It's Xmas again? That's a classic Xmas card Elijah, we should send one off to Jack Briggs next xmas.

Moon was alright but it suffered from a lack of alien fauna in 3-D. That's what happens when you set your movie on the friggin' moon instead of a jungle planet. And that's why Cameron is still king.

I used to do all my snoot-bashing in the Polls Area. Jim had started the directors checklist series a few years ago, and the forum film snobs saw the checklists as an opportunity to show off their snootiness and were soon listing films and directors no one in the world had ever heard of. I'm almost sure they made some of those directors names up. I mean all you have to do is jumble up some letters get rid of most of the vowels, make sure it's unpronouncable et voila a famous Polish filmmaker.

The snobs were giving top marks to gobbledygook films full of long introspective pauses, lashings of meaningful closeups, bouts of uncontrollable weeping and an overuse of manic gesticulating, whilst classic British and American films were given zilch respect. So heads were butted, goatees were set on fire, it wasn't pretty but it was fun.

I haven't seen MOOOOOOON yet.  I got it around somewhere.  I did watch a subtitled film though.  CHE : PART 1.  *Polishes monocle, adjusts top hat*  Damned good I thought.  I knew nothing about CHE going into it, but found this to be great.  Instead of dealing with the personal, it deals with the myth making, and you get an idea of the man through that.  I look forward to PART 2, I just have to find the time to watch it.

Popularity doesn't equal quality Steve. Nuff said on AVATAR.  Until Cameron pays for me to get a robot eye and glasses that work with my current prescription glasses, AVATAR is simply a good film for me. :P

Those were the days weren't they? [wipes tear]  A snarky remark would be made, a personal insult is lobbed back, a gauntlet would be thrown to the ground, fists would be pumped in the air, egos would be bruised, the mods would be called in to break it up.  It's just not the same anymore.  It's a kinder, a gentler HTF a shiny new HTF....Gone are the days of yore...............zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I saw both Che and Che Part 2 revenge of the revolutionary a while ago......I think I liked it.  Short term memory problems I guess.

Watched Pandorum last night.  It seems to be getting a sleeper type reputation via of word of mouth.  It even got a passing grade from my favorite online reviewer Glenn Erickson.  Unfortunately I wasn't that impressed as it was more than a bit sloppy in the editing department.  It does have an interesting sci-fi concept that could've done without the kung-fu monsters.  I still don't understand how the monsters got aboard the ship and how they learned martial arts but I did doze off for a few seconds in the middle of the movie so maybe I missed the explanation.        meh............

Yep. I remember you got into more fights than I did in the Polls area Jim, it was like being back in school again, except we didn't get detention.

um I did like Che & Che Up in Smoke, not sure I want to see Che & Che's Revenge of the Revolutionary. Well I might do one day, is Benicio intelligible in this one? I never understood what he was mumbling about in The Usual Suspects. I do want to see him turn into the Wolfman though.

Latest Avatar news! [Russouli averts his eyes] And we have a new number one! The impossible has happened, Titanic is now no.2, worldwide gross. Of course adjusted for inflation Avatar isn't even in the top 20 but sshhh let Jim Cameron have his moment of glory, again!
Che is super good Steve, Part 1 anyways.  You'll like it.  He speaks in subtitles so you can understand him.  :P

I've never been in an all out fight on here, but after getting jailed for a vigorious conversation, I don't bother chatting in to many threads anymore.  :(

What's the number one film with inflation?  Just curious and not stomping on Camerons toes.  It used to be DW Griffins "Birth Of A Nation".  I'd look it up but I'm already getting stink eyed for being on the forums at work just posting this!

Some people claim Birth of a Nation was seen by 200 million people Russ, which I find hard to believe, I mean who was counting bums on seats 100 years ago? But it was definitely the first big superhit of the silver screen.

Gone With the Wind is North America's number 1 adjusted for inflation, Star Wars no.2 and Sound of Music no.3. It should be about the same worldwide.

Here is Box Office Mojo's adjusted for inflation chart, Avatar is all the way down at 26 and has no hope of catching up with the top 3.

