Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go - Page 7

Re: Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

October was awards season It was nestled in-between the Scorcese and the Eastwood pics Oh well, just another 5 weeks longer. I've waited more than three years...what's another few weeks

Anyways, dropping that trailer (and the eye candy is only a fraction of why it was great, trust me) and then pushing it back is chinese water torture. If one of the damn fests showing it this fall was within ten hours, I'd probably drive to see it

Patience, patience,
Chuck

Re: Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Can a mere trailer generate so much buzz?

I read at C.H.U.D. that "it's now a wide release - it was listed at 1200 or 2500 screens before."

Also another quick take:

http://www.ugo.com/channels/filmtv/f...rns/072506.asp

Quote:
The Trailer: Darren Aronofsky's dream (and dream-like) project finally comes to life after about six years of stops and starts. You probably won't get the story from the rather experimental nature of the trailer, but here's the scoop: In the present day, Hugh Jackman plays a doctor researching the cure for cancer, of which his wife, Rachel Weisz, is a victim. Rachel's character is writing a novel in her dying days, called The Fountain, which deals with a Spanish conquistador's search for the Tree of Life in the 1500s. And, in the year 2500, a man travels through space in a ship that houses this Tree of Life, and... well, you're just going to have to see this incredible film.

Our Prediction: Prediction nothing. I've had the pleasure of seeing the film, and while I am sworn to secrecy about its secrets, I can tell you this: you've never seen a film like The Fountain, and you never will again. Be sure to see it - in a theater, dammit - and let this powerful, creative, unapologetically emotional sci-fi love story take you to another time and place - sometimes several at once.

Uh oh.

Boos greet 'flatulent' Fountain

Re: Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

No uh oh. Film festival folks and Hollywood aren't likely to love The Fountain. As discussed in the Oscar Watch, this film was never a contender for that. This is heady science-fiction, not easily digestible, therefore not Oscar-worthy.

If I am to trust either the Venice Film Festival or the director...I'll choose the director every time.

We'll see soon enough, but methinks I'll diverge from the critics on this one. Sometimes a film *IS* smart enough to go right over their head.

people weren't receptive to fight club when it first came out either =). we'll just have to wait until the film actually arrives to judge for ourselves.

but as i may or may not have noted earlier, i didn't like his 1st films: pi & requeim (sp?) for a dream (even after 3 and 4 helpings of each).

Re: Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

This will be playing at VIFF this year(Vancouver Int. Film Festival) which I'll be attending in about 3 weeks. I'm all psyched to see this, but have been scared after hearing about the Venice incident.

But, however bad or good, I'll be seeing it in advance, which is cool.

I just watched the trailer again for this and it just amazed me again.

I am super psyched to see this movie.

It looks incredibly visionary and marvelous.

James B has seen it and has a minireview.

Moriarty needs an editor really, really, really, REALLY bad.

Nice review, though.

Re: Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

I'm a little late, but I just now saw the teaser and trailer for The Fountain. I can truly say that I have found my most anticipated film for 2006.

Damn, that was a breathtaking trailer.

Re: Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

I saw this last week and thought that the film was just okay.

The three different time frames diminish the film's dramatic impact and the story is quite confusing at times...I have no idea what exactly was going on in those final scenes.

At times the film is quite pretty to look at, but the equivalent Cliff's notes would have been nice. Although it has a different story, this film reminded me very much of the 1972 film Slaughterhouse-Five

Re: Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

There are spoilers in that article. However, it's also a fascinating look at why the film took so long to make. After seeing the film I'll certainly want to read the graphic novel -- apparently the graphic novel is based on the first version of the script, which was revised heavily to make this version of the film for a much lower budget.

The most interesting thing is that the effects are analog!

That wasn't a problem for me with The Prestige. Are the three different time frames intercut with each other, or are they presented in order one after the other? I liked the intercutting done with The Prestige, and those time frames were much closer together so it was potentially more difficult identifying which one you were at and to keep track of it all with each switch. I'd imagine the three different time frames in this film are quite distinct, no?

They are intercut with each other. It's easy to tell which time frame you are watching (medieval/present/future) just by looking at Hugh Jackman's clothes and hair (or lack of it). The time-frame jump doesn't make the film confusing, it's the story itself and the wordless, special effects-heavy ending that left me baffled...interesting to look at, but an explaination would be nice.

The way this sequence was depicted in the graphic novel was mindblowing, trippy, transcendent, poetic, beautiful, happy, sad, heartbreaking, euphoric, cathartic....

Sometimes all at the same time.

It's definitely open to interpretation. Each time I read the graphic novel (3 times), I got something a little different.

Very much looking forward to seeing this film (multiple times).

That is the effect of the final sequence as depicted in the film, and I was especially startled when Hugh Jackman suddenly turns into (DELETED)

I probably just have to see the film again in order to make sense of it

Re: Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

I saw this at the world premiere Saturday night in Hollywood. It was pretty cool, Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz were a couple rows behind us and Darren Aronofsky introduced the film.

What a CRAZY film! I can honestly say that it was one of the most enrapturing experiences I have ever had with a film. Usually during any movie I fidget and move around in my seat, but I realized that during The Fountain I barely moved at all. I'm not sure if I fully understand the final moments of the film, (or if you are even meant to understand them). Part of the film becomes apparently about
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
reincarnation, what with Conquistador Hugh shockingly turning into a bunch of plants after he drinks the sap. It is interesting that Izzi is present in the modern section of the story, since he obviously never returned to her in the past with the sap. Modern day Tommy and Izzi certainly don't act like people with hundred year pasts, except for what could be memories conjured through Izzi's book. I'd definitely be interested to read someone's in-depth analysis at some point. There's so much going on here...

I'm definitely going to read the graphic novel now, I had been saving it till after I saw the movie!

Re: Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

I will have to see this I have been waiting for ever for this film. I am a huge Aronofsky fan ever since I first saw Pi. I was a little disappointed when he was not selected to do Batman Returns. I just wish the film would have been finished with the original cast instead of the 2nd or 3rd choice of a cast.

Re: Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

I'm getting a definite TPM/AOTC vibe from the reviews on RT...most acknowledge that the film is visually stunning but point out problems in the script. Devin at CHUD calls it the best film of 2006 but Steve Rhodes calls it the worst...sounds like this one will be a love/hate kind of deal.
