Testy Area 51 - Page 801

Is that from the new Wolfman?
Is anyone else worried that the flick has been pushed back to Feb ?

I have UP on Blu, and Monsters Inc, and Logan's Run, North By Northwest, Star Trek, The Prisoner....all to watch still!
I have gotten Heat, Star Trek, Monsters Inc., Leon, North by Northwest and Love, Actually on Blu recently. They all look and sound phenominal. I cannot pick a favorite as they are all demo quality recordings. I also picked up Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture Collection and they have never looked or sounded as good.

Now my major problem is that I miss my front projection system even more.

Following Testy advice, I watched "UP" on the weekend.  Yes, it was good, and I agree that it just might be the best film of the year.  That said, a little warning about it being a bit sad would of been nice!  Here I am, in a room full of dudes, all of us weeping, it was like a group meeting instead of a movie night!

We had to watch Black Dynamite and Ultimate Fighting after wards to get our testicles back.  :P

Damn dude. You made me spit my Pepsi on my screen.

Rick, they finished filming The Wolfman in June 2008, under the direction of Joe Johnston, a usually very capable director, and it was originally going to be released late 2008. But than production difficulties led to it being pushed back to early 2009, this was changed to November 2009 and now finally it looks like it'll get released in Feb 2010. I mean it's The Wolfman for chrissakes not Mutiny on the Bounty, how difficult could it be?

aah Leon the Professional another great film I've forgotten about. I saw a 720p version of Star Trek the Motion Picture and it looked beautiful, the best I'd seen it since Dec 1979. The journey thru V'Ger looked completely different in High Def, those effects looked pretty fuzzy before but the amount of detail even at 720p is amazing. The copy I saw was not the directors cut, which I like, but the original 1979 theatrical version, my preferred version. I'm not a huge fan of directors cuts or altering movies, especially when they're getting quite old.

Looking forward to eventually picking up the entire set of Trek movies on Blu when the price drops, and it will.

I noticed at the shops yesterday that a lot of the new releases on Blu were getting to a more reasonable $20-$25.  Lots of deals to be found to.  They had a couple fo 3-packs for $30, one with the Kill Bill films and From Dusk To Dawn, and another with Death Proof/Planet Terror and Sin City.  All on my list to upgrade to Blu, but... do I wait for the "Kill Bill : The Whole Bloody Affair" and "Grindhouse" versions that have been rumoured?  I hoped to see Kill Bill come out when Basterdz hit in December, but it don't look like it.  Bum!

Sorry about that!  :P

Steve, "How The West Was Won", you watch the smile box version too?  how was that? I bought the SD of it, but I'm tempted for the blu, it's down to $16.  Not sure I love the film enough though.  The Searchers however, is getting down to that price too.

Russ, I watched 15mins of How the West Was Won in Smiley mode and turned it off, it just looked weird and distorted as if my tv screen suddenly went all wonky. It might have looked like that 45 years ago on the massive 'curved' cinerama screen but on my 42" set it looked like shit.

The Searchers
is a much better western than How the West Was Won which was just a series of cool looking set pieces designed to show off the cinerama process. If The Searchers looks as good as HTWWW on Blu I'll be very happy. Has it been reviewed here yet? Michael? Mike? M? ?
I'm not sure Steve.  I'm sure I saw a blurb somewhere about Mr. Robert Harris saying the Blu of The Searchers was top notch and film like.  the forum search feature brings up no mention.  The forum search feature is a bit of a gong show though, so I probably cocked it up.  Of course, that comment was probably from a year or more ago, so compared to BR discs of today, the actors probably look like waxy turd puppets or whatever the complaints were. :P

I might skip HTWWWWWHHWWH then is the smiley version is so disastrous.  The SD looked good enough up converted for my tired eye. :)

Steve - I own the original HD-DVD release of The Searchers and viewing that film on my projector was like being transported back 50 years to opening night.  Despite being an early release it is still one of the best looking HD transfers in my collection.  The level of detail in Monument Valley is a sight to behold.  (I haven't viewed the Blu-ray release but I would suspect that it uses the same encode.)

Great film, and a great transfer.  Highly, highly recommended.

- Walter.

"Highly, highly recommended" Thanks Walter, I can happily add that to my must buy on Blu list. Shame I can't say the same for Patton and The Longest Day, two other favourites of mine.

Russ, you might like the Smiley mode, there are people on the forum who enjoyed watching HTWWW that way and were hoping to see other films distorted that way in the future. Madness I say.

Steve, be sure to watch the doc on HTWWW. I liked it more than the movie. It had some fantastic shots in Smiley mode, that looked great even on my 52" LCD. My favorite shot in the doc, inside an active volcano. Filmed in 3 panels, from a B25...just amazing the balls the pilot and camera man had!

Its a must watch.

I second The Searchers.

Yeah, the Cineramamamamama doc is as good as the movie, and the smiley box doesn't look odd at all.

That said I'm more then pleased with the super expensive ultimate edition SD version I bought with all the doo-dads in a giant over sized box that takes up a bunch of shelf space, so I doubt I'll upgrade my copy.