That's right, 200 million people, at $2.00 a ticket in 1918 dollars, where $2.00 was worth about $5,000,000,000 in current value.  ;)

I agree with you, it's most likely BS, and let's face it, they were all dirty rotten fibbers in those days and would say anything to hype a movie.  Not like now a days eh?

Russ 100 years ago everyone went to the cinema or theater, the only competition they had was sitting at home knitting or reading Dickens and the Bronte sisters for the umpteenth time.

Everyone had to see Gone With the Wind, it was the huge film of it's time, and it was rereleased very successfully again and again, it was even cropped top and bottom and presented as a cinemascope film [bites fist]. The only way to see GWTW  was at the cinema, it wasn't sold to TV until the late 70's.

Nowadays no one has to see films at the cinema, wait a few months and it's on dvd or wait a bit more and it's on satellite and cable. Millions are willing to pay high ticket prices to see Avatar so it's still a very impressive achievement.

Yeah but 200 million?  No one had cars, or shoes, or feet, and everything was 300 miles away.  How did 200 million fit into the theaters?  The screens were made of bark, and the film was projected via magic and required virgin lambs blood.  There's just no way 200 million saw it.  Especially when it took 3 years to earn $2, and the dollar wasn't actually invented yet, just written about by Jules Verne and made fun of by Mark Twain.  Edison wouldn't invent* "dollars" as we know them until 1932.  That's why we had world war 2.

*Edison stole the "dollar" from Teslas experiments....

Avatar is #1?!  All-time?!  Holy crap in a basket.........Cameron is "King of the World" again.

Hopefully it grabs an ass-load of Oscars so all the detractors that hang out in the Movies Area can go berserk............should make for some fun reading.

I was definitely more hot tempered back in those days Steve.  I've mellowed some since...........pftttt.  The last fracas I got into was just several weeks ago with some snot in the Blu-ray area.  I was called an internet bully-boy (it has a catchy ring to it doesn't it?) and he left in a snit.   Several of the bewildered posters in the thread turned against me and I was pelted with rotting vegetables..........twerps.  They're on my list............

Russell went one step further than we did Jim, he got himself banned... for a week or so, yep he's done some time. Hasn't been the same since they allowed him back, a lot gruffer and he walks funny too. [snort] Plus his posts are even more baffling now. I hear he spits every time a mod goes by, except Cees of course, Cees is one of us, one of us, one of us, one[STOP IT STEVE!]. Cees was the first person on the forum to post topless babes and get away with it too, in this thread, they're gone now so don't bother searching. Cees is Dutch, nuff said.

I did get a warning from the mods once, when I lost my rag on someone who posted a string of test posts here a few years ago. I can't remember what I said, the offending post was removed but it must have been close to ban-level, the traumatised tester run crying to the nearest mod. I woke up the next morning and saw a warning email, WTF, someone had complained about an evil presence in the testing area. I had to apologise to the little tester. I wish that post was still up I'd love to read what I said to him.

Hey I nearly forgot to mention Avatar in my post. Done. [Russ snarls]

Oh, stop over-dramatizing. It was more than two months ago -- ancient history, by internet standards -- and only one poster agreed with him. Everyone else pretty much ignored you, because they were too busy picking on the other guy.

There's a guy that hangs in the Movies area that's been banned like 5 or 6 times I think Steve.  I only know because we've butted heads in the past.   I remember they had to change the forum software because of his antics.  At least if Russel ever gets banned again they'll let him back as long as nobody is murdered.

Cees is alright.  I think he's still pissed at me for being on the opposing side during the Format War though.

He's got the coolest name on HTF for sure.   Cees Alons would be a fantastic name fore an expensive mens cologne or a James Bond villain.  :D  I'm thinking of changing my last name to Alons......Living with K is kind of dull.  James Alons....has a nice ring to it.

Speaking of Avatar, here's a snippet from Roger Eberts review:

"Avatar" is not simply a sensational entertainment, although it is that. It's a technical breakthrough. It has a flat-out Green and anti-war message. It is predestined to launch a cult. It contains such visual detailing that it would reward repeating viewings. It invents a new language, Na'vi, as "Lord of the Rings" did, although mercifully I doubt this one can be spoken by humans, even teenage humans. It creates new movie stars. It is an Event, one of those films you feel you must see to keep up with the conversation.

