ha ha! Nice picture. I love the old monsters. I'm excited for this Wolfman picture since it's a wolfman instead of those damned wolf looking werewolfs. I don't care if with special effects we can make people turn into realistic wolves... I WANT WOLFMEN DAMN IT!

Oh, I just hit the wrong key and deleted everything I'd written!
Anyhow, I would see The Girlfriend Experience if it came to town. I don't know Sasha Grey, but nothing wrong with porn stars doing "legit" films.
I could never work up an interest in Che. I think the 2 parts had a very short run here.
I watched Jennifer Lynch's Surveillance last night. This one is produced by her Dad, and it has that Lynchian bizarreness running through it, though much milder than some of David's films I've seen (I'm not a fan). A couple of gruesome scenes, but overall, just an oddball bunch of characters doing strange/cruel/horrific things. I must admit I did not figure something out which I should have. The casting was interesting, including Bill Pullman, Julia Ormond, French Stewart, Pell James, Michael Ironside, and Ryan Simpkins as an unforgettably calm, odd and compelling little girl. Despite everything, I think I liked it!

Saw A Perfect Getaway today. It was OK -- the plot doesn't hold together for me, but I enjoyed the performances.

Yeah I saw A Perfect Getaway too, great twist about one hour in which I didn't see coming but I didn't like the film much, and more than one reviewer thought it cheated, maybe it did a little. Lovely Hawaiian scenery though and gorgeous Milla Jovovich was good in a different type of role, those eyes, wow!
The most notorious porn star turned "legit" actress was probably Traci Lords who I last saw in... ahem Zack & Miri make a Porno, but she also appeared as a vampire in Blade and alongside Johnny Depp in Cry Baby. Lords nearly wiped out the US porn industry 20 years ago when they discovered she lied about her age and was appearing in porn movies at just aged 15... those early banned films are sought after collectors items for perverts and deviants the world over.

Sounds like a good flick. I live for violent and gross. They are great popcorn movies! Saw Transformers 2...it sucked. How a movie can have so much action, yet be so damn boring, is beyond me.

As far as male porn stars, Rocco Siffredi was in the artsy "Romance", but he basically was cast to do what he always does.
I saw The Time Traveler's Wife today. I had not read the novel, and while the story felt disjointed at times, I rather liked it. It was also more humorous than I expected, including a nice supporting role by Ron Livingston.

I refuse.... REFUSE!!! REFUSE to believe that A PERFECT GETAWAY is a blah movie. Mila would never make a blah movie!! Plus, it has Steve Zahn and he's always good.
I forgot about Rocco in that movie. The only porn star to make it in the main stream is Ron Jeremy! The mans a legend. I think he's made about 2000000000 pornos, and about 5 legit films (if you can count Trauma Studio legit....) so I guess all those women who get into porn as a way to get a legit job have a few films to get under their belts (thongs.... g-strings.... :P)

“You cannot blame porn. When I was young, I used to masturbate to Gilligan's Island.”
Aah the legend that is Ron Jeremy.
And you girls love tv cartoons right? Not Disney cartoons, tv cartoons. The last few lines in my GI Joe review were actually aimed at you two. Hey come on Michael Reuben, our fussy Indie cinema loving moderator confessed to enjoying Transformers 2 over in Movies area, so I'm not completely bonkers.
Hmmm I want to see this one. I heard the time traveller randomly hops around in time when he least expects it. Fascinating.

I had the pleasure of seeing Inglourious Basterds this weekend. Another winner from Quentin Tarantino. It is a little early for me to rank it against his other works, but as Aldo says "This just might be my masterpiece." It may prove to be my favorite QT film of all time; it certainly is in the running.
All of the flourishs that one expects in a Tarantino film are present - inspired dialogue, interesting characters, great use of music, unconventional storytelling mechanisms, and at least one closeup shot of a beautiful woman's foot.
There is a shot (a very deliberate shot) of Melanie Laurent that will probably rank as one of my favorite cinematic images of all time in this film. For myself, certain iconic images come to mind when I remember films, such as Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor's first kiss in A Place In the Sun, or the image of Kong breaking through the gates in the original King Kong. I suspect that the shot of Laurent I described will be the lasting image of Inglourious Basterds, for me.

