Babylon AD could have been so much better, some of the action was well done but ultimately I was left unimpressed. There was talk of a much longer cut, not sure if that would have helped though.

I saw a film last night I don't think you'll enjoy watching Elizabeth, though the director might interest you, the director of Dancer in the Dark and Dogville, Lars Von Trier. Here's the review I posted in Movies -

Sick! Disturbing! Unwatchable! At least one newspaper here wanted Lars Von Triers controversial new film banned. I watched Antichrist last night and it left me bored more than anything else. It has nothing to do with the Bible, 666, Damien or the end of the world (sadly, I wish it was).

There are just two actors in the film, Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg, the story simple, the film opens with the couple fornicating with graphic close ups of genitalia, meanwhile their baby boy climbs up to the window and falls to his death, this is the opening few minutes of the film and sets up the main story. The couple are overcome with grief and guilt and they both go a little mad, particularly the wife. Thats basically the whole story, the nastiness comes from what they do to each other, I'll spoilerise a couple of the more disturbing scenes that come up -

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
There are graphic shots of an erect penis ejaculating blood and close ups of a clitorise being snipped off with a rusty scissors. There is also a shot of a trapped fox eating itself.
Not a film for the faint hearted. But the most disturbing film I've ever seen is still William Friedkin's The Exorcist, I saw it at a young age in a rerun back in the 70's and it haunted me back then, I've never seen a film since to match that for pure demonic evil. It's also my favourite horror movie.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
A scene from Antichrist.

Steve, I agree that Antichrist does not sound like my kind of movie.  Way too disturbing.  A shame, as Charlotte Gainsbourg is one of my favorite actresses and I like Willem Dafoe a lot.  I hate it when actors I like are in a project that I otherwise know is not my type, is too violent, too stupid, etc.  I feel I want to see it for them, but I know I'm not bound to like the film.  In this regard, I hate that Aaron Eckhart is in Love Happens with Jennifer Aniston.  He often picks edgy roles (In the Company of Men, Towelhead), and I try not to judge without seeing, but this looks like some sappy dramedy.  I'm also a bit tired of seeing Ms. Aniston.

I suppose you could always look away when things get ugly Elizabeth, no it's not worth it. I can't honestly recommend Antichrist. Horrible film.

Road House (1989)

Point Break (1991)

RIP Patrick Swayze. So sad, he was only 57. I think I'll watch Road House and Point Break this week as tribute.

R.I.P. Mr. Swayze.  I consider Point Break my favorite action film.

I watched Dude, Where's My Car for the first time last night.  As you can tell, I haven't been in the mood for more "intellectual" fare recently.  I'm under a lot of stress, so I kind of want to watch things that don't tax my brain right now.  Anyhow, the cast looked SO YOUNG!  Jennifer Garner and Marla Sokoloff looked so young and cute as the twins.  The story kind of went in a direction I didn't expect.

Oh dear Patrick Swayze died.  It is sad, though I never cared for him much in the films.  I liked RED DAWN though... "WOLVERINES!!!"  They're remaking Red Dawn, that's really sad!

I only got one thing to say about ANTI-CHRIST... "HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT!"  Okay, that was 9 things to say. :P

Norman Borlaug passed away this Sunday.  Never heard of him?  Shame, the news was eclipsed by Kanye West I suppose.  West acts like an asshole on an asshole awards show, and no one pays any mind to the passing of someone who is directly responsible for saving about 1,000,000,000 lives with his radical agriculture movements.  Maybe someone will do a biopic on him.

Movie reviews!
Five Deadly Venoms
The legendary martial arts flick that spawned a rap group ends up being kinda boring for the first half that kills the kick ass second half. Assholes.

The International
Clive Owen gets mixed up in a bunch of banking bullshit. Good thing I like Clive Owen and Banks!

Fast and Furious
I'm pretty sure that with the right mods, these guys would literally fuck the cars. It ends up that despite the constant stolen glances, Walker and Vin Diesel don't even ride each other in a Fast & Furious fashion.  There is no plot and Rodriguez gets killed way to early to stick out the rest of this shit fest.

Knowing
4/5
Cage gets involved with doomsday sudoku and all hell breaks lose! This one was good, and you should see it and shut up about Cages hairline already! Oh, they seriously blow shit right the fuck up, so you should watch it for that too. IN YO' FACE 2013, or whatever that Myan crap one is called.

The Haunting in Connecticut
Not bad for a bullshit ghost story other then the stupid music stings that kill all sense of suspense and horror. Worth watching for Elias Koteas doing his best Robert De Niro impression

I rewatched COLLATERAL to.  That's a good one.  Jamie Fox isn't annoying in it and Cruise was good as the asshole hitman.

I've never seen POINT BREAK, but have seen DUDE, WHERE'S MY CAR about 4 times.  :O

I knew I forgot a review!  Liz's post reminded me!

Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay

I never cared for the first, but really, who would of thought that the best satire of post 9/11 life would be this?

Also, the internet hates me, so the site I use for these reviews is saying this year old review is 4 days old, so you get it as a bonus since it's from the horror challenge and I don;t think I posted it here:

Dracula cerca sangue di vergine... e morì di sete!!!, (Andy Warhol's Dracula)

Even more plodding then Frankenstein, and Udo wasn't as fun. I doubt I'll be re watching this anytime soon. Seeing as Paul Morrissey and Andy Warhol seemed more interested in filming soft core porn with this. Might as we track down the porno "Dracula Sucks" and watch it. It can't be any more obnoxious in it's nudity and execution.

Speaking of which:

Dracula Sucks
3/5
I first heard about this Dracula porno in David J. Skals excellent book "Hollywood Gothic" which should be required reading along with his equally excellent "The Monster Show". As a porno, it sort of sucked in the non-good way. As a Dracula spoof, it worked pretty good, with the Vampire repeating many lines from the classic 1931 film. Actually, if this would of been done more serious instead of comedic, it would of been a 4 star film.

Ahh good old stupid horror challenge!  Maybe I will participate again this year.  I'm sure I can find more horror porno films to go against all the usual crap watched. :P  Look at that box cover, the film looks absolutely vile with that German writing on it!  I think it translates as "Lovely, you are so good!"  Steve?  Get the little lady to translate that for us eh?  :P

[sprints into frame] What's that? They're remaking Wolverines Russ? Whoa who's playing Hugh Jackman?

I hope they make a sequel to Knowing don't you?

Hey I kinda liked The Haunting in Collateral, is that the one with that Megan Fox lookalike? she was real pretty.

I confess to never having heard of Norman Balrog, how many lives did he save and why was it not on the news?

Dracula Sucks? Vampirella's currently sleeping the sleep of the undead.

I tried warning people off seeing Triers Von Lars disturbing new film - Antichristou, but it doesn't work on Russwell, he's chomping at the bit to see it. Are you chomping at the bit Russ? The bit? Chomping? Russ? psst

After I saw The Exorcist I couldn't sleep for a week and I have never watched it again. A good friend had a book on films that I read a few years back and in it they mentioned that Friedkin used a lot of subliminal messages thoughout the film at the theaters to drive up the impact. Subliminal messages had been banned from TV for years but not so in the movie industry. After the effect on viewers with The Exorcist they were banned from use in movies too. That is why it didn't have nearly the same effect on people when it was released to video years later as the subliminal messages were removed.

Russell, you MUST see Point Break.

Looks like another "don't need to really go to the theater" weekend.  If I do, I think I will see Cold Souls.

Steve, Norman Borlaug was a genius agronomist (a field which doesn't get geniuses very often).  He developed the dwarf wheat strains which, by spending their energy making grain instead of stalk, yielded enough to make India self-sufficient in food, & arguably prevented a massive global famine in the last third of the twentieth century.  He lived in Dallas, just a stone's throw from me.
The Exorcist never did much for me.  Rosemarrys Baby is the one that gave me nightmares.  I vowed never to get pregnant after that one.  So far so good!  I don't think Haunting had the Megan fox look alike.  Are you thinking of The Unborn?  That one had a hot brunett seeing ghost kids.  Or something, Gary Oldman was good in it.

Liz, I love Hot Fuzz, and I heard about all the homages.  I really do have to check out Point Break.  Maybe on the next movie night I'll convince my friends to watch it since I'm sure one of them must have it.

Point Break was a really good action flick directed by Kathryn Bigelow, who has the excellent Hurt Locker out this year. I loved the skydiving scenes in particular, beautifully filmed and the music enhances the sequence perfectly. Unlike the other actors Swayze really did jump out of the plane and made sure the camera caught it all on film. The insurance people were not amused.

Chris, I never heard of this guy before yesterday. Yes, I do watch the news.

So we were both disturbed by The Exorcist, except you never watched it again while I couldn't wait to buy it on video.

I bought The Exorcist for £30 in 1981 and thats a lot of money for a film in 1981, especially for an 18 year old. The film was banned shortly after and was never seen again in Britain until the late 90's when our old censors were replaced by more modern people and more films were left uncut than ever before. The Exorcist was released in cinemas again and I was first in line to see it at the Warners cinema in Leicester Square, an area which is full of cinemas. And I now own 3 dvds of it too.

Funny you should talk about subliminal messages Parker, in the recent directors cut of the film Friedkin has added subliminal images of the demon throughout the film, the film didn't need it and it cheapens it IMO, though I did like the inclusion of the 'spiderwalk' which sees the possessed Regan crawl down the stairs on her back spewing blood which was pretty unsettling.