Well at least he's gone.......or he's too bust watching his NBNW Blu-ray over and over again.  You do know that he's seen it over 100 times Michael.  100 times!  Everyone needs to bow down and kiss his feet.

I'm not the only one who's skin he got under.  I think you got into it with him at one time if I remember correctly.

A whole month I got banned!  I think it was a month... at least half a month.  All because I replied to a guy who bashed me for being dyslexic and bashed Canada since I'm from there, by asking how he posts from 1920 since I didn't think the memeograph machines worked with the internet (which is a pretty good joke!).  Instant temp ban on me!  I didn't even get a warning, and the guy who literally violated at least 3 HTF rules got nothing!  It's a conspiracy damn it!  You yankee mods don't like that all the funny comedians come from Canada, that we have better social programs, free health care, an economy, oil, equal rights...  Is it any wonder why I no longer post anything other then kiss ass "Great job on the reviews!" & " that opinion is facinating and completely valid!"  It was so much easier pre-ban, I could post "Warner Brothers are fuckin' retarded now!"  Instead, I have to post "I understand the intent of the Warner Brothers archive program, but the current limitations in quality and the restrictions based on region blah blah faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaart!"   Who's got time for it eh?  :P

***BREAKING NEWS!***

Avatar causes nerd boners in CGI nerds, it's no longer considered appropriate entertainment for the southern states.  The CGI is to be replaced with pipe cleaner puppets.
Yep, that was him Steve.  that guy was full of shit.  Funny thing was how a few of the other members swallowed his BS and shoved their noses right up his arse.  How many times did he claim to have seen Logan's Run in the theater? 100? 200?  Who friggin gives a rats ass.

Another snippet from Ebert's brilliant Avatar review:

Watching "Avatar," I felt sort of the same as when I saw "Star Wars" in 1977. That was another movie I walked into with uncertain expectations. James Cameron's film has been the subject of relentlessly dubious advance buzz, just as his "Titanic" was. Once again, he has silenced the doubters by simply delivering an extraordinary film. There is still at least one man in Hollywood who knows how to spend $250 million, or was it $300 million, wisely.

That gave me a nerd induced chubby......erk

Banished to the Phantom Zone for a month Russ? Jeez dude who did you kill? Was it as bad as the time you were trapped in WAP Mode and almost freaked out? I think a few members are still in there somewhere...

Yeah I love Ebert, he went nuts over the film. So enthusiastic about the big movies, my kind of critic.

A friend of mine went to see Avatar last week with his wife, he loved it but she thought it was an hour too long, and all the action at the end bored her. Oh well, can't please em all. She loved Precious btw, a film that's about Steve-resistant as you can get, it's about a black girl who "endures unimaginable hardships in her young life. Abused by her mother, raped by her father, she grows up poor, angry, illiterate, fat, unloved and generally unnoticed." Hmmm thanks but I'll pass. I'll stick to sci-fi .But it's bound to get a bunch of Oscar noms next week.
um....  I think I'll be passing on Precious.  Life sucks sometimes, yeah I get it already....

I'm sure it's a fine film but .........me, I've got The Surrogates sitting here to watch, that's more up my alley.

My wife loved Avatar, but she generally enjoys f/x laden action sci-fi movies like I do which is unusual for the female species.  Wot a Woman!!!

She also enjoys weepers in the same vein as Precious but thankfully spares me the torment of forcing me to sit through 'em.
Precious, sounds like the kind of movie Russ and Liz might like.

I have only been in trouble once on the HTF. It was not to bad a thing, i made a joke. Guess someone didnt find it funny, so Cees reminded me that i should treat others as i would want to be treated. He didnt say those words to me, but that is the basic reminder, and it the rule i live by...cept when i am online.

I can mostly ignore people that i have no opinion of.

I did make a few guys mad, but didnt get in trouble, cause i told them to enjoy what they had, and stop whining cause all 12 seasons of **** are not on DVD. I told them i would enjoy the 5 seasons that are already out! They didnt like my comments, and wanted to burn me at the stake for not being a completist.

