The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.) - Page 89

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

True. At that point in time, probably the single biggest DVD release seen up to that point was the 3-disc Criterion Brazil, along with a few other exhaustive discs (the T2 Ultimate Edition, The Matrix, the Die Hard 5-Star Edition, Fight Club, the Se7en Platinum Edition, and several other vintage Criterions). Largely everything else, even those, were still two discs in scope at the maximum, although most of those competed quite well with Brazil, even at two discs.

But we shouldn't forget that the 4-disc Lord of the Rings were a revelation when they first came out, in terms of their unified content patterns...including the so-called "fluff" content from the theatrical releases would've significantly disrupted this unity in a sense, and I can understand Kurtti-Pellerin's disinterest in doing things this way (though the studio also surely played a role in this decision).

That said, though, I think Charlie also -- quite paradoxically -- just disproved this sentiment to an extent with the new Blade Runner set(s), showing that such content can in fact work in tandem, and setting a freaking huge new bar for future DVD releases to clear in the process.

It's a double-edged sword.

Just a follow up on the above post with regards to the producers Kurtti - Pellerin.

What have they done since the Lord of the Rings EE ?

I was very impressed with their Tron SE.

Cheers

No way the various incarnations of BR shouldn't be in every top 10. It'd be like leaving the LOTR four-disc editions off of top tens: completely ridiculous. Some sets are so amazing that to declare otherwise makes no sense, and this is one of them...

Then this is going to displease you even more, DVDTalk's top 20 doesn't even give Blade Runner a mention.

Top Twenty Releases of 2007

Wow. I'm down on record as having BR is my top release of the year. Caligula, is on their list too. Now I'm of the mind that a fantastic DVD release of a terrible film is just whip cream on shite, but that's just one man's opinion.

The Ford Boxset get's no love either. I don't own it. Admittedly, they have Ace in the Hole as their number one and it's my number 2 so I'm happy it got some love. Terrific and compelling film that still works for 2008 issues.

I'd imagine that they wrote the list in November before they even got a copy of Blade Runner. It's not like compiling a Top 20 DVD list is 'important' but if you can't even wait for Blade Runner (all early info pointed to this being an excellent set) to be released before compiling the list, it's not even worth reading. I loved Knocked Up (which is the #6 DVD of the year according to DVD Talk) and thought the DVD was very good but it's not even on the same playing field as the Blade Runner release.

I'm, at best, a casual fan of Blade Runner and even I think this release is amazing and a high point in DVD history- not just for 2007.

Watched Dangerous Days last night. Wow! Now I'm gonna go through the releases in chronological order since I haven't ever seen the theatrical cut and last saw the International cut in the mid-late 80s, so it'll be Theatrical, International, Workprint, DC, FC, then Disc 4. To boot, I also have the complete Arrested Development, Transporter and I, Robot to watch. Not enough hours in the day.

If viewed in chronological order wouldn't the workprint come first? My limited understanding was that this was viewed by preview audiences.

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

By preview audiences, yes, but the workprint wasn't viewed by the general public until ~1990. I'm going more for a progression away from Perenchio and Yorkin's interference with the film and towards the Final Cut. I'm trying to replicate that "revelatory" experience.

My replacement 5-disc set just showed up with a crack in the same exact spot as the previous set. It's on the clear plastic letter from Ridley Scott. It's near the toy spinner and it looks like that may be hitting it in transit.

Amazon will now be sending me a third set.

I watched all 5 chronologically and I started with the workprint.

That makes the changes such as the voiceover and the happy ending more apparent after watching the film in a rough form without them first.

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

I am debating whether to get the 5 disc SD. I have no interest in the toys etc., and was wondering if anyone could enlighten me as to the informativeness of the commentary on the workprint, and the "All our Variant Futures" featurette.
I am a fan of the film, but not obsessively so. I do usually find the behind the scenes working of making movies interesting.

Thanks

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

Well it depends. The commentary is fantastic--a lot of it is pointing out differences, but it also functions as a sort of "scholar" analysis of the film the way Criterion might do--and the featurette on the making of the Final Cut is really good as well; but for an extra 20 or 30 bucks its hard to say if this is justified if you are only a casual fan. I would think the 4-disk might be better suited but if you have some disponsable income the workprint disk is a great capper to a terrific set.

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

Wow speechless is hardly a word I would use for the Dangerous Days documentary.

Congrats to Charles for doing an outstanding work of art.

I guess working for Ridley Scott has its advantages.

I never imagined that you could hold our attention for those 3,5 hours that this docu marathon lasts. I found it to be so engrossing that you would wonder what will come next.

Seeing people like Bud Yorkin & Jerry Perenchio participate and be as frank as they are. Sometimes you really need to stick to your guns and believe that the best is yet to come.

I guess Terry Gilliam's battle for Brazil fails in comparison.

It's also really intrigiung that 1982 prove to be an innovative year for films that are ahead of its time.

Specifically Blade Runner, The Thing and TRON. All 3 movies have stood the test of time, and have been rediscovered through DVD.

I may finally be getting this wonderful sounding set this weekend,as a late B-day/Christmas gift from the wife. Since i'm a completist I of course want the briefcase. Hopefully my local Hasting's will have it. Wish me luck!

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

I received the 5-disc suitcase from Amazon yesterday after waiting five days, and it came in good condition. My number for this set is 040749/103000. Amazon put some air packet packaging, and I think the case was cellophaned at the factory.

I watched most of the documentaries, and I was very impressed with the detail each person gave on the film. It's too bad William Sanderson (J.F. Sebastian) was not interviewed. I wonder why he did not wanted to do it?

