Austin Movie Nights! - Page 9

Nils, I opted for the blind date with the blonde, on a gut feeling - it was the correct decision

Jonathan, I agree on the dumbing-down aspect. Bond films have always had differing degrees of unbelievable human and gadget performance, but DAD had just too much defiance of physics. Also, I'm in a quandry as to whether Halle is just a bad actress or if she's mediocre and her lines were bad. Also, Bond is careful to choose women who are careful. It helps that he wears a special "Q"-developed item that Q foresaw Bond needing: a permanent condom.

For Friday night, how about this: Alamo Drafthouse. From the newsletter:
"Udo Kier live in person! We still can't believe it's happening, but it really is true! The grand legend of cult cinema will be live in person at the Alamo, Friday, December 6 and Saturday, December 7. Friday, we feature "Flesh For Frankenstein" in 3-D, and Saturday, "Blood For Dracula". Before each show, Udo will also do a live DVD-style commentary over top of scenes from all his strangest films. This one element makes this particular celebrity appearance like no other we have ever done. In addition to the commentary, Udo will conduct a Q&A before each screening."

Whaddya say we make this an Austin HT movie night?
I know it's asking for a miracle to ask this group to respond and ACT quickly, but the tickets are going fast, so how about a decision? I have my ticket request in.

I was totally disappointed in Halle Berry's character. We were discussing that after the film, I thought they should have written her character as a female version of James Bond, with the same level of sophistication, cool, wit, and smarts. I wouldn't even mind seeing her get him out of a bind. Instead we got a golly gee wiz girl next door Ema Peel wanna be. Lame. She's one of the most beautiful women on the planet, and I've seen her act in other movies, so I blame this one on the writing and directing.
What has physical beauty got to do with acting ability? Some of the ugliest guys are the best actors. Oh, I forgot, this is America and its materialistic society. For a moment there, I was thinking serious. Hand me a beer...
Beauty has nothing to do with acting ability, it does have something to do with Bond movies. The very concept of a "Bond Girl" (yes, I know it's a sexist term) requires physical beauty be a substantial part of the character. I was not suggesting that a woman must be beautiful to be a good actress, I was suggesting that in order to be a good "Bond Girl" the character (not the actress) has to have a certain essence of Bond; an element I found lacking in Jinx. So Halle Berry has everything needed to be a great "Bond Girl", beauty and acting ability, but the script and direction kept her from being one.

Down boy! More of my dry humor missed...sigh. I should have included a smiley. Jonathan, I agree with you on everything except that I have to be shown that she is a good actress, and I haven't seen her in other roles, so I admit that the problem with her and DAD might be 100% attributable to the writing/directing. My opinion is that is was 70% writing, 10% directing and it "appeared" to me that it was 20% bad acting. Oh well, what bothered me most was too much physical impossibility stuff.

Hey, can we get back to Friday night? I have two tickets reserved. Who wants to step up and stay out late?
I think I need to invent a new emoticon that means, "humor understood, ignoring it anyway so I can debate my point for the fun of it."
Good idea, and I got your drift.

NOW, how about Friday night at the Alamo Drafthouse for 3-D horror movie and live appearance? I told Nils that the only 3-D I've seen was the old green/red lens crap. He says I'm in for a treat with the polarized glasses type 3-D. Anyone else experienced it?
I will be hosting a screening of "Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring" (extended director's cut) on Sunday, December 15, starting around 6:00PM. Please send me private E-mail if you need directions to my place.

My HT has gone through several improvements lately, including the completion of the Plas-Tex screen, additional seating, and a new DVD player. Scott Oliver may be bringing his Theta Casanova processor over for me to audition (my next possible upgrade???).
I can't believe the lack of interest in Friday night at the Alamo Drafthouse! Real 3-D horror flick AND Udo Kier in person to comment on his flicks and answer questions. This is a RARE opportunity.

Anyone?...
Sounds like a hoot! Alas...I will be working possibly the last of some overtime amassing funds for a Christmas trip to New York to visit my wife's folks.
But if it were cancelled......
I just returned to a friend o mine, his 3D steup with shutter glasses and three 3D dvd's. The 3D effect was pretty cool, but limited in some ways. You can see a demonstration of this in the dvd section of FRY's Austin...If you can get a salesperson to turn it on for you.
Hank, how much gore is going to be involved in this X-rated movie? I'm totally game for freakishly weird, but disgustingly gorey doesn't do it for me.
Jonathan, I've never seen the movie, but the experience will be rare - think about it, a cult legend doing some live "commentary" over some "clips". Nils told me the 3-D will be via real polarized glasses, not the green and red crap from way back. I just thought it's so different a movie experience, that a bunch of HT/movie enthusiasts would jump on it, but it appears I was wrong.
As for gore - its' only a movie and a horror movie at that, which is automatically so fake as to not be taken seriously.
I tell you, Saving Private Ryan bothered me quite a bit and I haven't wanted to watch it since our meet at my house. Now THAT was gore that was too real. My two cents.
I cannot make the December 15th meet as I already have a prior engagement that I cannot get out of. I hope to make it to the next one though as I am anxious to see Colin's new screen.
My last final is the 14th, so the 15th works great for me!

BTW Hank, I got my Canare RCA connectors from Markertek. Any chance we could crimp them on my dog-eaten video cable at the meet?

Also, image processing geeks may be interested in my latest masterpiece..... www.hayenga.com/mark/termpaper.doc. Scroll towards the end for the eye candy.

I forgot that Linda and I had committed to attending a party on the 15th and so unfortunately I will not be able to attend Colin's opening night showing of LOTR:EV.

BTW Colin, have you given any thought to naming your HT?

