The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.) - Page 87

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

My wife gave me mine for Christmas this morning (we're away visiting family right now so we opened presents early). The pics and videos on the web can't do this set justice. It's SO pretty! Mine is listed (can't remember the number)/10000, so I'm guessing that's the run for Canada on SD. Can't wait to put 15+ hours aside to watch this. I think I'll go chronologically.

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

I keep toying with the idea of buying a 37" widescreen tv for this. That's how much I've anticipated this damn film.

But, the prices for LCD tvs hasn't fallen like I'd hoped. Stores know people want them, so they're still sky high.

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

My briefcase arrived from WB in tip-top condition. #000030 of 103000 and Charlie thanks a bunch for you signing it.

I have it exploded in the front room as I type and the amazing Dangerous Days documentary on pause. I've slept maybe 3 hours the last two nights. This one release is one of the primary reasons I joined this forum 6 years ago. It truly is everything a fan could have hoped for and more. Charlie, a lot of love went into this set, it shows. For me to receive it(after all this time) straight from the source(and in relation to the HTF) is just icing on the cake.

As Brett points out, it IS heavy; especially the (upper)lid. I wouldn't fling it open or leave it lying open while flat as I can see the hinges getting weak and pulling away from the bottom. Still the finest dvd set I own, with the Haibane Renmei box set(with pastels) a close second.

I bought my briefcase at BB, and since it won't be opened until Christmas, I can say for certain that it came shrinkwrapped. Also, as far as I can see, no part of the briefcase has melted.

Off-topic discussion really. But there are a lot of threads at HTF on the get-it-now versus wait to better/cheaper gear appears. Nor do I want to introduce my own bias.

Back on-topic, I think the boxset HD version of Blade Runner, at 28 bucks is a fine value. I'm also impressed with the screen and audio qualities of the standard format DVD. This is not one of those titles where the visual difference between formats is a big deal though. Admittedly, this also depends on your setup. If you are projecting on an 8 feet screen, I'm sure the differences between the releases are much more discernible. Regardless, this is not a demonstration quality release for the hi-def format such as King Kong or for an older film, 2001: A Space Odyssey are.

Strange, I've read a review of the HD DVD and it said Blade Runner really needs to be watched in this format.

From the better late than never department: Congrats on winning the briefcase during the chat with Charlie!

I have to wait until tomorrow morning to start diving into this sucker. I just wish I had a HDTV and an upconverting DVD player to watch this on. Maybe next year.....

Well, my take on it is just one man's opinion. I took a couple posted images from DVDBeaver and did my best to crop my SD image sizes to come close to his. Admittedly this is far from an apples to apples comparison as the images are off a frame or two and I have no clue how he captured his images other than I believe they are photographs. However, I wanted to use his images as he had a couple images where light meets dark and Blade Runner is a rather dark film - even when there is a lot of light it is often with shadows.

Eyeball - SD

Eyeball - HD

Office - SD

Office - HD

Clearly the HD version has much stronger blacks coming through and whiter whites and thus more vivid colors. At first blush this looks like a no-brainer difference between the two versions. However, these stronger blacks and whiter whites are NOT what I'm seeing on my WEGA (at least not to that extent). You can judge for yourself, but I think that his images actually do a disservice to the HD image quality while making it appear 'prettier.' I have blue/gray eyes myself but I sure don't have some defined black ring around my eyeballs. Do you? Also check out how the eyelashes now have lost some detail and now look like the actor was wearing mascara along with a large shadow appearing on the left side of the image. This appears to be due to DVDBeaver's method of capturing the hi-def image. That's not a criticism, obviously if he could just do a screen capture, he would have.

Is the detail really that different? Hard to say as the blacker blacks give the illusion of more detail. And the blacker blacks are really overemphasized by the photographic captures. Looking at the left side of the eye (our left, the eye's right) you can see more of a serpent like creature appearing. Whether that is helpful depends on whether you want a serpent-like creature to appear.

In conclusion: the HD image has more life-like colors than DVDBeaver shows. The HD image that I see on my setup is quite good and superior to the SD image as one would expect. How superior it is? At this point, hard to say so each can decide for himself.

If you have a hi-def setup it's a no brainer at 28 bucks. But the question came up ... is this the release that should get me to jump to the hi-def format? My personal view is no.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to All

When I opened my Amazon box the other day (#62,766/103,000), the briefcase was contained in another, slightly smaller box, which itself was shrinkwrapped to a long, thin cardboard slab, with the shipping invoice underneath (similar to how stuff like my Xbox 360 system was shipped from there in past years).

So nope, just the one Amazon shrinkwrap-job (for me, at least), which was over the secondary box; the briefcase proper was evidently shrinkwrapped separately at the Warner Bros. factory.

That all said...this set is the SHIT. We all know where a huge number of "Bitsys" are going in a couple months...