I have not had a chance to watch any of the cuts, but I plan to watch them all to see the differences. Highly recommended set to buy.

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

I watched Dangerous Days last night. I must admit I was wondering if 3 1/2 hours was not going to be overkill.

Not to worry, it was terrific. Well paced and did not get bogged down in repetitive comments or themes.

My favorite section was around art direction and issues. I'm a fan of matte paintings and the section around them was quite interesting and well done.

I thought the pacing was wonderful and when music was included it worked quite well. Congrats to William Hooke and the other editors.

If I thought it could have used one thing, that would have been a timeline of some sort from scripting to premiere.

The lighting of the interviewed participants was also terrific. From the other documentaries that I've watched through the years, many struggle with striking a balance between being over-lit and under-lit, this was terrific throughout.

Damn fine coffee, Charlie!

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

While watching the Dangerous Days Documentary, there was another shot of the round sun in it (versus the fuzzy sun).

Dangerous Days

In a prior post, I mentioned that the fuzzy sun started appearing on video with the 2006 Director's Cut. It however, creates a new continuity error with other shots of the sun both before and after it. Such as:

2007 Final Cut

Other shots from prior post.

Laserdisc

1997 Director's Cut

2006 Director's Cut

2007 Theatrical Cut (note: which is the exactly the same as the '07 DC and the '07 International Cut)

Was interesting to hear Ridley say that his being forced to add a VO was 'rubbish'-he'd had it in mind already.
As with 'Kubrick prefers Full Frame only', another myth bites the dust...

Urgh, overlapping discs! Any scratches reported?

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

I finally received my copy of the SD briefcase on Friday from WHV, but couldn't begin to delve into the set until yesterday night. I started by watching the Final Cut and it looked and sounded fantastic. I tried to keep an eye out for changes but beyond the obvious (some line changes, vfx fixes, some new shots, the re-edited unicorn dream), I can't say I noticed many. In fact, many things that I thought were changes were revealed to me when I watched the original '82 domestic cut shortly after to be things I never noticed or picked up on before! I also scanned through the '82 international and '92 director's cuts taking note of the added violence in the '82 and the narration-less sequences and original unicorn dream in the DC just to refresh myself on how the various versions stacked up against each other. I concluded that the Final Cut isn't a wholly new experience. Rather, it updates and makes complete a classic movie and finally gives it its long deserved definitive edition the way these things should been done.

I was debating whether I should check out the workprint edition next or go into the extras. I think I'll probably save the final disc for last - sort of like the cherry on top.

So thanks a lot, Charlie, for the wonderful set. I've loved the presentation so far and I'm looking forward to being enlightened by the commentaries and other three discs to some.

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

Alex-C-thanks for posting the pics of your set-that's the same as mine, except, as stated earlier, my edition sticker is BLANK-no number, no nothing, just that foil/mylar sticker, with nothing on it...

Everything else is exactly the same...gee, what could this mean-how many were supposed to be issued in this "limited edition,"...he now asks somewhat suspiciously...

Who knows? It's a mystery to me...

None here, but I've always been lucky with overlapping discs. Waiting for someone to come up with Thinpak cover art, but no rush.

Wow. Totally different experience for me. I noticed soooo many subtle differences between the final cut and the director's cut, but then again, this is my most favorite and most watched movie in my life.

I have the entire movie audio ripped to my ipod so interspersed with my commute music are chapters from Blade Runner.

I am not done going through the set but watching the final cut was an experience I wont soon forget and one that hasn't happened with me and a movie in quite some time.

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

So, finally... my BD 5-disc briefcase arrived from Amazon. Here are a few details:

1. Briefcase and outer plastic arrived in good conditions. No melted plastic on mine.
2. My number is 099375/103000, got one of the last few ones, I see.
3. Everything inside the briefcase was in good condition as well.
4. After seeing the sleeve design in the DVD version, I think I prefer that one to the BD sleeve design (tipical blue plastic case, see pictures).
5. Got the correct Workprint disc, no problems there.
6. Disc 1 (Final Cut) actually came with a tiny little scratch on the disc (!!!). I immediately panicked. However, I have now finished watching the Final Cut and I had no skips, nor any other problems. My BD player was able to handle it fine.

Here are some pictures. Enjoy!

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

Received my HD-DVD briefcase today from HMV.ca. As a heads up to others, I saw some HD-DVD brief-cases in the Pickering Town Centre HMV. Of course, this was after I ordered mine online, but I paid no shipping, so it's ok. I looked inside my set and all looks good. Limited Edition 0868 / 2500 HD ... I like the prints, they look nice. The doors on my spinner are stuborn, and I'm not going to force them. The oragami horse is neat. I don't have projector at the moment, so I'll view this set at a later date...

My discs look ok. Is there something I should look for and be concerned about in terms of the 5th HD-DVD with the workprint?

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

I'm confused: is the 103,000 "limited" total a number just for SD DVDs or does that include the high-res formats as well? I thought it'd mean there are 103,000 SD copies out there, but if the Blu-ray one had a number of 99,375, it must be part of the same total - no way they made 103,000 copies of the briefcase just for Blu-ray!

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

I think that's a total number of briefcases, given that the 5-disc version is available outside the briefcase in both BD and HD DVD. I think case numbers are allocated according to market, as mine was out of 10,000 [Canada].

Yeah, must be. Especially when you consider that Canada's run is only 10,000. I can't believe that theres ten times the entire Canadian run of DVD buyers just for the Blu-ray version in the USA.
