What's amazing? The captions for the screencaps are wrong - all the Transit caps are at the bottom. It now looks like that release is inferior to the old Sans Frontieres release which of course it isn't.
The Transit release is amazing. Glad I waited for this German release as this does have the original German intertitles. Comes in a nice digipack as well .

I am amazed and impressed by the amount of work Markus of ChiaroScuro has put into this comparison, just as I am equally unimpressed by people like you.

This is not my comparison. The person who has created it has been informed. It will be corrected soon.

Thanks posting the comparison... The digital restoration is even better than I thought.

I'm also glad to find out that the Region 1 disc doesn't differ much. However, the audio on "The Metropolis Case" is presented at 5.0 Dolby Digital. It's not an error, either...all of the music score for the documentary is presented with full 5.0 surround sound.

Two interesting comparisons...

Check out the variety of color in these three DVDs

Artisan- Region 0 - NTSC "The Piano" vs. EiV (UK) - Region 2 - PAL vs. Best Film (Poland) Region 2 - PAL

and you may be curious about the Charade released on the flip side of "The Truth About Charlie" (horrible film btw)...

Criterion - Region 1 - NTSC "Charade" vs. Universal - Region 1 - NTSC

These are two more examples of non-anamorphic but better source material beating out anamorphic!

Wow. I figured I'd eventually pick up The Truth About Charlie for the anamorphic Charade transfer. Nevermind!

Wow. The piano comparisons were amazing. The non-anamorphic (grrrr) Artisan version looks (color and contrast wise) very much like the film print in the theater...
Too bad Universal doesn't care about Charade as they have an opportunity to outdo Criterion if they wanted to. Obviously they don't want to.

Oh well, at least I won't have to soil my collection with some cheesy remake.
Thanks Universal! Now I know which version to get on DVD. I know where a copy is at nearby at a Best Buy of the Criterion edition.

I think it's funny how Universal does anamorphic only to get the color timing wrong, framing wrong, and take off 2 MBS from the avg. bitrate.
I thought the reason Criterion's DVD went OOP is because Criterion licensed their high-quality transfer from Universal. So how is it that the Criterion goes OOP, and Universal releases the DVD with a transfer that is obviously inferior? Does this make any sense?
Darn you. I went to the website, saw the differences between Region 1 and 2 of Dead Poets Society, saw there is an hour of extras and an audio commentary in the region 2 version that's not in the region 1 I have, and I'm now $20 US lighter.

Sigh.

UPDATED: Sanctuary Region 0 PAL vs. Criterion - Region 1 - NTSC "Charade" vs. Universal - Region 1 - NTSC

The Update addition of the Sanctuary PAL does not quite equal the Criterion, but shows how bad the color in the Universal really is...

Image Entertainment - Region 1 - NTSC "The Trial" vs. Focus Films - Region 1 - NTSC

Yeah right Focus Films... restoration ... sure... whatever.

Fox / Lorber - Region 0 - NTSC "Summer (Le Rayon Vert)" vs. Manga Region 2 - PAL

Complete comparison HERE

What a joke. Here we have a Golden Lion WINNING Film less than 20 years old and this is what we get. Admittedly this is a favorite film of mine and as I was so disgusted with the atrocious state of the Fox/Lorber DVD that I purchased the only other version available, even though it did not have English subs! I know the film so well, I was sure my pigeon French could get me through. I just wanted to see this film in a superior image... that's all!... I know there is a restored print out there. I have even scanned it and put it on my Rohmer website. It HERE (thanks Nick Wrigley). I realize that Gaumont R2- France are coming out with many Rohmer films in May 2003, and they better be a big improvement on the mess you see below.

Okay, tirade over. I'm sure the source print for this must be pretty darn bad and I am aware it is 16mm... but it cannot be as bad as below This isn't some up-and-comer film maker... this is internationally acclaimed director Eric Rohmer.

The Spanish Manga version allows you to learn French without the annoying F/L burned in English subs. That is my only positive comment about all this. Ohhh... and the Manga Menus are animated. The Extras on both discs are non-existent. The picture quality equally sucks on both versions. The sound is like a cereal commercial (Snap, Crackle, Pop). Don't buy either ... wait for the Gaumont R2-France. I will review it and compare as soon as I can get my hands on them.

