Direct Graphic DVD Comparisons now Online! - Page 70

Re: Direct Graphic DVD Comparisons now Online!

Re; Paul's comment - Just so we are not taken out of context - our review highlights a few different emails that we recieved (not only the one he quoted). This would support the variety of impressions we received after our posting and comparing of the screen captures from the new Blu-ray restoration and the older SD-DVDs.
Another quote we used, from a person I greatly respect:
Quote:
I saw it many times, and I owned a 35mm IB Tech print of it, and the Blu-Ray screencaps look exactly right and I can't wait to get the SD DVD upon its release. Kudos to all involved, especially the "supervisors" - Coppola and Willis, who certainly know what their film should look like."

In the past, Mr Harris even joined us in attempting to dissuade PaulP from his other stated opinions regarding color in both the Criterion Black Narcissus and Kwaidan comparisons. Despite the fact that many feel that Paul is not on solid footing with his judgements - he is still entitled to his opinion even if I personally felt he was wrong back then as well as now.

Re: Direct Graphic DVD Comparisons now Online!

I just find it strange that the colors look nothing alike, not even close. Or don't you agree?

Forget the '01 DVDs, I'm furious that the Blurays don't look like my VHS tapes recorded off Bravo.

Re: Direct Graphic DVD Comparisons now Online!

I think this is turning into another case where the restoration might be technically correct, but it doesn't match what I've been seeing for the last 35 years. Some of those colors just look odd. It doesn't help that it's Coppola. It wouldn't be the first time that his "vision" has morphed with age.

A perfect example is the newer director's cut of THE OUTSIDERS. He completely tossed out the entire orchestral score composed by his late father, Carmine Coppola, in favor of songs from the period. It changed the whole atmosphere of the film. I'm not saying it was for the worse, but I just felt bad for poor Carmine.

I wouldn't. That score was terrible.

An email sent from the same party that PauP was quoting...

Quote:
...We put on 'The Godfather' Blu-ray last night and were totally blown away and 'in awe' of the three dimensionality of the presentation. It is staggering both visually and audibly. On our system, it beats out all the other Blu-rays, bar none, in our collection (including, The Searchers, Rio Bravo, Blade Runner etc.) We too, are still 'catching our breaths' as Leonard so aptly put it. This is the first time that I've felt the people on the screen were alive and almost in the room with me.

I just wanted you to know that I have completely reversed my original opinion ....

Email from RAH:

For the record...
For GF 1, we located (at the Academy Archive) and used as reference, the original 35mm dye transfer print on which Gordon Willis had signed off in 1972. It had NOT BE TOUCHED OR VIEWED IN THE INTERVENING DECADES!
This was our pure and undeniable reference, giving us color and density information with very few printing anomalies.
Reference for GF 2 were several dye transfer prints which had survived, and which were loaned to us by AMPAS, UCLA and the Harvard Film Archive. For GF 3, we had Bob Raring, the original Technicolor timer on board.

Gary, in your opinion, are those bluray caps representative of how the movie looks when it is played?
Such as this one http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDRe...0blu-ray/2.jpg
vs this http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/dvdcom...er/0.25.52.jpg
It looks like the black level is off on the bluray, too bright/white, but
that is probably not how it looks when it is played, right?

Re: Direct Graphic DVD Comparisons now Online!

That would depend on what system you are watching it on RickardL...
As one example, my plasma tends to intensify colors and brighten (even at nuetral settings) but I've seen it projected at a friends house and, yes, it looks just like my caps which were derived without filters or enhancements of any kind.

Did you not see the quotes in the GF comparison?:

White Sheik says in email: ".....
Quote:

Herr Schreck from the Criterion Forum states: "
Quote:
I saw-- coincidentally-- the restored Godfather in the cinema yesterday. I have no doubt that what I saw yesterday resembled very closely the film upon it's original release... no attempt was made to soup it up. And the Blu caps look just like what I saw...

Gary

Wrong! Disney has gone back to the original elements to show the original 2.55:1 frame for the very first time. Keep in mind that when Disney began production on Sleeping Beauty, the CinemaScope AR was 2.55:1. It wasn't changed to 2.35:1 until the majority of animation was completed on Sleeping Beauty. Go and take a look at some comparison pics here:
http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htf/...-2008-a-8.html

The frame has actually been opened up on all four sides. Previous transfers were derived from 35mm reduction elements, which apparently were cropped down from the 2.21:1 frame area of the 70mm prints. This transfer is really a marvel.

Unless I'm mistakened, the original Technirama elements of Sleeping Beauty are 2.25:1 due to the double-neg size.

Re: Direct Graphic DVD Comparisons now Online!

Yes, but Technirama was a flexible format in terms of composition, and it's clear from the screencaps I've seen thus far that there was a lot more information on the negative than wound up on the 35mm CinemaScope reduction prints. Remember that the 2003 transfer and any prior widescreen transfers were taken from 35mm reduction elements.

P.S. I have the upcoming Weinstein (Genius label) '4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days' and it appears that most North Americans won't be seeing this film in its Cannes winning 2.35:1 format. It is 1.78. I'll compare it eventually.