- BOND MOVIE NIGHT -

OK, we have been talking about this for too long, but no one has taken any action on this? Bodo made a suggestion a couple weeks ago for a night of simply watching the opening sequence from each of the 007 movies (I think the only Bond movie no one in this group appears to have on DVD is "On Her Majesty's Secret Service"?).

I spoke with Bodo yesterday and he is still interested in such a night. I also spoke with Hank and he too is excited about such an evening. I believe Colin (the man with the largest Bond collection in our group) definetly sounded interested, and I would suspect that Jonathon would be considering his affection for the series.

So how about it folks? I am willing to offer up the Luehrmann Miniplex for the location but you all need to speak up and set a date!

How about Saturday Dec. 14th?
It's a busy season with Austin Symphonic Band and church orchestra rehearsals and performances. On the 14th I couldn't get to Nils until about 7:45 if you don't mind waiting that long. Nights I can't do are the 15th and 17th.

I'll try to find OHMSS this weekend.

Mark: I won't be at Colins' on the 15th, but you can drop by anytime and we'll get those cables repaired. Give me a call.
I'm in for Bond night! We seem to have a wealth of movie nights suddenly. Colin's got LOTR on the 15th, Nils' Bond night on 14th, and I volunteered to do Solaris as well, so how about the evening of the 20th for that?

What's the deal with no Christmas movies? I'm normally a grinch, but I'll do a screening of The Nightmare Before Christmas if anyone's interested.
Given all the schedule conflicts for the 15th, should I plan on moving the "Lord of the Rings" screening to a different evening? I could do a weeknight screening some time between the 11th and 19th if that would work better for everyone...

Nils -

I haven't really thought about naming my HT yet, but I also haven't yet figured out what the room will look like. Browsing others' HT pictures just gives me a thousand ideas of how I'd like it to look. Money for the project and construction skills elude me though...
Construction skills can be bought for a nominal fee

Colin,

Don't change the date on my account, but if you do, keep in mind that Fri 13th is the opening of the new Star Trek movie, and of course Tuesday the 17th at midnight will be the first official screening of LOTR:TT.

Also the Luehrmann Miniplex will be closed down from the 17th through the Holidays. I'll be in New Orleans until the 24th and then my folks will be in town for the Holidays.
If we go ahead with the "Lord of the Rings" movie night, it'll have to be on Sunday, December 15 or Monday, December 16. Who can make it on which evening? Whichever evening can muster up the most attendance will win...
Nils,

Okay, how about Friday night the 20th for some Christmas Claymation movies ("Santa Clause is Coming to Town", "Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer", "Frosty the Snowman"). I could also offer Jim Carry's: "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", "Scrooged", Tim Allen: "The Santa Clause" or "It's a Wonderful Life".

Actually, we might want to have several Christmas nights and show several of these. I could do the Claymation ones on Friday and someone else could do a couple of the others on the following Saturday.

Just let me know if anyone is interested in coming over to my place on the 20th.

Jonathan,

I finally got around to watching "The Others" last night and man was that a scary movie!

While that sounds great, as I said in my last post:

Which of course means I wont be able to attend the 20th, but I'm sure others will as I got the feeling many were expressing their interest in some Holidayesque films.

Also, seeing as the subject of scary movies is back in the mix, let me add to it my STRONG RECOMMENDATION for David Fincher's "Panic Room"

Linda, Hank, and I watched it for the first time last Friday night and I must say not only is this film great for its story, script, performances, and stellar sound effects, but where it truly shined and in fact stole the show from everything else about this film was its absolutely brilliant and imaginative camera effects. Just when I thought I had seen every trick in the trade regarding camera shots/angles/effects, Fincher yet again blew me away! This is of course the same genius who brought us "Se7en" and "Fight Club", both considered by critics as two of the finest films from the past decade. With the announcement that he will be directing Tom Cruise in "Mission Impossible 3", I think it is fair to assume it will be a tour de force and a feast for the eyes, ears, and mind of the viewers - I can't wait!

Unfortunately, "Panic Room" is only available as a Superbit, and like many Superbit titles, they have forgotten that it is possible to come out with a 2-disc version thus offering up some much deserved special features - such as those for the spectacular 2-disc version of "Fight Club". Oh well, at least it is an excellent reference quality DVD transfer.

Regardless, if you haven't seen "Panic Room" yet, do your eyes, and ears a favor and watch this brilliant film.
A second kudo for "Panic Room". I'd never seen it and it was a treat, and yes, the cinematography was first-rate. Camera use should have garnered some awards - anyone know?

Still looking like this Saturday night the 14th for Bond? I may arrive in a tux or black suit after orchestra performance, but that's appropo for Bond. See you fellow double-o's at Nils'. (I checked a few stores, including Frye's for OHMMS yesterday, but no luck.)
Nils,

I saw that you were going to be gone that day but this is the only time I can host a meet. So plaease don't take that as a slight. I wish you were going to be in town to join us.

I have a major, MAJOR production coming up this Sunday and I will be working every night this week and all day Saturday to get ready for our First Service in our new building On Sunday with the Adult Choir performing their Canata that night. Therefore I cannot do anything this week.

I hope to get back into the swing of things and catch some flicks with the rest of you starting next week (if I survive this week, that is).

I'm cool with either place. Let's just decide who, what, and where.

Someone should really host a Movie Night calendar on their website. Oh wait...

Colin, I'm afraid I'm watching LOTR at another movie night on the 14th, so I'll be out for the 15th showing.
Crap, that means I'm out for Bond Night too. Damn, too many movie nights!

Speaking of Christmas shows....

Does anyone have a copy of the Bloom County special "A Wish For Wings That Work" with Opus and Bill The Cat?

I saw this years ago on TV but I've never since seen it replayed like all the other Christmas specials.

I'd love to get a copy.