Speaking of scary movies, one of my all time faves got the remake treatment, and holy pumpkins does it look good!  The Wolfman is about the only thing coming out in the future I'm excited for.  The posters still say October, but I heard it's bumped to February.  WAAAH!

The Informant with Matt Damon looks good, but not a must see at the theater for me.

Wow the Wolfman looks fantastic! Better than I thought it was going to be, why are they releasing it next year? I want to see it at Halloween! [sobs]

The original is a favourite of mine too. The Wolfman, Daybreakers, Shutter Island, a good start to 2010 I must say. And there's a big new Chris Nolan film out next summer, Inception. And Iron Man 2... plus Stallones The Expendables [bites fist].

Isn't Solomon Kane starring James Purefoy out soon, it's already got some good reviews, we need a trailer!

At least we have more room to type in now, even if our avatars have shrunk a bit.

I miss Russell's doodled avatar, especially the fanged Halloween one, don't think we'd be able to make it out now at this size.

I found the trailer to Solomon Kane, looks good. James Purefoy as the iconic Puritan swordsman in hat and coat looks a bit like Hugh Jackman in Van Helsing [Rick shudders]. Robert E. Howard wrote the stories, but his most famous creation is Conan the Cimmerian, Barbarian, Usurper, Conqueror, King!

Nice trailer. I will watch out for that one for sure at the theaters.

A little too much sharp objects for me, but I like James Purefoy.  Certainly a change of pace from seeing him as "The Philanthropist".

I saw Cold Souls today.  Wow, I was pretty bored with this slow-paced film.  The premise is so promising, yet it doesn't really run with it.  It doesn't take the all-out comedic route with the notion of stored souls, and settles for a sometimes humorous, semi-angsty, thoughtful view on the subject.
Finally got around to watching Woverine. It was just OK. A bit long, but its not the stinker i read it was.

I probably wont own it. Felt like a one time watch.

Watched Watchmen too, for the 3rd time. I see new things every time i watch it. Its like the Blade Runner of the 21st century.
Watched Rumor Has it. . . on Blu-Ray today.  You know, it wasn't bad.  I know I said I'm tired of seeing Ms. Aniston, but I do like my Kevin Costner.  I may eventually get around to seeing The Postman.

Rumour has it? I don't remember that one, all I know is the Donna Summer song of 30 years ago, yes I was a bit of a fan, the disco diva, catchy songs... Sittin' here, eatin' my heart out waitin' for some lover to call, dialed about a thousand numbers lately, almost rang the phone off the wall. [jumps on desk] Lookin' for some hot stuff baby this evenin, 'I need some hot stuff baby tonight gotta hav[STOP IT STEVE!] oh alright. I was enjoying that.

Anyway I saw District 9 recently, wasn't that impressed with it. A spaceship appears over Johannesburg in 'Sath Afreeka' and the aliens turn out to be pathetic insect-like creatures looking for a home or something, anyway 20 years later the area where they live has turned into a ghetto and people have lost interest in the creatures dubbed 'prawns', as if that would ever happen in the real world. Thats what I didn't find believable in this film, that aliens would land on Earth and after the initial excitement and fear, we would lose interest in them. Yeah sure.

District 9

The effects were reasonably good, a lot of the film is shot in shaky-cam and the lead actor has never acted before but does a pretty good job of it even if he does look like some geezer they found walking past the set one day. The film has a dreary, grotty look and feel to it, but than it is set in alien slums! [snort] It's not the most pleasant film, though I did like some of the violence, the creatures, pathetic though they be, can tear a man apart in seconds. And I like the fact they only speak in their clickety cluck alien tongue (did they have tongues?) and not in perfect English, like the lizard aliens in V did (hey I remembered V, was a big fan of that 80's mini-series)

District 9 is an interesting alien invasion film with a twist, but I didn't like it much. I'll give it 3 out of 5 for attempting something different. A rental.

Steve:

I felt the same way about D9. I just couldn't really get into it. I never took anything from a SCI-FI point of view away from it. It was more about how "alien" cultures are taken care of by the world at large. I mean you basically get:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
1) The Aliens show up.
2) We go and get them off the ship somehow and then decide to make them all live in a camp together.
3) They like cat food.
4) It is decided they need to be moved to another location.
5) The guy they select to evict the aliens is sprayed with some black goop and is then slowly turned into one of them.
6) His father-in-law wants to take him apart for body parts so his company can use the alien weapons because only the aliens can use them.
7) The aliens never use their weapons. They just let the humans beat them up and shoot them even though they are stronger and have weapons like sleeping exoskelatons.
8) Our main guy goes and gets the container that changed him so the other main alien character can get back to the ship and go home.
9) The main alien character leaves the rest of his alien buddies back on the planet with no way to get off themselves.
10) The main character is finally turned into one of them and sends paper flowers back to his wife.

Good post and points chief, that would have made a neat addendum to my review, maybe next time we'll work together on a movie review.