Kseniya Simonova is a Ukrainian artist who just won Ukraine's version of "America's Got Talent." She uses a giant light box, dramatic music, imagination and "sand painting" skills to interpret Germany's invasion and occupation of Ukraine during WWII.

Wow, that's pretty amazing and unusual, talented girl and she's not bad looking either.
Ooh looks like Walter has already picked his film of the year and we still have 4 months to go.
Well Inglarias Bastardos is definitely on my to see list. My favourite QT film is still Pulp Fiction I would say, I love that screenplay. I think Russell mentioned Kill Bill was his favourite.
But you didn't describe it Walt, what does she do that left such a lasting image on you? Is it a spoiler, would we know it when we see it?

Steve - the composition of the shot along with Laurent's pose and expression make the shot special.
The shot I am referring to is simply a shot of Laurent leaning against a wall staring out a window in a flowing red dress. The combination of Laurent, her reflection, and the background makes for a very striking image. I was just taken by the elements of the shot, and the care that went into the composition. Just a beautiful, gorgeous image, in a film filled with craftsmanship.
Best film of the year? Maybe. But Scorsese's Shutter Island looks great in the trailers.

Nice vid Parker, I love that type of animation. I remember an old VHS tape available from some museum about the early days of animation that as clips of vaudville acts that would do a similar thing with chalk boards and dough.
Steef is right, KILL BILL is my favorite Tarantio film. I find it impossibly romantic and the end makes me cry everytime. I'm off to INGLOUOURIOUSUS BAZTURDS tonight, so I'll report on that one. I'm yet to hear a bad word about it, so I hope I don't have high expectations.

Looking forward to your review, lets see if you like it as much as Walter did, and look out for that shot of Laurent he mentioned. I did read that Tarantino messes about with history a bit in this film, something to do with der Fuehrer? [salutes] And one of of my favourite David Bowie songs features on the soundtrack "Shoshanna's moment of revelation arrives to the tune of Bowies "Putting out Fire" and the anachronism is exultant".. I'll probably see it next week.

Yep Scorsese's new film looks really good and creepy, unfortunately the release has been postponed until Feb next year, baasterds! [bites knee]

Re: Shutter Island delay. A shame to hear that it was delayed..
Bowie's Cat People song ( I love it also, Steve) is integrated into Basterds in a wonderful manner. As always, Tarantino is in command of the music that populates his work.

