies are turning up on HDTV and I've watched quite a few, if only they'd release them on Blu, the bastages! All 6 Star Wars films for instance, looked a lot better than our dvd copies, pin sharp PQ, Warren Beatty's Dick Tracy looked stunning in HD and the extended LOTR trilogy, watched over xmas, brighter and clearer in HD.

I've got Dracula, I remember the controversy on the PQ when it came out.  The thread in the BD section got really nutty  ..........Lot's of hand-wringing, weeping, temper tantrums, hair-pulling, bitch-slapping, people throwing themselves out of windows, dogs and cats living together...........  Pretty insane stuff.

I think I'm in the 200 -  250 range for Blu-ray's give or take.  I quit keeping track after I went over a hundred.

Still have somewhere around 1200 DVD's and another 75-100 custom made DVD-R's (titles I've given up on waiting for a DVD release so I just make my own off satellite recordings and such).  TAKE THAT Warner and your $20 DVD-R Archive's!!

V for Vendetta on Blu = .  You're in for a treat Steve.

Remember, remember...the 5th of November.

I remember the 5th of November quite well Mike, 10 years old, cold and hungry, sitting on the pavement next to a home-made dummy of Guy Fawkes, calling out "penny for the guy?" every time someone walked past. A right little scamp I was, sometimes my little brother would accompany me. But that was something a lot of kids did back then, a different age, safer streets. And than we'd go home and burn our 'Guy' in a bonfire accompanied by plenty of fireworks. Aaah memories... [sniff]

V for Vendetta is one of my favourite films of recent years, I've never read the graphic novel it was based on. With or without hair Natalie Portman is so pretty you can't take your eyes off her.

I seem to remember something like that Jim. I saw the film last weekend, nothing wrong with the picture, it looked great. I had it in Dynamic mode which accentuates all the little details and it was like watching a new film. It's coming to the point where I know a film is worth buying on Blu if it gets a 'not recommended' rating from the forum.

Restored "Metropolis" shown outdoors in snowy Berlin

Quote:
BERLIN (Reuters) – More than 2,000 cult film fans braved snow for an outdoor screening of "Metropolis," Fritz Lang's chilling, monumental vision of mechanized society, in front of Berlin's Brandenburg Gate on Friday.

The 1927 dystopian classic, including 30 minutes from the original feared lost forever, was also shown at a gala performance for 1,800 accompanied by a live orchestra and beamed simultaneously to the outdoor crowd in the heart of Berlin.

"Metropolis," which now runs for more than 2-1/2 hours, forged a template for generations of science fiction cinema and its enduring influence has been cited on films from "Blade Runner" to "Fahrenheit 451" and "Star Wars."

"It's the mother of all science fiction and I could hardly wait to see the 30 minutes they found," said Stefan Kolb, 25, a graphic designer. "It's special to watch this outdoors. But if I could have got a ticket for inside, I'd be there instead."

metropolis5.jpg

"Metropolis" -- depicting a tumultuous class struggle in a vast, urban society -- was the first film to be entered into UNESCO's Memory of the World Register, which aims to preserve cultural achievements of outstanding significance.

First released in 1927, the film set a century later was a commercial flop at first and nearly ruined the studio behind it. Soon after its premiere, the movie was heavily cut to make it more accessible and several new versions emerged.

Efforts to restore the film were made over the years but roughly a quarter of it was feared lost for good. Three reels, found in Argentina in 2008, have been restored and all but six minutes of the original 153-minute version were screened.

Yay! Can't wait for this to appear on Blu-ray, "the Mother of all Science Fiction" indeed.
