Fox Lorber Region 0 NTSC "L'Enfer" vs. MK2 - Region 2 - PAL

The Fox/Lorber transfer is very poor, but it is slightly sharper with noticeable grain. The colors are way off on one of these DVD and I would guess it is with Fox. The Mk2 is smoother and anamorphic but slightly hazy in spots. There is artifacting (digital pixilation) issues on both discs and surprising for a film only 8 years old. I assume that somewhere out there is a very tight print of this fine film. The ratio of these discs is not the same. My guess would be that the MK2 is slightly off as the characters look a little elongated to me. Neither version is worth recommending as is, but i you want to buy now, then the Mk2 is your only choice. The Extras on the MK2 are good, but don't have English sub-titles. Hopefully a sterling print will be forthcoming from some other production company.

Gary, will it be possible for you to do a comparison between the Alliance widescreen version of The Straight Story with the US release?

Thanks

I could be wrong, but I think they are the exact same transfer.
I didn't know about the different transfer either until James mentioned it (4 posts above) about how the Alliance transfer is horrible in comparison to the US one. I already have the Canadian one and I just want to know how much better the US release is.

Two more:

ERA Region o - NTSC "To Live" vs. TV1 Region 2 - PAL
Warner Region 1 - NTSC "Lolita" vs. Warner Re-issue Region 2 - PAL

No surprises but To Live screams out for an extensive DVD with Eng subs !!

P.S. Sorry Enrique I have no comment on the subtitle translations...

Gary, I've seen your website before, but this stuff is fantastic. The detailed descriptions of different versions/regions of dvds are extremely helpful. The transfer comparisons can be startling.

I've put in an order of the M6 version of L'Appartement as a result of your recommendaton of the film itself, and the fact that you've noted there are English subtitles. I'll just have to view it on my iMac (since it's PAL) until I get a Malata/JVC.

I'll be visiting regularly. Thanks much!

Universal Region 1 NTSC "Psycho" vs. Universal Region 2 / 4 - PAL

The Region 1 is better in both image and extras. Once again we have a case of how anamorphic images are not always the best ( unless done properly ). I could probably forgive the R2/4 version the slightly less sharp picture if it at least included the 1hour 30 minute documentary that the Region 1 has. This ends up being an easy choice - R1 all the way.

Parade Region 0 - NTSC 'The Stranger' vs. Focus-Films Region 0 - NTSC vs. Eureka Region 0 - PAL

A Welles film that I really like... and have heard the Roan R1 version is better than all three of these... can anyone look at my captures ( and their cropping mutilations ) and confirm...

Wow what a great resource, Gary!

I'm glad I didn't pick up Atanarjuat. I saw it at the Calgary Film Festival in 2001, and loved the film. The Columbia-Tristar version matches the colors perfectly (to be expected for a straight digital transfer).

To hell with Alliance-Atlantis. I always hated them.

The color variations in the different regions are amazing.

Overall, though, I'm glad I waited for the R1 product - in the mail to me as we speak!

Thanks for this, Gary. Your comparisions are a fantastic way to get an idea on how a disc has turned out.

Thanks Gary.

Talk about a night and day difference in picture quality between the Wellspring and Fox Lorber versions.

This is a no-brainer.
I bet the Wellspring disc came from a PAL source. It would explain the 'flickering' I see in the starts in that first screen shot. My RP91 doesn't do well with 2:2 pulldown.

Quite a revealing comparison on the flaws of the new Artificial Eye disc... aside from the audio problem that I am sure that is cause for recall and replacement...

AB UK has not released Brazil. Perhaps you're thinking of Time Bandits?