Gee, i remember when we didnt even get to own ANY movie. Only rich people got to have a few film prints of a favorite movie or TV show. So i am giddy just to own anything, and on Blu-ray at that!

Haven't seen Elizabeth here in a while Rick, I hope she's okay. Maybe she's tired of our rantings? She's probably already seen Precious.

You're lucky Jim, my Sandra wouldn't watch Avatar even if I had it in my hands and waved it in front of her face, er the film that is. I was watching the new Star Trek film on blu-ray a few weeks ago and the cursed woman refused to look at the screen, she usually reads a bit than nods off on the sofa when I put on my 'silly' films. Paranormal Activity was the last film she was engrossed in and compared to Star Trek nothing much happened in that, but it did scare her.

Btw there seems to be yet another version of Paranormal Activity with a completely different ending to the two endings I've seen so far. See spoiler... if you dare!

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
In this version, the girl kills her boyfriend and than walks slowly towards the camera covered in blood, she than suddenly cuts her own throat with the knife, blood gushes and she falls out of camera range. The End.
Paranorma Activity

A shadow on the door, but there's nothing there, is there? Brrrrr
post #24415 of 28319
Oh, I have been here and reading, but did not have anything to say about the Victoria Secret's former model or Avatar.  But thank you for missing my presence.

Oh, I do remember Russell's banishment -- I think it was for 2 weeks!

No, I haven't seen Precious, and am not interested in it.  I plan to see Crazy Heart this weekend.

Haven't had a chance to watch any Blus in a while -- behind on my recorded TV shows, and I've been reading recently.  I have Paranormal Activity, but haven't seen it yet.

I read this novel by Scott Sigler called Infected most recently, and it was one of those you couldn't put down.  A medical/sci-fi/horror thriller that was rather gross but entertaining.  Recently, for some reason, I feel like reading vampire/zombie/apocalyptic type of stories!

Elizaaabeeeth! Oh there you are! So, young lady how many times have you seen Avatar so far? We're doing a survey. 5-6 times? 3-D 2-D 1-D?

I keed.

Infected eh, great title for a film that, funny no one's thought of using it. This might be an interesting read, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies!

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Apparently it's a bestseller and more have turned up including -

Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters
I picked that book up.  Not Infected, the Sensible Zombies one.  I decided that since I can't be bothered to read the original book, I really can't be bothered to read a spoofed version so I'm mailing it to a friend in China. That's what I do with things I decide I don't like without actually attempting to like them, I send it off to china and let the Chinese deal with it!   Infected does sound good.  I'll have to remember it*.

I'm not watching Avatar tonight, I'm going to watch CHE: PART 2 (The Quickening).

Sign me off for PRECIOUS, I have no interest in it at all.  The title annoys the hell out of me.  Call the thing PUSH, or SAPPHIRE, don't call it 3 different things.  I was annoyed at first, but after finding out the horrid details of the story, it gets a giant pass from me.  Rape is only entertaining in John Water films and on OZ, it's a fact.

*Let's face it, I wont actually remember it...

Ahh, we are going to get an inch of ice tonight, then 4 to 12 inches of sleet, changing to snow, for tomorrow. Joy.

It's one of the rare books I enjoyed enough to recommend -- it was a library book and I lent it to a co-worker who just finished reading it.  He really liked it as well!  Well worth remembering, Russ.  I'm going to get his follow-up book, Contagious.  Most (all?) of his novels started out as podcasts -- I guess that's how authors end up getting published nowadays.

And Steve, those "Pride and Prejudice", "Sense and Senbility" and Zombies, etc. sound kind of intriguing!
Didn't bother with the alternate ending but I thought Paranormal Activity was just ok Steve.......the acting was a bit sub-par, would've been better with some big name stars like Brad Pitts and Angelina Jolly, a $50m budget for some some CGI effects and a bit of female nudity (Angelina, not Brad).

I like Jeff Bridges so I want to catch Crazy Heart when it hits video as long as Jeff doesn't play a black girl who endures unimaginable hardships in her young life, abused by her mother, raped by her father, she grows up poor, angry, illiterate, fat, unloved and generally unnoticed.

I almost forgot to mention Avatar in my post.  There I just did.
