movie poster frames?

Anyone have some good places to buy the 27X40 frames. Here in town the are $60-$115 and vary from glass to plexi glass. They also want to know if i wanted to mat it (glue the poster to a board) but i would like to replace these so i said no. Which is better glass or plexi glass? I heard glass will glare real bad if you shine a light on it which is what i am going to do. Thanks for the help in advance. John

I just ordered several 27 x 40 metal poster frames from www.frameusa.com. They have several styles starting around $23. I read on a site somewhere that dealt with old posters that plexi was preferred. If I remember right it said glass leaches acid or something similar that damages the poster. I can't vouch for that though. I suppose you can do a search for poster preservation and see what pops up.

Much like yourself, I have looked everywhere for these poster frames. I first got into them after I finished constructing my home theater and began a long search for frames to my liking. I looked everywhere and decided first to get a movie poster lightbox. I ended up buying two poster lightboxes from Fashgraphx. They run about $300 each, but it was worth the money. After I installed and looked around how it was done, I took a trip to Orchard Supply Hardware and now I have about seven poster lightboxes. My advice would be to buy one first and see how it's constructed - believe me, they are very easy to build. You can also get a few different models very inexpensively at www.showoffdisplays.com also.

Now for movie poster frames. The only place that I can truly recommend is www.hollywoodposterframes.com. My little daughter was surfing on eBay one day for some DVDs and I ran across these guys. I ended up getting two frames for $89 plus shipping. The frames are incredibly sturdy - black metal frames with cardboard backing and wire hangers. The UV-resistant plexiglass and frames are cut to size and easily opens in and out for poster changing. Check them out - you won't regret it.

Louie, Thanks for the reply... i ordered 3 frames from showoffdisplays.com. they were very professional and great to work with. The Frameplace.com seem to be a cheap frame and i try to make it a habit not to buy the cheapest things out there but also not to buy the most expensive. I bought 2 frames that are regular and 1 with the "now showing" or " coming soon" posted at the bottom of the frame. All 3 shipped were $200 which is not bad. The shadow box would have been nice but i couldn't find myself spending the $300 for the first one. LOL John

About the frames, I didn't notice the link until just today. It should be www.hollywoodposters.com not the previous one I posted.

If you have the time and effort, I would also definitely recommend building yourself a frame. Go to any Michael's arts and crafts store and pick yourself the pre-cut metal frames. They sell them in different sizes, ie., 22, 23, 24" up to about 45". They usually run about $10-15 for every two bars/edges so you're looking to spend about $25-30 just for the metal frames only. After you pick up the metal frames, go to Michael's framing department and ask them to cut you a piece of standard cardboard with a matte white back (shows up better with posters) and it's about $2 apiece. Michaels do not sell plexiglass so your next stop would be to go to Orchard Supply Hardware or a local Home Depot.

Regular Plexiglass runs about $15 for a 27 x 40 piece. You can also get UV resistant Plexiglass for a few dollars more. You'll also need to pick up some wires to hang the poster and they run about $3 for a 30" piece. Overall, your cost is going to be about $60 if you do this yourself. I've seen frames exactly like these selling for as much as $120 at FramesUSA (with the exact same type of material). If you have the time, you can save yourself quite a bit of money this way and believe me, you'll love these frames. I have since built about 10 frames and they're all sitting throughout my house.

William, Who is Ikea? I have ordered some from Showoffdisplays.com which look very nice and have a 1.5 border. I wanted a big border. Now i am getting ready to go drop off my red velvet to a lady to get sewn up for some curtains. It's going to cost more to sew it up than what that mat'l cost. LOL Thanks guys for the help. John

You won't be disappointed in your frames from Show Off Displays. I have two of them and they are great. I got both the wood frame and the metal and I prefer the metal. Since I got mine they have a snapper type frame that you just lift up the frame edges (they are on hinges) put your poster in place and snap them back down.

Ikea is a store that is not located everywhere. We have them here in PA. To find them online, go to http://www.ikea.com and search for a location near you if there happens to be one. They tend to sell a lot of wood furniture and things of that nature. Not expensive at all....

