I too belong to the faction of those who think that Indiana Jones IV could appear to be exciting.

Here's a question: Do the DVD releases of the Gojira movies break out Toho's Perspectasound audio mixes into the proper Left,Center,Right channel structure? It's supposed to be a steering and a gain control, so it gets you about as far toward stereo as Dolby Pro-Logic gets you toward discrete surround sound.

I assume you are refering to the 60's & 70's releases that CTHE has released in the past few years under the 50th anniversary banner, if so then the answer is no. The Japanese & English dubs are mono.

Dang. I actually know a guy, an HTF member in fact, who has a Perspecta decoder. It's mono but there are tones buried in the soundtrack which control the gain with which it appears in the 3 channels; used on VistaVision films in the US, and extensively by Toho.
I almost bought the import Gojira tai Baragon LD a couple of months back.
I don't know about the older releases but the most recent Millenium Series has Dolby Digital 5.1

Here's an interesting scenario. Gojira is coming to a largely populated city but there's no military after him. Why? He crouches down and puts on a construction helmet all the while a foreman for demolitions talks into a megaphone instructing Gojira which buildings need to be demolished. I wonder how he'd get paid though.
You know, there was actually an anime — Nanaki Kio Neoranga, and I think it's available on DVD in the US — which took the Mothra scenario and ran with it. I haven't seen the whole thing, but it was made in short [5 — 15 minute] episodes for Japanese TV, and follows the lives of two or three South Seas princesses, living and going to school in Japan, whose ancestral protector god shows up in Tokyo one day, in the form of a 50-foot-tall monster which, you guessed it, tromps around the streets and trashes things because it can't get the hang of city life. They have to take it for walks, keep it from playing in traffic, &c…

From the old classic Godzilla's I've always liked Monster Zero aka Invasion of the Astro Monsters the most. I like the very colorful 60's sci-fi aspects of it, duplicitous evil aliens, mysterious planets and less monster mayhem than usual. The first Gojira 1954 is the least silly and 'arguably' the best of the series, but I've enjoyed and watched Monster Zero more.

Roland Emmerich's 1998 Godzilla makes an appearance in Godzilla Final Wars:

Hey where'd everyone go? The Big G confused and alone after a particularly destructive Monster-bash.

Here's some exciting news Joe, a special edition of the '98 Godzilla is out soon, long overdue eh?

I still have Tokyo S.O.S. and Final Wars from the Gojira Millenium Series to watch. And I'm glad that "GINO" gets his ass severely whompted by the true Gojira.
I'm a huge fan of Jean Reno but I'm sticking to my ratio for every 4 1980's films on DVD 1 is free to buy from another decade. I think that's a good system meself.
By the way, I'm finding myself extremely reluctant to rent the 1989 sequel THE FLY II. Maybe it's because I have high regards to the Cronenberg film and wary about the sequel in terms of it's quality? I dunno. Any comments would definitely help for my "predicament."
I'm pondering about purchasing for my next immediate 1980's film purchases are: (I'll just list seven for now.)

BATMAN - Two-Disc Special Edition
Conan the Barbarian - Collector's Edition
The Goonies
Heart of Dragon - FOX/ Fortune Star
Highlander - Immortal Edition
PREDATOR - Collector's Edition
RoboCop - (Part of the RoboCop Trilogy.)

What is this world coming to I ask you? There are times I wish some damn asteroid does hit us, wipes out mankind before we can pollute and contaminate the rest of the galaxy with our hate.
The ultimate question: Is mankind inherently evil?

Um and now back to the happy world of movies.

The '98 Godzilla doesn't share a scene with the 'true' Gojira in Final Wars Ray, wishful thinking on Joe's part. Btw, the 'true' Gojira was killed off in the first film back in '54.

I liked the '98 Roland Emmerich Godzilla, so did Sandra, she sees it as a variation on the Jurassic Park series which she enjoyed, but somehow I can't imagine her sitting thru Godzilla Final Wars, I mean she makes fun of me for watching Star Wars, never mind Final Wars.

Ray, thanks for reminding me I'd forgotten about The Fly II special edition. I picked up the first last year, great film, Cronenberg's best IMO. The sequel was okay, not in the same league as The Fly, but I liked some of the setpieces, especially a spectacularly gruesome death by descending elevator.

I rewatched the 98 Godzilla back in January and have to say it has grown on me in recent years. I don't display the hate & venom for it when it 1st came out. It is one of those lets grab some popcorn and have some fun flicks. Yes the acting is bad & the CGI a little outdated, but they blow shit up and you cant argue with that. Plus being a NJ Devils fan in hockey I get a bit of pleasure watching Madison Square Garden where the NY Rangers play get blown up.

