I'll play devil's advocate here. The extended editions of the
Lord of the Rings trilogy were great, but I don't know that I'd have included them on a "best-of" list.
The behind-the-scenes documentaries were exhaustive, but that's pretty much the only supplemental material on the discs. Personally, I am more interested in marketing materials, trailers, original promotional featurettes, music videos--the sort of stuff that was included on the original DVD release of each film. Heck, the four-disc editions didn't even include the original Oscar-winning versions of the films.
I'm told that the DVD producers did not want to double up on any of the material between the two versions, and while I sort of understand this, it means that there is no single, comprehensive
Lord of the Rings release. For that reason, I don't think I could bring myself to call it "the best."
