Rick:

What I am saying is that the 1st episode of Enterprise had a bumpy forehead Klingon and not a Klingon from the TOS era. Since Enterpise was before TOS he should have looked like a TOS Klingon or more human like and not a TNG bumpy head Klingon. For some reason that continuity error really bothered me.

Saw The Invention of Lying yesterday.  It was OK, but not particularly inspired.  And just got back from Zombieland.  Wow, this movie was LOUD!  Zombies shrieking in your ear at a very high volume.  Anyhow, it was quite fun, but not as funny as I expected.

can't believe you got to see both already...I've been wanting to see them both too. Thanks for the warning on Zombieland.

I'm curious about Lying, mainly because I like Gervais.  He's only really been good in the BBC The Office though, in most other things I've seen him in he's a bit annoying.  I haven't seen Extras yet though, it's supposed to be quite good.

Zombieland wont get a watch from me till this weekend I don't think.  :(  I did get in some non-horror films though, here's a round up!

Defiance
3/5
If there was a hell, I'd go to it for saying this, but this is a by the numbers Jewish based WW2 picture. I thought it would be a different take as far as seeing a Jewish resistance in action, but it wallows too much on the suffering, which is handled better in other films, and completely rips off other movies wholesale (Spielberg should get royalties from that final battle scene). So as an emotional drama, it doesn't work, as an action picture it doesn't work, but Craig and Schreiber are damned good in it so it's worth a watch.

Passengers
It's billed as a thriller, except it doesn't thrill. It goes from ok to confusing, then has an ending that had me tell it to go fuck itself.

Thank Your Lucky Stars
Another Warners war time kitchen sink musical. This one was pretty fun, Eddie Cantor is great in the lead, but who thought Errol Flynn would steal this show?

But..but Russ, those aren't horror films! Aren't you competing in the challenge?  I've managed to see 3 films so far but some of those guys are already well into the 20-something mark, it's only been what 5 days? Do they spend the entire day watching horror films? Don't they work? And you know you can't even prove anyone's actually watching anything, just take my word for it mate I saw 12 horror films this afternoon! I know it's all in fun but it's turning into a joke.

I liked Defiance, more the 2nd time than the first, good performances, based on real events, some good action too. I've enjoyed most of Ed Zwick's films, I suppose Glory is still his best.

I see Elizabeth was disappointed with two films I was interested in seeing. Surrogates was a flop at the cinema so that just leaves Roland Emmerich's 2012 for my next trip to the cinema, and I think thats next month.

I watched The Italian Job on Blu-Ray yesterday.  Wow, this 40-year-old film sure looked wonderful on Blu-Ray!  Nice job!  And the so-youthful Michael Caine reminded me of Jude Law -- which makes it unsurprising Law has played 2 of his roles so far, I guess.

October doesn't have too many interesting releases for me.  Maybe Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant might be interesting. . .  And I will believe it when I see it as to whether The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day actually comes here on 10/30!

Gervais actually had some really strong poignant moments in "Lying".  My sister thought the movie felt very "British".  And while there's really no place in time specified, it had a very 60's vibe to it.  I liked Gervais in "Ghost Town" as well.

Thats what im saying too! The 4th season of Enterprise introduced the "human" Klingons. It was a genetic accident, that would take about 100 years to cycle out of the gene pool. So, Klingons have always had bumpy foreheads, it was only because of the genetic tampering that they changed Of course that doesnt explain why no one knew why the Klingons looked human, and then not in say, the DS9 Tribble episode.

The funny thing about the challenge, that no one actually says, is if you "Win", you're basically the biggest loser with no life. So really, what benifit is there to cheating? I've come in second a couple times, and let me tell ya, I did little but watch movies, and any socializing I did was movie watching with others.  I think the most I've gotten in, in one day, was about 6 or 7.  Watch one at 12:30am, one in the morning in bed before I get up.  a couple in the afternoon, then some more at a movie night with friends and with average running times, it's possible!

LIz, I was surprised to see a new Boondock Saints movie.  I never thought the original was as great as many claimed it, and didn't think it a big enough hit to make a sequel out of it.  That documentary on the director going bonkers was better.

