HTF House Icon Lost

Thread Starter
I know not how, but the nice HTF green-door house ShortCut icon has reverted to generic Explorer on my desktop. I use IE6.

Starting from scratch (HTF saved in Favorites) what steps are needed to get the HTF green icon back on my desktop. (I dont do this IE manuever everyday, so the "steps" are long forgotten).

edit: using Cut/Paste from Favorites list I got HTF back on desktop but it's still generic E for Explorer.
sigh, i can live with this...in the grand scheme of things

Right click on the paticular favorite and then select properties. Theres an option there to change icon. You can browse for more icons.

Darren, I stumbled upon that generic icon button, but I recall that Parker said this vB or whatever is enabled to produce the actual little house w/ green door. That's what I want.

I think the issue may lie with manipulating the InternetExplorer; for example, on my list of Favorites, some websites stick w/ that site's logo, others just the generic E. And sometimes after recycling the computer, these logos disappear to be replaced with "E".

Bill, I've sent you an email about this. Let me know if it works.

Darren created an htf file for the icon and I successfully installed it.

Hi guys! I am reviving this thread because I have a similar problem, plus a secondary question.

First, I have also lost the HTF icon in my IE favorites. I have tried to add the HTF homepage to my favorites list again, but with no luck. I still just get the generic IE logo.

Secondly, is there a way for me to get the HTF logo on my desktop to use as a shortcut?

Thanks for any help.

Mike...I can help you with getting a (generic) HTF shortcut on your desktop: just click on favorites, then drag your HTF icon onto your desktop. You'll have to make your window small in order to expose part of your desktop first.

As for getting the HTF house there...I don't know. I'd like some help with this myself.

Thanks Jon! But I had gotten that far!

I even got a small version of the house (from the upper left of the home page) on my desktop. It doesn't DO anything...but there it sits!

I'll bet Parker will come to the rescue!

Well, Mike, I dragged my HTF favorite onto my desktop, and there sits the little house icon. It works, too. I've shut down and re-booted the PC a few times, and it's still there.

One day, when I'm not looking, the little house will vanish. And I'll be left with nothing to say but WTF??

Jon: Do you have the little house icon show up on your IE favorites? Mine is gone. So, when I drag the IE favorite onto my desktop I get the generic IE icon as my shortcut.

Congratulations to you!

Yep...it's still there in Favorites, still there on my desktop as well.

I guess!

And, still no Turkey (shudder) Knapp yet, either!

Mike:

All I did was delete the one link that I had in my favorites and then get on the main forum page at
http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/index.php and then save it as a favorite.

Then I minimized my browser windows and then clicked on the address for the forum in the browser window and dragged it to my desktop. The little house icon shows up on my desktop too.

Parker:

I feel like a loser. I deleted all references to the HTF in my IE 6.0 favorites folders...and deleted my desktop shortcut. I created a new favorite and only got the generic Explorer icon. I had no better luck creating the desktop shortcut.

I would say its something screwy with my IE, but another website I just added as a favorite gave me its signature icon in my favorites list and when I dragged it to my desktop, I did, indeed, get the special icon on my desktop.

I am ready to believe the fates are just simply against me. Thank you for giving it the ol' college try, though.

Try this:

Right click on your link in the Favorites section.
Select 'Properties'.
Select 'Change Icon'.
Select 'Browse'
Paste this into the File Name box

http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/favicon.ico

Click 'Open'
The Change Icon window should now have the little house it it.
Click 'OK'
Click 'Apply' then 'OK'.

That should return the proper icon to the Favorite link. It is embedded as a reference in the html of the website. There is a reason why it disappears, and there may be a different way to get it back but I can't recall at the moment. The work around above works for me at any rate.

PaulT! You rule!

Worked like a charm! Thanks VERY much!

Hmmmm. Enquiring minds want to know. Anyone?

OK, searched around and came up with the following...

apparently if you delete your 'Temporary Internet Files' then the favorite icons disappear. You could delete each one and add them again (possibly), try the fix I stated earlier, or try this utility:

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,25471,00.asp

It allows you to lock the icons for good. Note you must register at the site to download it.

Paul: Thanks again for researching this issue. I found a place to easily download the FavOrg program. I think I'll give it a try. I clean out my Temporary Internet Files fairly regularly.

CLick here to go to download page for FavOrg.

Just want to add this post-mortem:

FavOrg works great! Free download. Works great. Seems to be non-intrusive. Helps you find all the stylized icons that should appear with your IE favorites and keeps 'em for you. Great excuse for me to weed out my "favorites" folders, too!

Well...here I am, back at the well three years later with the same problem. I want to get the little house back on my desktop and can't seem to find a way to do it.

I just installed XP and have had to reconfigure/reestablish a number of things.

Everytime I right-click on the desktop shortcut, and go to change icons and enter in:

http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/favicon.ico

I get the message that windows cannot find the file http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/favicon.ico. I'll be darned if I can figure out a work-around.

I'm using Windows XP and Firefox 1.5. Also tried to change the icon in IE and got the same response (that windows cannot find the file...).

FYI, I DO get the little HTF house in my Firefox tabs and it appears in my Firefox bookmarks and bookmarks toolbar.

AND, if I click on the very link in the ERROR message above, Firefox opens up a page feturing the little house.

If the icon shows up in Firefox, it must be on your hard drive somewhere. A Windows Explorer Search for "*.ico" will pull them all up, and you will be able to see which one is which. At that point I suppose you can use the "Change Icon" function, with the local path.

Christopher: Thanks for the try. But while I pulled up a couple-hundred icons off my two drives...none of them were the HTF icon.

Darren: Nope.

Windows can't find file http://www.hometheaterforum.com/favicon.ico.

This is weird. It should work. I know it should work.

Well. If you can't beat 'em...

I just saved the .gif image onto my HDD and linked to it from there.

Thanks, though, everyone. Don't know why I couldn't link to the image the "normal" way.
