Exactly! I have been waiting for a release like this ever since I read Paul Sammon's eye-opening piece, "Do Androids Dream of Unicorns? The 7 Faces of Blade Runner," in issue #20 (Nov/Dec 1993) of Video Watchdog. To have him be an active participant (like Charles) in these supplements, not only demonstrates the care and attention to detail given to this project, it is the "icing on the cake," IMO.

Kudos to all involved in the making of this astonishing set! Well done!

How about this happy horseshit?

IGN just posted their Best DVDs of 2007 list, and the new Blade Runner set barely scrapes out one "Honorable Mention" (in the "Best Packaging" category, of all things).

Um, like...WTF??

IGN is the epitome of critics who have little to no knowledge of what they are talking about (Ratatouile dvd of the year? Give me a break!). Just read one of their reviews to figure out how self-contradictory the website is.

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

Tell me about it -- their "Cinephile's Must-Own" award was given to a set that DOESN'T EXIST (to be fair, I think it's a typo that it's labeled "HD-DVD" instead of "DVD"), and the runner-up was. . .

. . .wait for it. . .

CALIGULA!!!

did anyone get both the HDDVD and bluray and compare? I noticed that the HDDVD has dolby digital plus, which is not on the bluray edition.

thanks.

One wonders if IGN did that Best of... thing before they watched the Collectors Edition (for the record it got a perfect 10 from them).

That being said I expect the set to completely sweep the Bitsys.

Thats what I though--though they knew it was coming and ought to have been aware of how extensive it was, so it seems strange that they went on without it. And then they did include it in "honorable mentions" according to people here. Eh. That sites not what it used to be.

This set is awesome, (BR briefcase).
Can anyone speak as to why William Sanderson, (J.F. Sebastian), was not discussed more or interviewed for the release? Thanks.

Methusela's Actor Syndrome. His career got old too fast and died.
Just kidding, I liked seeing him in Deadwood.

So, has anyone discovered a problem with one of the discs in their Blu-Ray set (as was reported a few pgs back) ?

FIX!!!

Weird. And Knocked Up got best extras, instead of BR? Come off it, between just the Dangerous Days documentary and the workprint alone that would've been enough to win best extras, never mind the stuff on the other two discs.

I wouldn't put much weight on what IGN says. For years now the quality has been falling all around their network. From games to DVDs.

So is the 5-disc HD-DVD version available yet longer term or is it limited edition? I cannot seem to find stock of it.

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

I'm in Canada, no Target stores, but I found the suitcase online. I have the non-suitcase edition, but I just ordered the ultimate collection suitcase HD-DVD version from HMV Canada online. I'm in the Toronto area and too lazy to go casing stock down in stores. I guess now I have to sell the simpler HD-DVD 5 disc set. Darn-it! I knew I should have researched before I bought and opened the 5-disc HD-DVD set.

Are there any reports that how HD-DVD compares to the DVD set? Obviously, you'd think the HD-DVD set should look better on an HD display, but you all know how these things go. The stupidest things get screwed up on different versions.

Now that I've ordered the Ultimate 5-disc HD-DVD set, I need to know, does this have everything? I imagine everything on the simple HD-DVD 5-disc set is included in the ultimate collection set? Are the discs themselves identical? I guess I'll wait and see.

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

The only reason I would not award the best DVD set "Bitsey" to Warners for the five DVD version is to punish them for their very crass decision make the standard DVD set available only with the briefcase while selling the various hi-def versions with or without said case. At least that should be noted by the Bits. I'm really torn about buying the case because I do want the workprint and I'm sitting out the format war so any HD version is a non-starter. Argh!

I'm in Toronto too, and I can tell you: it seems the DVD briefcase never even made it here. I pre-ordered from Amazon in November--December 17th, it ships. December 18th, its supposed to be on my doorstep...days go by...the weekend arrives...still no briefcase! The day it came out I was in stores and saw all kinds of Blu Ray and HDDVD briefcases but no DVD, but I didn't think anything of it since I figured mine would be on my doorstep any day. After a week had gone by I decided to just by the damn thing from a retailer and return the Amazon one when it arrived--but again, only the high-def briefcases. I asked three different chains (Futureshop, HMV x2 locations, Best Buy) and they all said they only got the high-def versions--though the 2 and 4-disk sets were plentiful.

Anyway, my briefcase arrived a day or so later, so possibly retailers are just recieving them now. It seems there was a delay in the Canadian shipment for some reason.

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

It's all that and a bag o' chips. The best so really is the monster Doc and Paul Sammons commentary on the workprint. Only thing, I kinda wished there was a bit more on the Vangelis score. It was barely touched upon. After watching nearly all the special features and several people mentioned that it's "his finest score etc.," you would think it would merit a short featurette. I've heard how Vangelis can be a bit difficult though. With it such a huge impact on the film, I'm thinking someone tried to muster something up with no success.

I got the collector's set (HD-DVD) for Christmas. It's great.

I managed to watch the first 15 minutes of the Final Cut, and it looked really good. Should be able to watch the whole thing with my uncle on Friday night.

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

067766 / 103000 for me!

It arrived safely from Amazon, and the outer plastic case around the briefcase was not damaged by heat from Amazon's shrinkwrap-on-cardboard technique because the product was also within a smaller cardboard box that says "Please remove the contents of this carton prior to displaying on store shelf". This extra box totally protected it.

The briefcase is bigger than I expected. I thought it would be the side of two DVD cases side by side. It is that plus another inch, and very thick. Frankly it is pretty ridiculous -- I like the small BluRay and HDDVD cases better.

In related news, that tv I mentioned should be arriving next week. Couldn't resist seeing this properly!

I was at Target yesterday as well, and I saw that they had 4 or 5 of the Blu-rays out on the rack.

I almost bought it, but I'm still a bit worried about getting a bad set (or was that only in Canada?)

Any site that reviewed any version of Blade Runner - 2-disc, 4-disc or 5-disc - but doesn't include it in a year-end top 10 should be ignored for the rest of time. Some sites get political and idiotic with their top tens. Heck, the "Rolling Stone" top 25 is really more of a "my favorite movies" list, not a delineation of the year's best DVDs.

No way the various incarnations of BR shouldn't be in every top 10. It'd be like leaving the LOTR four-disc editions off of top tens: completely ridiculous. Some sets are so amazing that to declare otherwise makes no sense, and this is one of them...

I'll play devil's advocate here. The extended editions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy were great, but I don't know that I'd have included them on a "best-of" list.

The behind-the-scenes documentaries were exhaustive, but that's pretty much the only supplemental material on the discs. Personally, I am more interested in marketing materials, trailers, original promotional featurettes, music videos--the sort of stuff that was included on the original DVD release of each film. Heck, the four-disc editions didn't even include the original Oscar-winning versions of the films.

I'm told that the DVD producers did not want to double up on any of the material between the two versions, and while I sort of understand this, it means that there is no single, comprehensive Lord of the Rings release. For that reason, I don't think I could bring myself to call it "the best."

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

keep in mind the LOTR sets first came out in 2002. And all the useless fluffy marketing stuff was on the original DVD from a few months earlier, with the oscar-winning original cut--they weren't "Ultimate Editions" with everything but the kitchen sink a la BR, they were just for the extended version. At that time there was pretty much nothing beyond 2-disk SE's, so a 4-disk set was as big then as the BR is now.