The mummified remains of actor Roger Moore appeared in an advert for the post office just now on tv, how old is he 82? Wow! In the ad he pokes fun at his image saying he made a fortune just by looking suave (and occasionally raising an eyebrow). I like Roger, I read his bio earlier this year, he has a great sense of humour and hates to say bad things about anyone. He's still good mates with fellow-Persuader Tony Curtis, who I think is 84 or 85. Talking of aging actors, Kirk "I'm Spartacus" Douglas is... 93! [bites fist]

Russ maybe there should be a multiple award finish to the scary movie challenge, an award in the "abnormally high movie count" category, and award for "feasibly doable movie count" and how about an award for least horror films watched during October? [punches air] By ethnicity? Most horror films watched by a Greek? Canuck? Hawaiian? By age? Oldest and youngest? How many horror films watched while naked? Sozzled? Passed out?
I really like The Boondock Saints.  I may need a refresher watch before the sequel, though.

I think I changed my mind on Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant -- the TV ad for it looks like some silly little children's movie!

Cirque Du anything sends shivers up my spine!  I can't stand that Cirque stuff, much less in a horror movie.  It doesn't even make sense!

Looks like you made someone mad in the movie challenge Russ.

I thought i was on a role watching 3 movies, and 1 episode of The X Files. But like you said Steve, some of these guys are at 30 movies! I wonder how many are getting watched to "folding the laundry". I know thats the ONLY way i could watch many of the flicks, in question.

Rick. Russ sent me an email, he seemed angry with me for not participating more in the challenge, I replied that I was fully prepared to give it a go until a couple of the silly sods started leaving their videos on all day and IMO spoilt the game. However many I watch I won't do more than a fraction of their final score, so I'll just watch the occasional horror and list it, I'm still in the game but only just.

I was going to watch a horror flick tonight until I spotted John Carpenter's Dark Star on the shelf and had a sudden urge to watch that instead, goofy sci-fi but no I can't count it as horror.

ooh Russell someone's had enough of your fookin' language in the horror challenge, the threads gone from fargin' 13 to R rated because of you! Tomorrow someone might suss out that you haven't actually watched any horror movies yet. [snigger]
Damn  Steve, isnt it almost 2 AM? Dark Star is funnier when your sleep deprived, i guess.
You guys wont get offended if i say damn, will yeah?

I expected Russ to get back into the game, defending his "review" of the Godzilla movie. But he must be formulating his counter argument. Or he wants to be #1, and he is getting 20 movies under his belt by midnight!
Yup, I'm on my 125th film!  I've decided that just thinking about movies counts!  I win!

Steve, Godzilla movies count damn it!  Any movie with a monster, especially bashing about counts.  Snow White counts too I think, the witch is scary!  :P

I'm not defending my review, because seriously, fuck the plot, it didn't need one, it had a shitload of monsters in it, nuff said. ;)  I thought it was a horror movie thread, not a Shakespear discussion.

I was sad to see that Roger Ebert didn't enjoy Rape Squad as much as I did. :(

Yeah I was nearly off to bed when I saw your post Rick.

And I thought I'd mention these Samsung birds I've got here at the top of the forum over in feedback, they chase my pointer all over the place. Have you ever had birds chasing your pointer Rick? It was one bird, but now there's a 2nd Samsung ad and all I seem to be doing is opening the Samsung home page.

Maybe it's telling me it's time to go hi-def, it's a sign!

Well Dark Star had an alien shaped like a beach ball. Not really scary though.

Is Silence of the Lambs a horror film? I suppose if a film has the ability to scare an audience than it can be included. Dirty Harry had a serial killer too but the film wasn't scary. Van Helsing scary?
Van Helsing would count because it's emotional torture to watch in the first place.... NARF!! :P

I've never seen Dark Star, so I have no idea if it counts.  Way I see it, if the main drive of a film is the monster, then it pretty much counts.  Last year I watched "The Day The Earth Caught Fire", and wasn't going to count it since it's pretty boring and the threat is the earth falling into the sun or whatever it was, no monsters, no horror element... 3 people told me it should count, so there you go.  Before I started playing along they had the rule "If the blue monkeys in the Wizard Of Oz scare you, it counts".  Obviously previous years were bogged down in nerd debates and Matt Stone or whoever it was threw that in to keep it on track.  Rape Squad was technically a sleazy crime thriller, but man, that Jingle Bells guy was up there for menace, and grindhouse films go hand in hand right?  "Dark Star" was always considered drive in fare, and John Carpenter is a horror icon, I 'd count it.  "Elvis : The Movie"... not so much...  ;)

I'm not losing any sleep over it, hell, I'll probably get kicked out for bad language before it's over I guess...  A bunch of people will quit anyways halfway through when I get annoyed with the whole thing and start posting swear filled reviews of horror porno films with screen caps. :P

Nothing is chasing my pointer. How do you rate Steve? Samsung wants you! If, and when you go Blu, go Sony. Thats my 2 cents, for what its worth.