Gotta go. Off to work.

Have a nice day all & play nice.

No comments about my Godzilla watching either or my sequel list?
I've noticed something about the Godzilla movies from browsing through those huge "Films I've watched" threads (yes someone actually reads those). Godzilla, although usually given only 1 or 2 stars, is frequently the only 1 or 2 star movie to have been repeatedly watched. You dont have to have 5 stars to be enjoyable.

P.S. Zen, I forgot to mention that the dialogue and narration in the books sometimes even reminds me of the way you post, so I *definitely* recommend that you read them!

Haggai, I'm looking forward to it. You know modern internet blogging, to me, is similiar to a film-noir voice-over. I do keep an online blog(somewhere in cyberspace). So, when I come here to HTF it's hard to break away from that style. Blogging is a bit self-centered; which most of my posting here ends up being. I'm very aware of it. The fragmentation, obscure references and in-jokes. Oh, and the Doritos.

You guys are posting too fast on the weekends. Watch a flippin' movie from time to time. JEEZ!

Steve, Sin City? Did you like this?
Actually, Zen, I think I mis-stated the order of the books very slightly, with two of them swapped. I went back and edited that post, which should have them in the right order now. The last two Sin City books both refer to characters and events that took place in some of the short stories.

There's more dialogue and narration in the books than they could work into the movie, understandably, since some of that stuff would seem like too much of a non-sequitir when you have to keep the story moving on-screen. But there are little hilarious things sprinkled throughout them that you'd love, Zen. One of them is Dwight's explanation of what those dinosaurs are doing there at the tar pits.
I'm not being rude but I think I may be a bit behind with some of the Testy cast. Ray is a list maker I take it? Are we supposeed to just gaze at the splendor of this massive lists? Do we participate? I'm really out of the loop on this...That sequel list above...I so could add to that. Ray, I love lists, Top 10's, Top 50's, grocery lists, daily priority list, Schindler's List...........hehehe, yeah Jack, it's like freezing here, it's 8:30a.m right now and it's a shivering 67 degrees

Haggai, or anyone. I'm really confused at the ending and the beginning. What was Hartnet's character exactly? What was going to happen to Alexis Bledell? And what did he (Hartnet) mean in the beginning about Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Haggai can answer that better me Zen, I'm not as big a fan of Sin City as you guys, I've only watched it twice. I appreciate the skill and technique involved, but storywise eee, and the endless voice over narration started to grate after a while.

Can anyone see any images on this page apart from our signature screenshots? I can see the shots I posted on the previous page but not on this page, just blank, weird.

V for Vendetta is out soon, you guys interested in that?

Zen, here are some spoilerized-when-necessary thoughts on your Sin City questions. Regarding the opening scene with Hartnett, it's a direct adaptation of a Miller short story, "The Customer is Always Right." The story is only two or three pages long, and what happens in the movie is exactly what happens in the story; there isn't any more explanation in the comic than there is in the movie. The implication of Hartnett's line that you mentioned is simply that she paid him to do what he did, although the reason for that isn't explained. On the SE DVD commentary with Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez, Miller says that the actress, Marley Shelton, asked him what the backstory was with her character. He explained to her that:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
She had been involved with some high-level mafioso guy, but without knowing that he was a criminal. Once she found out about that, she broke up with him, and he swore terrible revenge on her: she would be killed in some awful way, but at a time and manner of his choosing, which he would not reveal to her. Despairing of any way out of the situation, she paid Hartnett's character, a hired killer, to send her out in a way that she could control, and even enjoy in some bittersweet way.

Considering what happens in that first scene of the movie, the implication of his return at the end of the movie is:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Somebody hired Hartnett's character to kill Becky, which will presumably happen just after the movie ends. It might have been Dwight who hired him, or perhaps the mobsters felt that they couldn't trust her and wanted to get rid of her.

