The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.) - Page 14

Kyle,

That's some of the extra violence found in the European Cut. That cut was used for the Criterion Collection laserdisc, which every Blade Runner fan should own.

That portion of the scene is in many workprints as well as the European(International) cut. The cover of his VHS should be a white cover. As mentioned, it is also on the Criterion LD.

The original U.S. theatrical and the Director's cut will not have this portion.

Not necessarily. Some of the first "white cover" VHS tapes of Blade Runner (the really old Embassy stuff) was the domestic rated "R" cut. Also, a later release by Columbia Tristar home video (when they briefly held some of the New Line titles, which included the Nelson library) was in a VHS package that was black and red, and contained the European cut.

Wow thanks for the quick responses guys. Unfortunately I dont have and LD player, so could you guys tell me what my best bet would be for the longer/more violent/voice over cut here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/off...?condition=all

Thanks guys

Kyle,

The one that says 10th Anniversary Edition is the Columbia Tristar version, which was the last VHS version released before the Director's Cut hit theaters. It is the best version of the original film on VHS. Despite the fact that it is Pan & Scan, it was done from a very clean print and has an excellent Hi-Fi track with good bass.

I'd probably go with the one from galaxyentertainment. Although, I believe all the VHS International Versions were Pan and Scan. Mine is.

That is correct.

And I was DAMN pissed when I purchased that 10th anniversary version and it was just the same thing...again.

Haven't followed this for a while. I too would prefer a multi-disc set with BOTH the original narrated version AND the directors cut, both remastered audio and video.

If it´s Columbia who owns the rights, any chance of a Superbit?

Peter,

That was back in the early 90's. The Embassy/Nelson library has changed hands three times since then, and it's not clear if the rights to the original (non-Director's Cut) version are still a part of that film library.

The European VHS versions (but it's the Director's Cut I'm talking about) were released by Warner Bros. And I have both, a P&S and a Widescreen version.
I don't remember ever seeing the original version on tape, and (great logic) I don't own one.

If it is still part of the Embassy/Nelson library, then, oddly enough, it would be back in Columbia (Sony's) hands. Studio Canal owns the Embassy/Nelson library, and MGM is the US licensee. Sony just bought MGM, so...
you are correct about that- I just purchased the recent 16:9 THE GRADUATE from R3, which is an Embassy Picture, which has the Studio Canal opening logo.

(In this territory, the disc is put out by Universal...)

There is only the one DVD right now. We are only talking about getting a new version in the future!

Scheisse!!! (Mein Deutsche!) :b

nightflynet, I'm assuming your "real" name?

This is what we know (as rumor anyways.)

Here's some good news and bad news all at once. Sources are telling us that Warner is FINALLY at work once again on a Blade Runner: Special Edition. That's the good news. The bad news is that instead of the 3 or 4-disc ultimate edition we all hoped for (featuring all the different versions of the film), the title is now likely to be one of the studio's 2-disc editions, featuring only the recent "director's cut" version of the film (remastered from a new HD transfer), the Channel 4 On the Edge of Blade Runner documentary and perhaps a few other odds and ends. Look for it sometime in the first half of 2005.

Are we still going on about this, oh dear, yes they are going to release Blade Runner eventually on dvd in some sort of a special edition, probably next year, meanwhile there are 20,000 other dvd releases to keep us occupied until than.

psst! There are unconfirmed reports that the great Scott, Ridley has added more bits to his classic film. Apparently Scott is using clips from the film Labyrinth in a Deckard dream sequence, David Bowie singing Magic Dance. Also unconfirmed at this time are rumours that Edward James Olmos will be doing voice-over duties this time round, with Daryl Hannah narrating the next edition.

I hope they do add that C4 documentary to an upcoming sp.ed, it's really good and I think it's the one where Harrison Ford wasn't too happy to find that he's a you-know-what in the director's cut of the film. It was all news to him.

Wasn't this rumor just debunked on the last page?

Not really. Nils had responded to an "any news?" inquiry with a paraphrased version of the DB rumor. Which Charlie responded with "news to him."

Back a few pages Charlie did state that the interim version (<---key words here) rumor could very well be true but that he probably wouldn't have much to do with it.

Of course, the Charlie D Double-Throw Down, 8 Disc Super Limited Edition Extravaganza is what we really want.

Charlie is at work on two other Scott film SE's.

Today, New Year's Eve, over at the Digital Bits there is this stunning headline...

12/31 DAILY COLUMN: The last day of 2004... is a great one for Ridley Scott fansNoon PST

That headline no doubt caused a million Blade Runner fans' hearts to skip a beat, but, NO, it isn't what you think. It's just news of another film from Ridley Scott being released theatrically. Ho hum.

Fans of Blade Runner should report to their nearest emergency room if heart palpitations caused by that headline continue.

Looks like I may have to get the current DVD since it looks like the SE will be on Blu-Ray or whatever the next format will be, and it appears that it will be out before BR SE!

The above quote was made on April 15, 2002.

Looks like a very accurate assessment to me!

Yeah, I just about had a heart attack when I read that headline, but alas, all for not.

Wow, I made that statement in the initial post that started this thread. If you would have told me then that almost three years later we would be no closer to this fabled set than we were then I'd have not believed it. Yet here we are in just that situation. Unbelievable.

That said, bring on my Blu-Ray version of the bare-bones Blade Runner film. If I can't have my SE I'll settle for a nice hi-def bare-bones edition!

I keep waiting...I just want that nice new 16x9 HD downconverted DVD of the current D.C. Is that too much to ask?

Absolutely David, absolutely! I was just being a bit facetious. It'd be pretty bad if a first-generation DVD was replaced by a HD version BEFORE a better SD-DVD hit the shelves.

I'm sure Warners will hit up the plain ol' DVD market again with an improved DC before releasing a Blu-Ray/HD-DVD DC. I'm also sure I'll buy both!

Read the Warner chat transcript today, but not one question was asked on what is or will happen with the often talked about Blade Runner SE, including the International Cut w/narration as once available on a Criterion Laserdisc. Sorry I was not available to join the chat or ask about it to the folks at Warners last night.

Any news updates about this is greatly appreciated.
That the chat got by everyone without a Blade Runner question is a tragedy.