I ordered the very cheapest 27x40" poster frames from frameusa.com (9 @ 11.75, about $140 after tax and S/h)

It's been a while since I ordered. They said it would take 10-12 business days to ship! What the frig! That's too long for such cheap, plastic frames. Someone needs to get a managerial accountant and production supervisor over there to regulate, and while they're at it, they should hire an IT specialist and web-artist to strengthen their website!

If these things suck, I'm returning them and getting frames from show-of-displays.

I wish this thread came up earlier (I consulted HTF on this issue earlier, and all sources led to frameusa.com)

Well I got all my poster frames from frameusa.com on friday and of course they are all cracked (plus the quality is not to my liking).



Hopefully I can get my money back and order some sweet metal ones from showoffdisplays. Keep your fingers crossed for me, guys.

I have six 27x40 frames from Suncoast -- I usually don't buy anything there, but these were $19.99 each and were adequate for my needs. You usually find them all the way in the back of the store with the posters ...

I did the same thing as you....has the plastic frame with the plastic covering but wasn't easy to pass up. Beware though, they do easily come apart. Thinking of just using some super glue to fix that minor problem.

I have heard of many people here saying that "their" Suncoast doesn't have them. The one I went to about 3 months ago or so had about 7 or 8, I got 6 of them.

And, as you stated, they are usually found BEHIND the posters.

I have two from showoffdisplays.com and they are great. They are solid.

I also have two I got from Suncoast Video. In PA they carry some that are very cheap ($20) but the price is reflected in the material. They do the job and saved me money though.

Actually the very first poster frame I got at Suncoast years ago had a wooden frame and was actually pretty well built for the same $20 price. Now they all have the plastic ones only for the same price -- but thats ok, they are good enough for my needs

I got a TEMPLE OF DOOM movie poster signed by Harrison Ford. I made the frame for it using Acrylic sheet from Home Depot (about $15). The frame is 2" wide 'chair rail' molding. There is a slot at the top that allows me to change posters easily. I painted the frame to go with poster and decor, but it could have been stained also. It can be seen here...

I recently received 5 27x40 frames ordered from frameusa.com. I am generally pleased with them. At $24 they are not bad. I ordered the "heavy metal" ones. The backing is cardboard with sliding clips allowing easy poster change. The frame is metal, the glass is plexiglass. I am OK with that as I read somewhere that plexi is preferred over glass. I checked for frame squareness and the corners are 90degrees. It took about 1.5 weeks to ship and arrived within 2 days Fedex ground. I would go back and buy more. The snapper frames arrived from ShowOff Displays this evening. They were extremely well packed in lots of bubblewrap and were quite easy to install and mount. They look great too.

I highly recommend them for those who want to easily change out their posters.

Are these sliding clips located on the back or on each side of the poster frame?

I figured it out.
I like your room decor.
I also like the way your posters look.
I am going with the heavy metal series because of you.
I didn't even think about looking at those frames.
I was going with the Metal I or II series at first.
I just assumed that the heavy metal series would cost a lot more.

Jinho: I don't know the model or anything but when I go to Ikea it's in the area with all the posters, I beleive they have black and silver it's large and made of metal, can't miss them really. They lock together and have a matte so you can put smaller posters as well.

Well guys i hate to open this again but... i ordered my frames from showoffdisplays.com a month ago and got them today. They where not as nice as i thought they should be for $200 i paid for them. Rick was nice to talk to on the phone but told me he would credit me for them coming late then changed his mind i guess. They have a chessy clamp for holding the posters which is the same clamp set up i have on a $10 frame i bought and the "now showing" i had to paint where they glued a regular frame to this piece. last words i won't buy any more frames from here! I hope others have had better luck than me.

My frameusa saga continues. If you guys got frames from them and you're happy, great....but if you have to deal with the customer service dept., you might kill yourself. As I mentioned, I returned all 9 of my frames as they were damaged (FedEx picked them up). They only gave me a full refund for 7 of 9 frames. So I called and they are going to give me the money back for the other two but with a 25% RESTOCK FEE!! THEY WERE ALL BROKEN! Plus, I didn't get a refund on the shipping and tax. In the end it's as if I gave 50 bucks to frameusa for nothing.