I did it! I finally saw the new Tarantino! I realize though, I've been lax in in my round ups! So here's the catch up! I'm sure you're all going to be enthralled! (Bored?) :P
I wanted this one to be great, but it's trying to damned hard to be SHAWN OF THE DEAD.
I don't know what it is with these UNDERWORLD movies, but I forget them pretty much as soon as I see them. This one was no different, other then I remember it making no sense at all compared to the faded memories of the first 2.
I don't know how to rate Will Ferrell movies anymore. They're all pretty much the same. This one is as stupid and retarded as any of his other sports comedies. So if you like those, you'll like this. Nuff said.
I don't know, it had some cool fight scenes and style, but in the end it failed to make my nuts buzz. I'm sick of CGI blood frankly, it rarely ever looks good in a movie.
Like most Tarantino films, this was nothing that I expected. Which is not a complaint. Deadly good, it plays more like a caper film then the WW2 epic I expected. Deadly good, it plays more like a caper film then the WW2 epic I expected. It's as if Sergio Leone and Alfred Hitchcock had a love child and he got into the movie making business. I have to give it a second watch to get my head fully around it. I suspect this has way more to do with what's happening now in the world then WW2 politics.
Right! The Basterds! First off, the trailers mostly sucked. There's some new one coming out whose name escapes me with Gerald Butler being all pissed off and killy with Jamie Fox that looked ok. The other one that pricked up my eyes (?) was Disney's A CHRISTMAS CAROL. It's a big CGI thing done by Robert Zemickis, and looks like the first one to not look like dead people wandering around. I'm sure Steve will cream his pants over it... my only problem with the film is, do we need another version of Scrooge?
Post trailers is always the cue to fuck about texting on your black berry cell phone. The guy in front of me had some model that I'm sure could illuminate the dark side of the moon from the bottom of the Grand Canyon. I found that by kicking the seat, and replying to his inguery of "What's your problem" with a loudly stated "How do you not know that your not supposed to use your cell phone in a theater?" actually worked in getting them shut off! So I was able to enjoy the film without the now common cell phone light show! Yay me for being a dick! :D
What was I talking about? Oh right! The movie! I loved it. I totally can see why people arestating they want to see it again. After the KILL BILLS and DEATH PROOF, I was waiting for the giant action wham bam that never happened. Which is not a complaint. This is more of a JACKIE BROWN type of film to me, quiet, delibritly paced. I was completely enthralled by the entire thing and the running time just flew by. Tarantino can add "Master Of Suspense" to his resume. The film got me so wound up, when the ending came about I was about ready to cheer I got so damned caught up in it. The other neat thing is, the Basterds themselves are almost secondary to the film, and kinda scary as opposed to "Oh cool!" Tons of nice touches, the opening plays like Leone with a classic John Ford signiture shot that well be instantly recognizable to most (hopefully).
And Walter's right about that shot, I see it being a Christou Sig shot in the future. :P There's some blade violence (scalping), but not a lot of it so I think Liz should still check it out.
So yeah, I loved Basterds, and can honestly say Tarantino is yet to make a film that I can't watch over and over again. Did I like it as much as KILL BILL? Not yet, I need to watch it again. Basterds nearly made me cry, but Kill Bill always makes me teary eyed so it still wins.
Keep your eye's and ears out for Tarantino and Harvey Keitel cameos....
3/5

Wow epic review there Russ, you really are a passionate fan eh. You should post that in the review thread keeping in the testy names just to confuse people.
The critics have generally been enthusiastic about IB, it's got 88% at Rotten Tomatoes with one critic saying - "Inglourious Basterds is sprawling, flawed and hugely self-indulgent. It's also hugely enjoyable" with another stating - "His latest is too long, too talkative and a touch too self-indulgent. But it's a heck of a lot better than anything he's done since Pulp Fiction." ooh I gotta see it.
I liked Lycans, in fact I enjoyed all three Underworld films, love the look.
I still haven't seen Lesbian Vampire Killers, but did see Blood the Last Vampire which was alright but nothing special.

This is the problem with hollywood! It's too god damned lazy! Stuff like superhero movie are just run on random jokes like a string of SNL skits. That's why they don't work. Same with Dreamworks cartoons. They just do a run of pop culture reference jokes and it's out of date withen a year. With Young Frankenstein, if you never seen a Frankenstein or universal horror movie in your life, you can still find it hilarious because the story is so solid. If you have seen Frankenstein, then the movie is even better since you get the spoof. Same with Blazing Saddles. It's sad man.
Speaking of sad, I saw a second movie in the hteaters last weekend! That's two trips to the theater in one week! I'm working at Elizabeth levels! :P
1.5/5
I've never been more dissapointed with a horror film I don't think. I really liked the first one that Zombie did, and this one is so off the mark. Sad man. It felt 3 times longer then Inglourious Basterds. I saw a trailer for THE WOLFMAN though, holy shit does it look good!
Speaking of Basterds, Liz, it has knife work in the scalping, way worth seeing despite this! Just cover your eyes a bit. :)

Ah sheet well I'm not surprised, sequels rarely work as well as the original and this was a sequel to a remake for chrissakes! Did John Carpenter's Halloween need re-inventing? No it didn't. Like you said in your last post Russ, Hollywood is too damned lazy!
Totally in agreement here Russ.
Btw I was trapped in the quote box after I edited it, I've seen others complain about this phenomenon and now its happened to me. I went back quoted Russ post again and was trapped inside again, I couldn't type anything outside the quote box. Blast. I'm surprised this new forum software hasn't self-destructed so far. I think I know the trick though, after quoting someones post hit your mouse pointer outside the box at least once before you edit the quote, than hopefully things will be ok, damn!

