The Duck Soup link leads to the Eye of the Beholder comparison. I'd horse-whip you for that mistake, if only I had a horse....

Is it just me, or does that shot from the superbit Jurassic Park exhibit insane amounts of color saturation?

It's not just you. It looks severely oversaturated to me as well.
There is something wrong with the jurassic park comparison. I have done a comparison too and the colors are the same (and no over saturation on the Superbit Disk). Maybe there was a color scheme activated with the software dvd player that did the superbit screenshots?

I am not yet allowed to post links so I have to do it like this:

members.chello.at/koeberl2/jurassicpark/index.htm

please add the http: (without the www) yourself.

I watched JP SB last night. The colors are nowhere near that 'comic' looking. Skin tones are dead on. I did use a different computer for that comparison than I normally use. In particular the image application was one I don't normally use and was a freebie. That could explain the colors.

Interesting.

I was under the impression that the Kino Keatons used the same transfers as the original Image discs. Obviously not.

Columbia Tri-Star - Region 1 - NTSC "The King of Masks" vs. Mei Ah - Region 0 - NTSC

All I can say is WOW... Columbia REALLY cropped this image... by almost 50% ! Where do they get-off doing this ? What a travesty. I wouldn't even say it resembles the same film. I absolutely adore this movie for so many reasons and once again we have an example where no definitive edition of a great film appears anywhere on DVD. In Columbia's favor, their image is clearer if softer but the colors seems a little washed out. At least they didn't also blunder by using the shorter international version (Original Chinese version runs 101 minutes; international Version runs 91 minutes). Both are adhering to the longer version. Although the Mei Ah subs are burned-in they are not as bad as they have been for other releases of theirs and for a lot of the film, the image quality is relatively acceptable. It has more wear and tear and has had some obvious digital manipulation, but this is the only way you are going to see this film in its intended ratio (unless you read French as there is a DVD edition HERE). The Mei Ah version has a definite greenish tinge to it. I am very disappointed - I expect this inferior quality from Mei Ah, but Columbia Tri-Star had a great reputation for a long while - almost everything anamorphic, but they did the same thing to The Scent of Green Papaya - totally pan and scanned it. I don't have a lot of patience with this production bastardization. It drives me crazy. So many people will see this film in a totally corrupted vision from that of the creator-the director. What a shame.

Image Entertainment (oop) - Region 0 - NTSC "City Lights"vs. Warner - Region 2 - PAL
Warner really cropped this masterpiece... its almost criminal. The Window-boxing (Pillar-boxing) was only around for a short period of time and it should be respected. It is significant.

Future Films (Sweden) Region 2- PAL Color version "Jour de fĂȘte"" vs. Black and White version
- with a Criterion release pending, some may be very interested in this...

Look how much is cropped from the top and bottom...

Image Entertainment

Warner Region 2

Travesty... and to think my Poll HERE with 3000 votes picked the R2 Boxset as the DVD of the year ?!??!

Thanks for the Alien Comparision! Could you do a comparision of The Alien quad with R2 Alien quad ?
Also are you going to do a comparison of Yojimbo or Sanjuro Criterion letterbox with BFI 16:9? That would be cool...

Hey Gary, you mention that there is no cropping
on either version of Alien but looking at the screen
caps, the new R1 is for sure zoomed in and crops
info everywhere, mostly left and right.
Easy to spot in the cap from the freezerios.

Well he is actually right! You can see it on the scene where Kane is walking up, and drinks coffee...I still think the new transfer looks fantastic!

Yeah... there is some minor cropping. It looks to be around 4-5%... much like you would see when anamorphizing a 1.85 -> 1.78 ( of course this is 2.35). I suppose I should at least mention it, although I don't think it outweighs the great picture quality ...