So who's up to what this weekend?  I've lost track of new movies opening.  A friend of mine went and saw "The Fourth Kind", I can't believe none of us have seen it!  It's got Alaska, UFO's and Milla Jovovich.  It's as if Testy 51 had a brain, and hollywood used one of those things in "Strange Days" to peek inside it and make the perfect movie!  Anyways, he tells me it's very good and that I should go see it.  Of couse, the bastard didn't invite me to join him in the first place, but I digress!

The Road with Viggo Mortensons looks like a non-retarded versionof "2012" or whatever the Cusak end of the world film is.   I want to see.... BOTH OF THEM  [Cue Christou fainting].

I wont be going to the cinema this weekend though, I'm gonna try to watch that Prisoner remake instead.

I've seen that doc twice Rick, standard and blu, it is interesting. I wish they had included This is Cinerama as a special bonus extra, 57 years old and 115m according to IMDB. It was also a huge hit at specially equipped cinemas. The sequel This is Smellorama didn't do as well, in fact it stunk.

[stands up] I resent that implication! So whats this Prisoner thing you keep mentioning Russ? I thought at first it was about the original 60's series but now I'm beginning to suspect it's not, especially after you put the word 'remake' after the word 'Prisoner', see Testy has so got a brian!

I wanna see the Fourth Kind I saw the Thrid Kind decades ago and was wondering when they'll make a sequel. I wonder if  Richard Dreyfuss has a cameo.

I haven't seen 2012 yet, a friend saw it and told me that spectacular scenes of destruction are interrupted by laughable dialogue, um that's a given in the disaster genre isn't it?

I'm currently watching the George Pal War of the Worlds in Smiley Mode, well not actually it's called Super Live and stretches the sides of a 1.33 picture to 1.85, doesn't look too bad actually, the only giveaway is when there's a panning shot or when somebody is standing on the side of the screen and his head looks funny. The yanks and the Brits remade the Prisoner!  I don't know why I'm excited, I usually don't care for remakes of brilliant things.  It's got Magneto and Jesus in it.  It's blessed by God!

I think the brits are involved... wasn't it an AMC (whatever the hell that channel is) and a BBC (the lovely folks who have made all the great shows) co-production?  I don' really know, I just know all 6 episodes miraculously appeared on my hard drive the other day.  I TOLD YOU THIS WAS BLESSED BY GOD!

And it's just 6 episodes Russ? It's not a series? I'm suddenly very interested... hang on good bit coming up... the Martian putting it's suckers on Ann Robinsons shoulder, hey the Martian looks perfect in stretchy mode... I like it... um yeah Prisoner I want to see that.

I think it's just 6... oh!  That makes sense eh?  6?  ha haa.   I'll let you know how it is, The first 2 were shown together like a movie and I'm at least watching that on Saturday during movie night. :)

I watched the first hour of The Prisoner remake...it sucked. Boring is what it was. There is a thread about it.

I have UP to watch this weekend, and The Orphan. Good combo.
I watched all of the Prisoner remake and my major problem with it was it jumped around a lot without really coming to any kind of resolution as to why it all happened. Did the wife dream it all, did 6 make it all up in his mind? It was really a hodge podge of scenes here and there that didn't mesh all that well together.
Didn't watch the Prisoner remake..........

I did watch JJ Abrams Star Trek last night........I liked it.  Though I never knew Spock and Uhura had a thing going ........I'll have to pay closer attention next time I watch the series.

I've got GI Joe sitting here........maybe tonight.

I watched Star Trek last night too, very nice enjoyed it a lot except for the lens flares. People have complained about the over use of lens flares in this film and they have a point, there are hundreds of lens flares in Star Trek, they are in practically every scene. Seems the director liked their use and told the cameraman and effects guys to add them wherever they can.

star trek lens flares 1

Star Trek lens flares 2

We have Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds to watch tonight. I hope it's not a yapfest like his last one Death Proof.

In this time line they can pretty much do with the characters as they wish.

Last new film I saw was Tarantino's The Dirty Basterds, sorry Inglourious Basterds. I liked it, didn't love it. The characters didn't do anythng for me and I didn't care if they lived or died. Especially Brad Pitt and his goon squad. The leading lady was okay though I found her totally unsympathetic, maybe a better director could have made some of these characters more human but than we wouldn't have a Tarantino film with all the stylized trimmings that come with it. The anachronistic soundtrack, the OTT violence, playing with time, screwing with history, the homages, the injokes, the winks and the nods.

I'll probably like it more on the 2nd viewing, which is usually the case with QT's films. One of my favourite scenes was the 'Putting out Fire" scene and I think I know which bit Walter was referring to a while back.