Russ, there was a lengthy interview with Terry Gilliam in Total Film mag, they asked him what he thought of Zack Snyder's Watchmen, which he was to direct at one time -
TG - Visually, it was really fantastic. He got it. And Rorschach was absolutely spot on. But it was too reverential to the book. He was trying so hard, I just thought someone needs to kick this thing in the ass.
TF - Do you think you could have done a better job?
TG - When me and Charles McKeown wrote the script we had to sacrifice so much that I was almost glad we didn't do it. It's a tough one. But it also suffers from The Incredibles, which basically stole the whole premise. And the Incredibles was much better! I thought "you guys are outrageous!" They just stole Watchmen and they made it into a very enjoyable thing.
TF - Would you like to do an animated film?
TG - Well at the premiere of Wall-E, which I thought was a work of genius, I said to the director "remember me, I may need a job in a few years! I'd love to come and work at Pixar."
TF - Which modern directors do you like?
TG - Guillermo and Peter Jackson together with The Hobbit is going to be extraordinary. They are really intelligent guys who really understand fantasy and aren't afraid of the darkness. They get it deep down. Look at the stuff James Cameron's doing, I've seen some of Avatar. It looks fantastic. And so it should for $300m!
TF - Do you think 3-D is the future of cinema?
TG - There's one problem with 3-D. Because you're wearing dark glasses, you won't get the whites. You're just getting the browny-grey of the glass, so it flattens it. In regular film, you've got a range from pure, brilliant white to almost complete black. The next stage of 3-D has to be a system where you can do it well without dark glasses.

neat interview. Hearing that, I'm pretty glad Gilliam didn't do WATCHMEN. Is he saying it would of been like THE INCREDIBLES? Don't get me wrong, I liked the Incredibles, but not as a WATCHMEN movie. :S

Yep it looks like Terry Gilliams Watchmen would have been a lot different to the comic, which really would have pissed off the purists. I have a feeling Dr. Manhattan would have been out of the picture just to make it more workable, so I'm glad Snyder got a crack at it, better to be reverential than make up your own simplified version of a famous comic. Still, I'm interested in seeing Gilliams new film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, what a title eh? The late Heath Ledger's last movie. Poor Gilliam has always had problems making his films, production difficulties, money running out and now the star dying during filming. So unlucky.

Russ, your watching all your horror stuff to soon. Dont you want to save it for the Horror Fest thing?
I love Underworld 3, but hated 2.
The anime of Blood: the Last Vampire was pretty good. But i hear the US disc is edited. At least thats what a friend told me. I have no interest in the live action/ CGI version.
Got Blazing Saddles on Blu-ray for about $10. Cant beat that!
And i am looking at The Fog on Blu from Amazon.uk, also for about $10. After shipping it would be $17. Not a bad price for an import Blu. But i need to make sure its region free.

"The Fog" UK appears to be region-free. (Only thing screwy with that whole region-free thing with the PS3 -- updates seem to have messed with its ability to get past PAL menus or the like on certain region-free discs. I'm about 2 updates behind because I don't have the PS3 always hooked to the internet and in some cases, updates seem good for nothing. I do also have my region-free Momitsu, though.)
I watched "He's Not That Into You" on Blu-Ray last night. It was OK, though it really feeds into a stereotype I don't like. Out of the whole cast, Jennifer Connelly felt a bit out of place -- I'm not used to seeing her in this type of movie! I also saw "Blood & Chocolate", which was kind of a lame werewolf story. I love how they have to be running and take a diving position in order to change into a wolf.
