Top 100 Cult films of all time

Thread Starter
This I think would be a much more fascinating and intriguing look at the movies. These would be films that are not necessarily American, not box office hits(Star Wars is too mainstream for a list like this)

These flicks must go against the grain. Stuff like Cast Away and Forrest Gump are out. It's practically a requirement if the film is not popular amongst the general public.

Although the AFI list has greeat selections, I don't think flicks like "Tootsie" are really deserving of such honors.
Tom Hanks is not, in my opinion on par with someone like Orson Welles... hmmm?

Here is a selection of films that have cult status for one reason or another.

This list is in no particular order. I have not seen some of these films, but my brother has.

1. Elvira, Mistress Of The Dark
2. The Wicker Man
3. The Fall Of The House Of Usher
4. Evil Dead
5. Night Of the Living Dead
6. The Bounty
7. Dawn Of The Dead
8. Evil Dead 2
9. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
10. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
11. Mad Max
12. Fitzcarraldo
13. Plan Nine From Outer Space
14. The terminator
15. A Nightmare On Elm Street
16. A Christmas Carol(1951 with Alistair Sim as Scrooge)
17. The Iron Giant
18. The Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane

This is not a complete list basically because I'm making it up as I go along.

My real problem with movies these days is the Hollywood Dream Machine. They continue to churn out pointless garbage(for the most part) year after year. A recent exception is the wonderful and unique "Iron gian". My wife just picked that up and it is an exception to the rule these days of amking animated flicks where Cats or Animals sing.
I personally see this ome as a sleeper that is going to take on greater and greater significance as time goes on. Don't let anyone tell you the CGI of the Giant isn't any good. Mixed in superbly with the traditional animation. A truly amazing film

My movie list will include unique, underrated, campy, horror, comedy, sci-fi, etc. A list of highly unique and rarely seen footage. Any contributions welcome. This is all for fun after all.

How should we define Cult Film?

------------------
Best, Sam
I would generally define a cult film as one who, due to performing badly in a commercial sense, is an unknown to the general populace. Some time afterwards, typically on video shelves or midnight runs, the movie gains acceptance by a loyal fan base who champion it in whatever way they can. This can be recommending it whenever possible, attending social situations built around it, or various other situations like collecing memoribilia about it. Cult films usually fall outside the standard formula, and sometimes defy classification. This is often given to horror and sci-fi films, but there are plenty of romance and comedy titles that qualify (in my eyes) as cult films.

I also say they generally have to be minor blips on the box office, because otherwise the cult like behavior is no different from the fan reaction given to Titanic and The Godfather.

As with any definition, there are innumerable exceptions or variations, but I think this applies to many of the commonly stated cult films, and all of the ones that I own and classify as cult.

You know which films I'm gonna mention!

If these aren't quite cult films, they ought to be!

The Ninth Configuration
The Reflecting Skin
Santa Sangre

------------------
My top ten movies that need to be on dvd:

1. Akira Kurosawa's Dreams 2. Freaks 3. Men With Guns 4. The Ninth Configuration 5. The Reflecting Skin 6. Santa Sangre 7. Treasure of the Sierra Madre 8. Voyager 9. White Heat 10. Wings of Desire

So if a Cult Movie must be a bomb, a lot of these shouldn't be on here. Like HALLOWEEN, ENTER THE DRAGON etc. etc.
If I had to name the first cult film that comes to mind, I'd say Roman Polanski's THE TENANT. It's really way out there (and very scary), and Paramount is considering a DVD release for it next year for which I am extremely grateful.

How in the world could I have left Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill! off my list? Thanks for bringin' it up, Grant!
Speaking of cult films and them being unnoticed by the general populus: When I was reading, "If Chins Could Kill..." by Bruce Campbell at work one day (part of my job requires me to sit in the hallway at school and wait for kids to 'go off' so I can restrain them) and nobody knew his name or ever heard of the EVIL DEAD movies. How ignorant of me to think everyone has heard/seen these great movies.

Pedantic maybe but The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has (a) never been a film and (b) was a success from day one...

I guess it does get cult status but I think that's more due to it's age. In its day I believe it was a lot bigger, hence the reason to make the TV Series.

There are more but these 3 are my favorite's and are most certainly "Cult Classics"

No there's not. There is, however, a TV series that aired some years ago on BBC. But I am virtually 100% positive that there is no separate theatrical film of HHGTTG.

As for cult films...For the love of pete people...