It's funny you say that.  I'm worried I wont like it as much the second time!  I'm wondering if I was more blown away from it not being anything that I expected it to be.  Now that I know what to expect, it might not blow me away as much.  I'll find out when the Blu ray hit.  I have fond memories of it. :P

Only newish films I watched this weekend was "Twilight", the first one.  I'd probably of liked it more if I was 13 and born with a vagina.  "Crank 2", they mangaed to make a movie even more retarded then the first one.  It was so retarded it kind of lost me and I wonderd when it would end where as the first was just the right amont of retarded and I liked it.  "Drag Me To Hell", it's Sam Raimie, I liked it.

Golden Oldie : "The Wolf Man".  The old Lon Chaney Jr. one.  A friend was curious to see it since he's excited for the never to be seen remake.  He hates old movies, and by old films I'm talking about the early 60's pre James Bond films.  He loved this one though.  how about those apples eh?  Lon Chaney Jr. and his pants suit Wolf Man still packs a punch!

Oh, watched the Blu of Fight Club.  Looked great, and the movies damned good too.

So, I've been having to avoid HTF because of these Sprint ads which cause my computer to lock up.  Now there's an Epson ad which blocks out the whole page until you click to close it.  What is the deal?
It's a government conspiracy.

I get "newegg" ads.  I have no idea what they are, they want to sell me a point and shoot camera.  I don't know what that means either.  Do they have throw and hit cameras?  I don't know how to use a camera without pointing it at something and shooting a picture.  There's a picture of a little girl in a toque telling me I get 10% off.  This has to be violating a labour law, and how did she get to know so much about these damned cameras!

I still get the Samsung birds pecking at me during every visit. But it's pathetic and sad that some members rarely post on the forum because the ads are so obstructive. A few weeks ago I could only navigate around the forum by disabling javascripting. Otherwise I'd have to wait an hour for a page to open, and I can't post anything with java disabled. You can mention your problem in the advert thread in feedback Chris. If you're lucky your problem will go away, it's hit and miss here.

No problem here!  Just change all your browser settings, customize your proxys, download some ad blockers, delete those girly cookies, clear the cache, and it all works fine wot wot!  To hell with the fact that the rest of the internet works with no fuss, it's clearly your problem, not the HTF!  The internets not all that big after all, there's just you know, tens of tens of pages.  Hello!

I've gotten used to the new and improved (in the kind of way that Germany was improved by Hitler) HTF.  No longer automatically signed in?  Check!  Odd copy and paste commands?  Check!  Slow load times...  check!  The membership activity seems down from before, but thankfully all the annoying ones stuck around.  Not pointing fingers or anything....  ;)

On a serious personal note, it's been an odd year for me and my HT hobby.  My main info website went a bit wonk, my favorite release company Warner Brothers decided that Canada sucks and stopped releasing the value classic boxsets, the movie industry itself is kicking me in my one-eyed balls with the push for 3D on top of the mostly crap films the past couple of years, the Horror Challenge was a disaster... maybe the hobbies run it's course with me. :(

And honestly, the wonky HTF is the least of my worries, I know how hard you all work, don't mistake my teasing, I still like the place and appreciate the effort put in by Parker and the mods and all them.    :)

Nice post Russ. I like the 'wonky HTF' reference particularly. So apt. [cue mods glaring]

I agree that the dvd year hasn't been that great, no exciting box sets (except on blu-ray) like we used to have. I remember the years we had the super Superman set, the Alien Quadrilogy, the Matrix multidisc box and of course that exhaustive Blade Runner set.

I bought Terminator Salvation on Blu-ray yesterday and it wouldn't play on my Philips player, it was a UK disc bought from HMV. Looked at various blu-ray forums and some people had the same problem on their machines. I updated the firmware on the Philips but it didn't help, all I could see was the menu page and I couldn't click on anything, it wouldn't let me. So today I took the blu-ray back to the shop in disgust and swapped it with a good old standard dvd edition, at least I know that would work. Piss on new technology.

I usually come here during work, and I have no problems with ads or anything.  I don't see anything.  I come straight to Testy Area, if that makes a diff.  Sometimes, I find I am not logged in, though.

Last night, I decided to start watching "Supernatural Season 2" on DVD.  I adored Season 1, which I could watch as it aired.  Then, when it became CW, the channel was only available as a digital channel, which I don't get.  So I watched the first 4 or 5 episodes of S2 on youtube, but that was no way to watch a great show.  So I decided to watch it on DVD eventually, and it became a long eventually.  I'm starting over watching from the beginning of S2 and watched 2 eps last night.  I already have S3 on Blu and will wait for a nice price on S4 Blu since I will have time as I don't tend to marathon several seasons in a row.

There just is not enough time to watch things!  It has been several years, and I have not progressed beyond S3 of "OZ", for example.  I've only seen S1 of "Deadwood".  Course, by the time I get around to the next season, I'll have forgotten what's going on!  I have not watched S3 of "Veronica Mars".  In all these cases, the next season is sitting on my shelf.  I probably should concentrate on one series, like I did with "The Sopranos".  Hard to fit in, though, as I have about 20 series I watch weekly.  With these staggered seasons, when something ends or goes on break, another of my shows is ready to start!

Sigh. . .still no sign of "BS: All Saints Day" coming here.
