No, I didn't see the movie, I saw the 50 year old Twilight Zone episode and I'm guessing this is a rip off....

I thought I had remembered an episode of The Twilight Zone that had that story line. It's good to know that my brain has failed me in entirely yet.

Russell, was it a TZ, or an Outer Limits? I think it was an episode of OL.

Re: The Box.

I recall the episode of The New Twilight Zone (in the '80s) with Brad Davis and Mare Winningham.  The episode is described on this WIKI...

my bad, I'm remembering it in Black & White.  Anyone know if the movie is based on this?  It sure kind of looked like it in the tv commercial.

From the same Wiki article"

A film entitled The Box based on this story starring Cameron Diaz and James Marsden is currently in production and slated for release in 2009. It greatly expands upon the short story. Basil Hoffman, the actor who plays Steward in this episode, also appears in the film.[2]

Thanks, I'd vaguely read on imdb how people were calling the "The Box" a rip-off of something, but if it's simply another adaptation of that story, that doesn't seem fair.  Now, I understand certain scenes in the trailer better.

I read an interview with Troy Duffy, and it seems the "platform release" of "Boondock Saints II" was his idea.  (Or his putting a spin on the fact it could only get 65 screens.)  Anyway, I re-watched the trailer again and am more anxious to see it.  I think people are being overly mean about Sean's face (when you type his name in google, "plastic surgery" is one of the top options in the drop down box).  Granted, the trailer has such fast edits, but he looks OK.  His face in the elevator shot taken angling up makes him look like David Duchovny.  He was on "Criminal Minds" last month, so maybe I can find that somewhere.

Boondock Saints

The MacManus Brothers, Boondock Saints. Hey it's young Indy grown up.

We watched a chilling new horror movie this evening, Orphan. A couple adopt a little girl who turns out to be pure evil, and it's not long before the family is fighting for survival. The film is excellently made and effectively acted by the cast especially the little girl playing the orphan from hell, there's a great twist at the end you won't see coming.
4 out of 5.

Russ, looks like the phantom of the opera's fallen on hard times.

I upscaled The Incredibles on my new 42inch HD tv and it looked... incredible. So clear, sharp and detailed. Even the colour's stood out like never before. And the blu-ray will look even better? A whole new world is opening up for me here, it'll take me a while to adjust... I've already ordered blu-rays of 2001, 2010 and Close Encounters from Amazon. £30.24 for all 3. I'm picking up a Philips blu-ray player on monday... here we go again!

You have taken your first step into a larger world.

Congrats on taking the plunge.  I am reasonably sure that you will enjoy the 2001: A Space Odyssey Bd.   Watching this in High Definition was a near-religious experience for me.

Thanks Walter I am adamant that I'll only be buying my top favourites on Blu. I'm not going to replace all my DVDs, the Incredibles looked perfect upscaled maybe because it was a cartoon. I watched Ultraviolet upscaled this evening and that looked great too. So I'm happy with the upscaling, the Toshiba tv is the full 1080p and has had good reviews.

Looking forward to watching Kubrick's masterpiece on blu-ray next weekend. I've seen it a bunch of times at the cinema, the last time was in the 80's. Still top of it's class.

Holy sh*t, its not April fools day is it? Steve is going Blu!?!
A few thoughts. The Incredibles is a...well...incredible DVD. Its not going to be a religious experience on Blu-ray, when it comes out on Blu, for that matter. But it will indeed look better. That brings me to the other point, you have 42 inches of TV, if your seating distance is to far, the increased resolution offered from Blu will be negated. Of course thats true for any TV, but with HD you can be a tad closer to the set than you might think.

I am sure you know all this, but hell, how often do we get to go into full geek mode. Enjoy my friend!

Oh, and be sure to update/ check the firmware after you unpack it from the box. See if its the latest.

Thanks Rick, the tv is about 6ft or 7ft from where we sit which is quite near I suppose. But the way I see it if I'm going to get a bigger tv, my previous was a 32inch Hitachi, and I push it to the back of the room because of the size than what have I achieved? It'll look about the same size as my previous tv from that distance so we kept it at the same position. It is a lot brighter, too bright I have it on "dynamic mode" which made the Incredibles stick out like it was friggin' 3-D! So I still have a lot of tweaking and experimenting to do before I get it to the 'optimum' settings for our abode.

Yea, thats what im saying too. If anything bring it a tad closer for your Blu-ray viewing. Enjoy the glow coming from your new TV.

Glow? My eyes are still sore from looking at Incredibles in dynamic mode!   Next animated movie I watch I might be wearing sunglasses. [snort]  I'm tempted to bring the tv closer, not sure Sandra will want that coming between us though. [falls off chair]

300 'blu' movies already eh. Impressive. Let's see how many I have this time next year. All depends on how much cheaper they get too...

I've kind of lost track of time, but it must be a couple of years since I went Blu.

I think there might be some good holiday deals this year!

Hoho nice, the Darth Vader pooch looks like he's already crossed over to the dark side.

Elizabeth, you're not the only member complaining about not getting the Boondock Saints in their area, check out the Box Office thread.

I saw A Serious Man today. I just did not like this Coen Brothers film.  Not that they have to stick with a certain style, but it just felt very different from their other films.  All the "hilarious" blurb critics certainly have a different sense of humor from me.  While the lead actor was quite good and there were some humorous moments, I found the film kind of boring overall.  And that ending. . .

November 1st, and the scary movie challenge is over. I watched a few more horror movies, but i didnt bother to post them. I have also skimmed through the thread, but jeez some of those reviews...100,000 words on movies NO ONE ever heard of. Still, it was a fun read.

Thanks for kicking it off Russ.

Boo! Everybody have a good Halloween? Poltergeist was our big horror movie, still enjoyable after all these years. And I watched the first and best Halloween movie later. Hard to believe it's 31 years old. I still remember the cinema posters for it.

Where is Russ? The scary challenge is over and the host is missing in action. Who won? I think I came in last with 9 films listed, he proudly boasted.

I bought Snow White on blu and a blu-ray player to play it on. I'm fully blu now, woohoo!

Weakest Link a few minutes ago -

Anne - What is the surname of the famous family of actors named Henry, Peter, Jane and Bridget?

Young lady - Bardot?

Re: Weakest Link,  I recall a Jeopardy show about a month ago where the final category question was Movies.

Paraphrasing the question:  Name the AFI 100 star who only appeared in three lead roles.
One of the contestants answered:  Jimmy Stewart.

(Now to be fair, I am certain that this individual would probably best me in plenty of other categories.)

By the way, the answer (which I did know) was:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
James Dean

I'm here!  Yes the scary movie challenge is over, but the final tallies are still trickling in, so maybe tomorrow I'll post the final final update and kill the damned thing already!

Congrats on going fully blu Steve!  JNow go buy THE PRISONER in Blu, I think I'm going to end up doing it!

Here's a music magazine I saw on vacation in Athens.