It appears it looks like I'll need to build a custom speaker to fully enable my 6.1 receiver. Currently I'm 5.0 on a 6.1 sound system and let me tell ya I miss having my sub-woofer hooked up. Can't hook up my current sub to the new-ish receiver since it came in my home theater in a box back in 2000. Pondering about modding it and installing an amplifier and the jack port for both a power output and the actual sub-type RCA port plug-in. Now, my housemate's Dad knows how to do all this since it's one of his hobbies but he can't find the appropriate amplifier for our project. I'm also posting this in the ***Official MERGED "Should I get 6.1 (or 7.1) - Is it worth it?" Thread*** thingy but I figure since you're my fellow droogs I'd give it a shot in here. I have the appropriate diagrams and such for 6.1 speaker set-up it's the actual remaining items I need to take care of I'm perplexed about. Oh, and I have a SONY STR-DE598. Connected from the DVD player to the receiver is digital coaxial cable.
How big are your 5.0 speakers? If they're not doing the job of reproducing low bass frequencies, you can bi-wire them into the front main channels with an approprite crossover. This works best with matched sets of speakers, though — my father has a Cambridge Soundworks 2.1 sub/sat system which does this [and the matching center and surrounds waiting in the box for him to get a surround receiver].
Welcome to page 455!
Christopher, would you like for me to input all the information such as the ohms, impedence, wattage and all the other things? I was figuring to build the rear surround speaker the same type hoo hah mumbo jumbo as the others but feedback would be most appreciated. The manual is almost a noodle scratcher in terms of the technical jargon but I guess I'm slowly getting the hang of it.
Compared to my old receiver and my "new" (it's several months old but hey) the new one kicks the old one's ass in terms of quality. The old one was made late 1998 and the new one last year. I watched a large portion of my DVD's with DTS audio tracks on them and it was like music to my ears. Watched Jurassic Park III in DTS and it practically sounded like the theater I went to go see it at back when it came out. I enjoy having the option of both Dolby Digital and DTS but for the sake of quality for the picture or original production audio I stick to those or something. For example, I'd rather watch JAWS in its original Mono than the DTS track because DTS didn't exist back in 1975. It's nice to have but unless they're using the original audio stems then what's the point? Even the recently purchased The Money Pit had a DTS track but it sounded muddy and when I put it on the original 2.0 Dolby Surround it sounded a bit better or something which would better describe it but for the life of me I don't know an accurate term.. Is it that they remux the original audio to make pseudo-DTS tracks? It'd be nice to learn about since I heartily enjoy learning things.

Is anyone else here a fan of the film Dreamscape? I watched it alot when I was younger but now as an adult I relook upon the film as actually having a damn excellent story and elaborate plot. This time I'm definitely keeping it. Hell, even the commentary was enjoyable and one of the speakers said they wished both Dennis Quaid and Kate Capshaw were with them. I fully agree with their sentiment.

Speaking of commentaries, there have been quite a few of which I've listened to which are downright entertaining. Such as the cast commentary with Arnold Vosloo, Oded Fehr and Kevin J. O'Connor on THE MUMMY: Ultimate Edition. I could tell they had alot of fun making the film and their friendship. Sort of made me wish Brendan Fraser would've been able to join the guys instead of him just having his own commentary. He just seemed sort of lonely compared to the other commentary. Some other fun ones I've listened to are Armageddon: The Criterion Collection; The Thing (both releases have the same commentary.); Total Recall; Big Trouble in Little China: Special Edition and a couple others.

Here's a greet treet for me droogies, the cover of the latest issue of Vanity Fair featuring Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson in some artfully nude posing, nice of the young ladies innit? A bit on the pale side though, the girls too busy working to get a tan?

Ray, if you like commentaries, and lists you might want to check out: ratethatcommentary.com

There have been a few interesting threads on HTF on both good and bad commentaries as well that might be worth checking out, and possibly resurrecting some with your personal recommendations:

I see Nils has deciphered Ray's ramblings [cue gasps and a smatter of clapping], I was about to hire an expert on hieroglyphics, the same guy who translates Zenspeak. Sorry, it's um... what day is it? Wednesday! That's it, it's Wednesday, that's my excuse and I'm standing by it.

Commentaries? I love em! Bring em on! Over here in Pally Land the commentaries are subtitled on dvds, so I can watch the movie with the sound full on and just read commentary when I want to, and no danger of nodding off to a droning yak-track. But I always make sure I 'listen' to the commentary if it's the cast, or a well known director, or a favorite film.
Steve, I just saw this photo-shopped version on another site; has Nils been at work on it?

The dog in the bottom left corner is pretty funny, not just Columbo.
I also wondered who the guy in the actual (non-Columbo ) magazine cover was...kind of looks like Jeremy Piven, but why would they put HIM on that cover? And now this IMDB item says it's the issue's artistic designer, Tom Ford, but also that it was supposed to be...Rachel McAdams! But, she backed out at the last minute, didn't want to bare that much on a big magazine cover. Too bad for the rest of us, she's smokin' hot.