Russ, Godzilla counts, it counts man! I only own 3 of them myself, and i cant remember the names of them, cept Monster Zero!

Do horror comedies count? Abbott and Costello? Young Frankenstein? Space Bollocks the Movie?

I'll definitely watch a horror tomorrow Russ promise and I will tone down my language just in case and make sure the picture I post won't have any blood or nudity. I may just post the title of the film.

Rick, I've got my sights set on a 37inch Toshiba, £450, good price. 1080p. I'll order the cables first just to prepare myself. A 2 meter hdmi and scart to hdmi should be okay. The Toshiba even has a USB slot, why I don't know.
Many TVs have USB slots now. Some can be used for pictures, and some TVs have them for firmware updates! Why, i have no clue. Even my Denon receiver can be hooked up to the internet for firmware updates. Mine isnt, nor is my TV. But i do update my Blu-ray player when i need to.

I already have a plays-everything except HD Philips dvd player with upscaling abilities, so I've taken a first step on the road to hi-def. Once I buy the HD tv everything else will fall into place, I just dread buying a blu-ray player and some of you already know why.

Russell, Comrade Reubenovich has reviewed a documentary you may be interested in, it contains "plenty of film clips featuring (as the box cover promises in a rare case of truth-in-advertising) “gratuitous nudity, senseless violence, car crashes . . . and a bit of kung fu.” and it's hosted by Quentin Tarantino! ooh. It's called Not Quite Hollywood and deals with "Ozploitation films" [snort]. Should be worth a watch eh?

I will be watching a horror film tonight, I'll just make sure I don't glance at the sci-fi shelf when I'm picking one. Yep I have my dvds sorted out by genre. Makes sense when you're in the mood for a certain type of film.

I've seen that on advertised on Amazon and that Steve, might be worth stealing off the internet :P

Just saw this, Adrian Brody in a Predator movie?  I'm not sure this should be supported or not, but I'll go see it :P

Adrien Brody in the Schwarzenegger part? Nooo I just can't visualise it Russ, maybe if he played the predator instead. Why are they remaking this still stonking good action film, are they insane? I wouldn't be surprised if they remade Verhoeven's fantabulous RoboCop next. Bastards!

We don't steal off the internet Russ, we're good, decent people. Maybe Michael can lend us his copy? Who lives nearest to him?
You mean this Robocop?

I love both the originals of these, I doubt the 2010 remake of Robocop will be as deliriously nasty as Verhovens.

I live on the same continent as Michael, but I bet we're about the same distance.  I'm R1 though so Michael should send it to me.  how about it Mike?  :P

[spits drink] Unbelievable. The original is an 80's sci-fi classic, cyborg films just don't get much better than that! At least if it was anime or something unusual.

A Total Recall remake is planned too [bites knee] but at least with that one they might make it more faithful to the original Philip K.Dick story "We Can Remember it For You Wholesale".

So, is anyone going to see "Astro Boy"?  Every time I see ads for it, it just doesn't look or feel right to me.  I grew up on Tetsuwan Atom and even had little rain boots with him on it.  It took an adjustment even to think of him as Astro Boy many years ago.

Nope. I was more a Marine Boy fan anyway...and Kimba!

How the HELL can they remake Predator! Thats just not right. I am OK if they want to remake Total Recall. Its not THAT good, but Predator is sacred ground!

It's a no for me as well, I was excited when I heard about it, but it looks awful.  Animation looks cheap, and yup, just awful.

I liked the 80's astroboy in colour.  It had a feature where Astro would tell professor Flutenose about the adventure you jsut watched, and you had to guess what part Astro goofed up telling.  The bastard part was, they never told you what the answer was, and he never seemed to screw up telling the story!  I bet it got lost in the translation!

Youtube's not working for me so you're saved from that theme song. :(
