My personal odyssey to get on the list for BestBuy Preferred Customer coupons. - Page 2

The coupons we get are NOT the same. The past promo she got the 10% of one, 15% off 2, 20% off 3 deal. Mine were for a straight 10% off up to 3.

That's mighty interesting. Targeted mail based upon the different lists purchased. I wonder why one group would get the "better" coupons? I am intrigued by marketing concepts like that. Sometimes they make sense to me. Sometimes they seem like gibberish.

So if they buy the list from your mortgage company, you get coupons. If they buy the list from the bank that issued your Visa, you get coupons. If they buy the list from the spa you signed up to win a free membership from, you get coupons. It's very simple, really.

And, maybe, just maybe, Dave, if you write them directly you just might get the coupons, too. Time will tell, I guess. Here is the latest post from my friend Craig at BestBuy:

Quote:
Dear Mike Frezon,

Thank you for writing back to Best Buy and providing me with your current
mailing address. I have submitted a request on your behalf to have your
name added to our Preferred Customer Mailing List. Please allow one to two
mailings before the name addition takes effect. Thank you in advance for
your patience.

Thank you.

Respectfully,

Craig Fornell

Since I have never gotten the coupons or their mailings, its hard for me to say how long it might take to get past "one or two mailings".

I will certainly post here when I receive any further correspondence from BestBuy--either by cyber-post or snail mail.

I went to the best buy web site and checked the receive offers by e mail box. Filled in the info and am waiting to see what I get.

Well, I don't have their credit card but I'm on the list 3 times at 2 different addresses. Old home(parents) and my current home.

Here's what I received this time:

A)Envelope with separated coupons and a brochure of some sort:
1 coupon for 10% off music and movies(limit 5),
1 coupon for 25% off computer peripheral installation(limit 1), and
1 coupon telling me to get the credit card and receive January 2003 financing on purchases $299 and up

B)Fold over "thingie" with a seal and strip of coupons:
1 coupon for $5 off video game software and accessories(limit 3),
1 coupon for $2 off music and movies(limit 3),
1 coupon for 10% off big items

C)Fold over "thingie" with seal and strip of coupons:
1 coupon for 15% off digital media (limit 2),
1 coupon for 10% off music and movie titles(limit 5, and
1 coupon for 10% off big items

I have ordered from their website and shopped fairly regularly at 4 stores in 3 different states over the past 5 years. I'm not sure how to get on the list or why my selection varies so much. Essentially only the 10% off coupons on box sets or $2 off on under $20 titles are what will draw me in.(as if I needed the nudge to pick up the weekly DVD crack stash ) I would like more of those 20% off offers from last summer if a Best Buy rep is listening.

The other thing I don't understand is the proper use of these coupons. Some stores ring up a disc and it says not valid(new release on sale), while others have no such system and you get 10% off anything.

Hi Lou from Delanson! Welcome to the HTF! Seems like that would be just the ticket, huh?!?! Well, I did just that a long time ago and haven't seen anything since!

Facts:

We cannot find a pattern
BB isn't real forthcoming with info on how to get on a list
They state that to get the coupons you should get a BB Credit Card
Folks without BB Credit Cards get coupons
Folks *with* BB Credit Cards *don't* get coupons
People who complain about not getting coupons may or may not get them
There are multiple TYPES of coupons, all good on the same weekend
Some folks who used to get coupons don't anymore
Those that were "dropped" may have been using them every time like clockwork
Some folks, however, got them for a looong time while never using them, and kept getting them anyway
Conclusion: BB farms this out to at least 2, maybe 3 marketing firms to handle for them, and tells them when a "coupon weekend" will be (based on when it fits their corporate marketing plan and revenue needs), and then lets the subcontracters administer it any way they see fit. The subcontracters are probably indifferent to communication outside the "normal channels" and that is why special requests to get onto lists can fall through the cracks. At least one of the subcontracters uses some form of computer tracking of responsiveness, and at least one of them does not. At least one of the firms is using multiple methods of collecting names. One or more of the firms bases their style of processing on geographic sectioning. None of the subcontracter firms will cooperate with the others. BB corporate is not interested in using an iron hand to make things uniform, as long as they generate the revenue they expect.

Well now, Dave. You have seemed to put all our eggs in one basket -- as it were.

But it still doesn't make me any happier!

Jeff, do you know if anyone has ever broached the subject of a Capital District HTF get-together? I've seen quite a few local addresses here myself.

Based on this thread (Best Buy Preferred Customer Weekend 8/9-11) I have written again to my friends at Best Buy:

Quote:
Dear Craig Fornell:

It has come to my attention that BestBuy has declared August 9 - 11 as a
Preferred Customer Weekend and has sent through the mail coupons to
"preferred customers".

I have not received any such coupons despite your earlier e-mails (see
below) saying I would be placed on your list.

Can you please respond with an explanation?

Thank you.

Mike Frezon

I'll report back any further communiques.

Rock on, Mike. Good luck.

I wish i would get coupons. I have the credit card and bought a RPTV with it.
My mom got coupons for this weekend in the mail the other day. She doesn't have a BB credit card, and hardly ever buys anything there. In March, she bought me a DVd player for my birthday and got the warranty on it. That's all I can think of, but I think she put my name on the warranty, so I don't know. Weird.
Another possible scenario is this. Have you ever made a purchase at a Best Buy store (or SEARS or other retailer, many of them do this) and along with your receipt is printed a customer satisfaction survey? These things are typically randomly generated. They ask the customer to call a toll free number or mail in a response to a quick customer service survey. In the case of Best Buy, if you call the number and answer the questions they enter your name into a drawing and you could win a $500 BB shopping spree (gift card). Perhaps some of the people who completed the survey also get onto the Prefered Customer List?!?