"addendum" I like that word, you don't see it used much in forums, I like the way it sounds "aaaddennndummmm", like baby talk.

Well, hopefully the proposed sequel, District 10 The Prawn Ultimatum will be an improvement.

I hear the Nigerian government has banned the film, & is demanding reparations from the producers, because it portrays Nigerians in a bad light.  They are, it seems, especially incensed by the idea that Nigerian prostitutes would have relations with aliens.
Re: District 9 and Parker's point 7.

Well, they are "alien", so we really aren't necessarily supposed to understand their motivations.  Perhaps after experiencing the traumatic event(s) that necessitated their arrival on Earth, they simply weren't psychologically capable of anything other than passive behaviour.

The film started slowly, but picked up momentum after the 30 minute mark, I found it to be pretty enjoyable despite the bleak environment and story line.  I enjoyed the evolution (dramatically) of the lead actor in the film.  The FX worked well and were well integrated.

Duodenum!  I like palindromes... RACECAR!

I've skipped District 9 after hearing people go on about it being a touching metaphor of blah blah blah.  I want aliens blowing stuff up, and not not INDEPENDENCE DAY style!

I haven't heard of Liz's movies, yet again, and I failed at watching POINT BREAK this weekend.  I have heard of that Soloman Kane film, I thought it was already out in Britland, no Steve?  I think it played the Toronto Film fest or something, my friend was blathering on about it and we both lamented that it should of been Lance Henrikson in the lead 10 years ago.  He looks weathered and sharply featured as described in the books.  You should read the Howard stories if you haven't, really good stuff, and very weird. :)

Watchmen the new Blade Runner Rick?  Thats just about the most praise I've heard for it!  I liked the movie, but if you want depth, read the comic. :)

I watched a real hodge podge of movies!

Killshot
2.5/5

A good cast in a by the numbers movie that just felt cheap and direct to DVD... which I think it is...  Whats up with Rourkes accent in this one?  Is he french?  Itallian?  Metis?  Nope, he's just kinda crap along with the rest of them.

Crossing Over

Who knew Ford made a film after Indiana Jones and the Crystal Shits? Not me. Pretty forgettable film that plays like a CRASH clone, the boring Crash, not the cool Cronenberg one.  One of the stars is for the hot blonde showing lots of boobage.

The Last House on the Left

Not bad remake of the grimy original. They mostly do a good job as far as keeping things nasty, but I missed the completely misguided social commentary of the original.  Typically I want more nudity in my horror then this one offers, but considering the rape-o plot, I'm ok with minimal boobage on display.

This Is the Army

Speaking of boobs, this one starred Ronald Regan... Oh snap!  Not bad propaganda as a musical. The best bit is, it has a minstrel show part that's pretty good that's followed a couple songs later with a sequence starring boxer Joe Louis and some black dancers that kicks the shit out of every other musical number in it. Too funny.

Russ, everyone's seen District 9 except you, give it a chance dood, I have a feeling you'll like it a lot more than I did. It's like one of those weird Japanese films where the guy slowly agonisingly turns into a machine. [Russ raises eyebrows] Yep it's a sick demented vomit stained film [Russ bites fist]. Hey the Nigerian goverment banned this movie, see Chris's post, yes he may have made that up, ChrisDAC can be a little strange [wink]. Walter enjoyed the film despite the bleak environment. Elizabeth probably wanted her money back. [snort] I'll give it a 2nd chance when I've forgotten all about it and see it in the 3 for £20 HMV sale some time next year.

Lets have a gander at your mini-reviews.. okay... um.. rubbish... rubbish... rubbish and... rubbish. I mean what was the point of remaking Last House on the Left? Tell me? The original was hardly high art and the sequel was... pointless. It made last years The Strangers look like a masterpiece in comparison.

LA Confidential, one of my favourite 90's films, popped thru my letterbox this morning, 2-disc special edition, 3 hours worth of extras and an isolated score, hopefully the picture and sound has been spruced up a bit. £5.99.

Rubbish... RUBBISH!!  HOW DARE YOU!   You Transformers loving, Independence Day fawning, Van Helsing wanking snoot!  What's the point of remaking Last House On The Left?  To watch people being terrorized and killed in imaginative ways of course!  DUH!

This is one of my favourites, so I forgive you for your slander.   I'm already improving my viewing this week by watching the first 20 minutes of The Black Godfather last night...

I'll probably wait for D9 to hit DVD since it well be a solo journey for me to the theater to see it.  It's laughable that Nigeria wants reparations.  That can't be true can it?  Isn't it one of those countries were a 1000 people get killed overnight in a hatchet attack from some fanatical tribe?  Someone sets a movie there and it's a huge slander?  Yup, laughable.

So Russ, how many Elvis Presley films have we got now, shall we tell the world?