Gary has stated time and again that his method of getting hd screencaps (basically him taking photos straight off his HDTV with a digital camera) is nowhere near as accurate as it should be due to flashes and glare.

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

My 5 disc briefcase showed up today from Amazon. The clear plastic insert with Ridley's letter was cracked. Amazon says I should have the replacement on the 27th. That's good service!

This looks like a nice set, with just a touch of overkill, but I wanted the workprint in standard def. I wish the colors and photos in the booklet matched the DVDs more closely. For instance, DVD 2 has a picture of Rachael while disc 3 has a picture of Roy Batty. However, in the booklet those characters (and the colors) are reversed. And disc 5 doesn't match at all, with a photo of Zhora on the disc and Gaff in the booklet.

I'm currently enjoying Ridley's commentary. It's hard to believe we've never had one for this film.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to All

The caps look right for the HD - I have the BD set.
Agree, it's not a good total excuse to move into HDM, but I used this release as a deadline excuse to be ready.
Glad I Did. A number of titles collected so far are amazing, but my SD collection has many moons to live

Happy Holidays to all the great people here

#068243 arrived from Amazon today in perfect shape no melting, warping, damaged discs, or anything of that sort.

The remastered 70mm mix on the archival editions is awesome but the Final Cut.... whoa. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

I guess I got one of the earlier numbers they had on Amazon for the briefcase: 7372. Plenty more to go after watching Dangerous Days, some of the featurettes, and half of Ridley's commentary.

It's hardly sufficient to say "congratulations" to Charlie and to everyone involved with this. Finally getting to dig into this set clinches for me what was already apparent from the reviews: this is the greatest DVD release in the history of the format.

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

Everybody's raving about the 5-disc set. I bought the 4-disc set. Is the 5 disc really that much better? It's basically just the packaging and the addition of the workprint version isn't it? I personally didn't see that justifying an additional $20.

So the briefcase is only with the SD-DVD version? I picked up the HD-DVD 5-disc version yesterday

Mine arrived yesterday (Dec. 24-talk about cutting it close!!), from Amazon-set is in perfect condition...watched Final Cut and Dangerous Days in one sitting-simply amazing. Thank you, Charles!!
Very dumb question, though-where is the edition number on the SD briefcase set? I can't seem to find it...or see it....eyes are getting old, you see...

You'll find the number on a sticker located on the bottom of the briefcase and it appears in this format: 046531 / 103000. (My number )

Personally, I was a bit miffed about the whole situation when it was announced (having to pay extra for toys I didn't really care for). But in the end, my outlook on it is it's Blade Runner. We've been waiting for this for the better part of the last decade and it's finally here. What's an extra $20 (that probably would've been spent on lesser films) for the workprint and some trinkets?

It's not just the workprint, it is who does the commentary for the workprint.

That, and the "All Our Variant Futures" documentary is truly the cherry on top of this gigantic, tasty sundae, which functions as a sort of "catch-all" capstone to the entire DVD release.

In my opinion, the 4-disc version is unfinished without the Workprint, Paul Sammon commentary (no Blade Runner DVD would've been complete without his commentary insights), and that final doco-piece. Sammon's participation was almost as crucial as Ridley's, in a sense. From the moment the 5-disc version was announced, I knew it was the one for me.

I am relatively new to the Blade Runner. I ordered my 5 disk BOX (not briefcase) from the UK. I didn't want to pay extra for the Briefcase and "toys". In a post earlier, I stated that I was quite happy to get the 5 disk box , in particular, for the Docu "All Our Variant Futures". I highly recommend it

Re: The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

I've only ever watched Blade Runner once in my life, and I pretty much forgot the film, mainly in anticipation of this behemoth and Ridley's final cut, the one he wants me to watch. The film is absolutely astonishing, I'm so glad I waited to see it like this. The picture has been discussed to death: it's top drawer. But, the sound is absolutely enveloping and organic to the picture. It's probably the best 5.1 for a classic I've heard. It just works so well, and it's never artifical.

As for Deckard Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
being a replicant, and I'm basing this on one viewing, it makes sense that he is one. From a story POV, structure is the most important, themes, for example, are organic to character struggles. Everything in a film answers to the controlling idea, or, as I like to call it: thesis, antithesis and synthesis.

Thesis: World-view of the author
Antithesis: Protagonist fighting the author's viewpoint.
Synthesis: Protagonist succumbs to author's viewpoint, with renewed wisdom.

To round the film off, Deckard should be a replicant. For him not to be doesn't work as well, and essentially makes him redundant. It could be any character who hunts them down. Why Deckard? He's working outside the story's controlling idea if he isn't one. That's the way I see it based on one viewing.

Charles, when are you doing Superman?

Yes from me. Guess you have to like the movie first, but judging from this string, it's looking good.

Other than a few quibbles over the dek a rep BS, I'd say a vast amount here love the film and certainly this Grand Slam set.
