I think it's been mentioned, but unlike pretty much every action film of the 1980s (and early 90s), Predator has not aged a day. You could release it tomorrow and it would seem contemporary. Even the camera moves and angles were ahead of their time IMHO. High on my list as one of the best action flicks of all time.

BTW, if anyone can find the LD, the jacket sports some background info on the production. I sold my disc off, but if I recall correctly, Arnie & the boys trained together for several weeks before and during the production.

For those of you in the discussion about who is tougher, the Predators or the Xenomorphs, the Predators take it.

My reasoning is from reading both "Aliens vs Predator" novels. Well, unless they've written more now but, at the time there was only 2 novels.

Anyhoo...the Predators purposely seeded and hunted the Xenomorphs. Not the other way around.

Predators would keep an alien queen alive in one of their space ships. They would collect the eggs and put them on an automated drone ship that they would launch towards a particular planet. After a certain amount of time, Predator hunting parties would descend on the planet to hunt down the Xenomorphs. It was a rite of passage for young Preds'.

After a good hunt, the young Predators would then be "blooded" by the one in charge of the hunting party. He'd take his claw/fingernail, dip it in the molecular acid blood of the dead xenomorph and inscribe on the forehead of the predator, his particular mark. The acid would make the mark and then he'd spit on it to neutralize the acidic action.

BTW Predators are called in the books, Yaut'ja (sp?)

I vaguely remember in the novels a description of a hunting party in action. It described the phenomenal organization and tactics the Yaut'ja used when battling the Xenomorphs. It was pretty amazing to read how well they worked at a well trained unit, destroying enemies. This case, the Xenomorphs.

It's a good read.

Oh yeah, if you look closely in the 2nd movie; when the Yaut'ja is cleaning on of his skulls and sticks it on his trophy wall, when the camera pulls back, you can clearly see a Xenomorph skull! Cool, eh?

(Blows real hard causing dust to fly) Cough, cough!!!

Hey fellas, just thought i'd resurrect my old thread to share some news since my love of all things Predator are about to skyrocket this month!

News from McFarlane toys is that he's releasing a whole line of Alien and Predator figures this or next month! With a rumored 18" edition of the Predator later this year, this news is courtesy of the forums own Rob Lutter. I already have the Alien vs Predator gift set and it's spectacular to behold! If you can find it, grab it, they're going fast from what I understand.

Derrik,

your post is facinating to read I must say, I love extending the Predator world beyond the films and getting into how they behave and hunt. They seem more akin to a tribe of indians who respect the prey they hunt and kill, rather than evil alien monsters who kill for fun and I just love that. I'm curious about something though, in these novels, do they mention anything about these intended planets being inhabited by other higher beings? This would have to be the case because as you know the Queen Alien's eggs contain facehuggers that need a host to yield an Alien. Also, how did the Predator's deal with the other inhabitants?

BTW, am I wrong, or does Jean Claude Van Dam still appear in the film as the camoflaged Predator? The Predator looks very different in some scenes, he's smaller and his head comes to a point, he looks like he has no dreadlocks. My guess is that they already completed those effects shots of Van Dam and didn't want to do them over again, thus costing more money. Am I right?

You probably already know this, but there's a pretty good chance that there's a Predator special edition coming out this summer.

Yup, all over it, thanks Dome.

I've been tracking the progress of this DVD ever since learning about the R2 version, i'm so relieved FOX decided to let us have it as well.

John McTiernan sure went on a tear starting here didn't he? Predator, Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October. That was some string of good flicks. I too have been waiting for the R2 release to be ported over here. It's good to hear that it paid off.

John,

I don't know about the novels, but I have the one Dark Horse Comic book series of "Aliens vs Predator". And in that series the planet that the Predators seeded with Aliens had a human colony raising some type of cattle. The facehuggers used the cattle to gestate. And the Predators sent an adolescent group down to hunt the Aliens without weapons as a rite of passage. And with the humans caught it the middle it became very interesting.

The Predator soundtrack is finally available legitimately from Varese Sarabande. It's a "Club" only release meaning it's limited to 3,000 copies and only available on-line.

Mine should be here next week.

Thanks for the tip, Neil!

Where's the special edition of this film? I thought there was supposed to be one this summer.
Straight from Fox themselves.
Fox has no plans to release the title in question at this time. I will forward your request on the corporate office so they can see what the public would like to see on DVD.

So no R.1 DVD for now.

I just bought the new DTS version of this too and am glad I did. You are right in saying it has fantastic "rewatchability." I think my favorite character in "Predator" is "Billy." The way Sonny Landham plays the role is fantastic and I love his final stand on the tree bridge. The DTS soundtrack rocks too.