Three More....

Guang Dong Face Video (Chinese Single Disc version) - Region 0 - NTSC "Hero" vs. EDCO Video Ltd. (Hong Kong 2 Disc version) - Region 3 - NTSC

It doesn't show as well in the reduced captures below as it does in their native resolutions, but the EDCO Video Ltd. disc image quality is superior. It is slightly brighter than the Gung Dong DVD, but I think the contrast on the Region 0 Chinese may be very slightly better. It is really kind of '6 of one/ half dozen of the other', BUT the big difference aside form the second disc of non-subtitled extras on the Hong Kong disc is the opening and closing screens which detail important information to the story, essentially tying the whole film together. In the Chinese release they are not subtitled!. This is a big mistake. They are translated (Eng sub-titled) in the EDCO Video Ltd. release and even if we throw everything else out the window, that alone should clinch it for the EDCO Video Ltd. being the one to purchase.

Fox Lorber - Region 0 - NTSC "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" vs. Tartan Video - Region 2 - PAL
Fox Lorber

Tartan Video

BOTH OF THESE VERSIONS ARE CROPPED ! Buy the French R2 anamorphic !

Medusa (Italy) Region 2 - PAL "La Dolce Vita" vs. Universum Film (German) Region 2 - PAL

The comparisons between Army of Darkness are sick. I might have to go out of my way to import that here.

However, I have a question. Is it common for NTSC video to have a reddish tint to it? I notice that more PAL films are Bluer then the NTSC masters. I ask this because in the case of Dead Poets Society, I prefer the red in the picture as it gives the film an overall warm, Autumn afternoon feel to the film, which suits the story. Not very happy about the non-anamorphic, tho.

Here is a preview of the UPCOMING Doinel Boxset comparison with the Older Criterion version and the Fox Lorber (The 400 Blows)

Criterion - New

Criterion - Old

Fox Lorber

It looks like the older Criterion (and F/L) were horizontally cropped, either that or they were squished which looks like it might be the case. So far the picture quality in the new version, is as you might expect, a vast improvement.

I'll do a comparison with the entire Doinel Boxset to the Fox Lorber's as soon as I can...

Kino*- Region 0 - NTSC "The Tin Drum" vs. Dreamix (S. Korean) 'Tin Box' - Region 3 - NTSC

Although the image quality is in Dreamix's favor, neither DVD really shows this film to its best advantage. The Dreamix may be sharper and anamorphic but appears to have other issues. The 'Out of Print' Kino NTSC version has burned in yellow sub-titles which is a negative. The Dreamix shows some contrast boosting and edge enhancement (see beach scene at site). The Kino has been slightly vertically cropped and appears to have been zoomed in to make up for it. Both have the Director Schlöndorff commentary. As this film is not a favorite of mine, my suggestion would be to wait till a better edition comes out. As far as the "Tin Box" Dreamix edition goes, I suspect a better image quality DVD is on its way soon.

Gary on your site there's a comparison between region 1 and region 2 of Dead Poets Society that shows region 2 as having a commentary and featurette not on region 1. I eagerly bought it for $20 US from the UK and lo and behold it is barebones!!

Is there more than one version for region 2?

Hi Debbie,

I'm sorry that happened. "Dead Poets Society" is one of the comparisons that I did not do.

I have forwarded your quiery to Markus of Chiaroscuro, who did that comparison.

He will respond to you shortly.

Gary
The special edition version is a re-release of the original barebones disc, but trust me, it is out there. If you bought it off Ebay or some other auction site, it's entirely possible you got the first edition on faith that it would be the SE.

alas I can't, I am 1500 miles from home in Moscow. But yes, there are two
versions in Region 2: the old bare bones one and the new special edition.
http://www.playserver4.com/play247.a...arch&adudisc=y lists the new
one. But I can't tell whether they are cheating or not.

Cheers

Nice The Shining comparison.
You said about the documentary:

Quote:
I wonder WHY the title font in Vivian Kubrick's short featurette was changed when it was made so many years ago? It seems crazy to me.

Out of curiosity, I checked my VHS copy taped from a BBC broadcast "rerun" in 1999, to see which dvd version matched the titles of the (I assume) original version from the BBC.

Of course, neither one did.

Good question for the next WB chat....not.