Mike:

I was in the same position you are in. I never received coupons in the mail and I had been a BB customer for years. The only way I found out about preferred customer discount weekends was right here on this forum. I would then go into my local BB that weekend and DEMAND THE DISCOUNT (refer back to my previous post in this thread) and got it. You might want to consider doing the same until you get on their list.

I continually called the BB customer service number, threatened to cancel my BB credit card, etc. The rep apologized profusely and explained that a third party marketing company was handling the coupons but she assured me that my name would be placed on the list.

Now I seem to be getting all the mailings. Not only did I receive four coupons for this weekend but I also received an invitation to join (for free) their REWARD ZONE program. When you join, you get a card similar to a credit card plus you'll receive a discount coupon good for 10% off within 2-3 weeks after joining. Each time you make a purchase you show your card. You'll get 500 points every time plus one point for every dollar you spend. 12,500 points equals a $5.00 certificate. It seems to be a good way for BB to track your purchases, similar to those supermarket cards but it's also a way to get some discounts.

Don't give up. Keep on BB customer service until you get satisfaction. Once you're on their list, you'll be inundated with goodies.

Gentlemen:

Thank you for your support and encouragement. It's like I'm off to war or something, huh?!?! Or maybe off to destroy an evil ring?!?!

Anyway, thanks!

I'll keep reporting my efforts.

Chris:

They could get it from the survey, however it is done by phone by touchtone and they only take your name / phone number.

Hi Craig!

Thanks for your prompt response! What do you mean when you say it takes "one to two mailings" for the name addition to take effect? How often does BestBuy do these mailings? I am anxious to spend money (MORE money) at your store!

Thanks again!

Mike

Hey Mike,

Not sure if it helps or not, but I had previously never received any coupons either. However I have gotten them the last 2 times. The only change of buying habits I've had is I've bought a few dvds online at BestBuy.com over the last few months. Nothing drastic, maybe one title every 2 weeks or so over the last few months.

Again, it may not mean anything, but thought I'd let you know anyways.

Hey Greg! Thanks for the info. But, as I guess you can tell from the earlier posts, we just can't put our exact fingers on what triggers the starting/stopping of the sending of Preferred Customer coupons from BestBuy.

While I have not ordered anything from BestBuy.com, I have registered at their website. Nothing. And, I bet some of the people getting the coupons will soon respond here that they have never ordered from BB.com!

All I know is I've spent a ton of $ at my local BestBuy and consider myself a "preferred customer"...even if I have to drag BB to that way of thinking.

*Raises hand*

Although they have ceased mailing me the coupons after sporadically mailing them for a year or more.

Here's something interesting to contribute to this discussion:

I have two e-mail addresses I've used to order items from BB.COM, usually for in-store pickup. One I haven't used in a while. I just got an e-mail to that address telling me, "Hey, there's something missing at Best Buy. NAMELY, YOU!"

It goes on to tell me this:
Quote:
Hey, where have you been? We haven't seen you at BestBuy.comâ„¢ lately. And to be honest, we miss you. Come back now and get a $2* coupon toward CDs, DVDs or anything else you've had your eye on.

A digital coupon is included at the bottom.

I can combine this with my LotR digital coupon, for $12 off anything I care to order online, even marking for in-store pickup.

Hey, and all Sci-Fi is 10% off right now? Cool...Star Trek TOS episodes, here I come!

Da-ave! Da-ave! Aaaargh!

And, BestBuy doesn't even know I'm alive!

I feel like a high school dweeb freshman who wants a date with the senior captain of the cheerleading squad!

Ask Craig if the rest of us can send him our addresses too, please!!!

I'd love to!

Except.....I never heard back from him after my last e-mail AND I'm STILL not on their list! Four months later and nothing.

I'm not holding my breath.
Let me add too that there doesn't even seem to be any pattern to how to get on the list of Preferred Customer service. But I sure as hell do know how to be taken off of it though: don't make any purchases with the coupons!!!

No joke, I got coupons by "accident". Unfortunately, they were being sent to Pikeville while I was still living in Lexington. After three consecutive weeks of receiving coupons (and not using them) they disappeared. Why does my dad never tell me these things?

Dome: That's a sad, sad tale.

Three weeks of coupons, thrown to the wind.

Think of the savings for you. Think of the business for BestBuy.

Wouldn't you think such coupon distribution would be a win-win situation for both customer and company?
Mike, maybe you should buy some stuff at Circuit City, Comp USA, Office Depot etc. and scan the receipts. Send copies to Craig and any other management address you can dig up for BB and do it every time you buy a DVD or any other CE related product that BB might sell.

Maybe they will eventually get you on there. All this talk has got me interested in getting on the list as well.

Lee, that's not a bad idea. A little bit of work, but maybe I'll start stashing all my receipts in a special place and we'll see what happens.

As of today (September 19), still no notice from BestBuy re: preferred customer status. But just to show I don't hold grudges, I made a significant purchase at my local BB last night.

Even though I was barely able to contain my drool while ogling the new smaller widescreen TVs (Phillips), I was only in the market for a new washing machine. To get a 10% discount AND 18 months interest-free financing I went ahead and got myself approved for the BestBuy credit card.

Will it make a difference? Testimony here is contradictory. Only time will tell.

Ironically, the young female blue shirt who conducted my transaction at one point asked me (out of the blue)....so, do you shop here at this store often? I replied, as a matter of fact, I do! She said, that's what we like to hear!
