(I'm not arguing with anyone's points/ideas, just attempting
clarification on my part)

Exactly, because the general populace could have bought that Mustang the year it came out. Otherwise, that's really a 1961 Mustang when the prototype was being driven around by a few hundred designers/testers (you get the idea).
True, but the
year it came out is a bit vague in our
example here. These movies that didn't come out
in the
US in 2000 did come out in other countries that year,
thereby making it a film of 2000 due to the fact it was
released SOMEWHERE that year.

Equating buying the car years later is the same as watching a film years after it was made generally available. I watched Raiders, Jaws, Rear Window (at the theater even) among others last year, do they go to the top of my list? Of course not, and we aren't saying that. That would be the same as buying your Mustang year's later.
Well, these films were produced in another year, that's why
they wouldn't be considered for 2000.

The only "abitrary" thing being used here is which market we are talking about the product being made available to. Since films go both directions and may arrive years later in different countries, both coming to and leaving from the US, it makes as much sense to pick the US market as any other.
That's why I proposed we choose the year the movie was
produced, not the year that it made it to market. The
automobile example...a 2000 Ford is made in the US;
doesnt arrive in Japan until 2001; the Japanese wouldn't
consider it a 2001 Ford, it's dated in the VIN# as a 2000.
Do not films carry a similar time stamp? Such as the
copyright date?
Quote:
And to help in the choice, much of the HTF membership is American, AND many films have their release dates tailored toward the Academy Awards. That's why their defined year is chosen.
I can agree with this; if we as Americans are choosing our
own personal films and comparing against the Academy then
this is obviously the way films need to be classified for
us as well.

It doesn't make sense to me for us to be comparing/making lists of best films yet choosing from different pools of films.
Agrred as well; I'm attempting to get on the same page as
everyone else.
