My 'PREDATOR' appreciation thread.

"If it bleeds, we can kill it."

I just finished watching this classic on the new dts DVD, and this movie seems to get better everytime I watch it. Since it's debut back in 1987, I must have seen it more times than I can count, but I still get wrapped up in it everytime! The repeatabilty factor for this film is off the charts and it's also aged very well. I suppose because there really is nothing in the film that dated it to begin with. We have essentially three elements in the film...

1. A group of special forces men who probably still look and speak that way.

2. An alien being where anything goes.

and

3. A jungle.

There's nothing to point to that screams out 80's in particular, not counting Blain's MTV T-shirt and perhaps the effects for the camoflaged Predator, although I have no problem with that in the least.

It's the gritty, rough and tough look this film has that i've always loved as well, and the way the men are portrayed is more realistic than most of these "grunt" types you see in lesser films. They are tough when they have to be, but they're also portrayed as vulnerable, and when they finall realize what's happening and what's after them...they feel fear. They have realistic human dimension's, we feel badly for Mac when Blain is killed. They feel like real men, in a real desperate situation, cut off from the world in a place so vast and imposing they might as well be on the moon.

Arnold is another major contributer to the enjoyment of the film. He's so at home in roles like this it makes me long for him to do just one more. He's tough, but very likable in the role of 'Dutch', a role that plays against his 'Terminator' persona and I like that. Seeing him being hunted instead of the other way around is a thrill for me. The location where they filmed the movie is staggering in it's size and closed off feeling, as 'Mac' put it "I've seen some badass bush before but nothin like this!", agreed. Sadly, I read some time ago that most of that rain forest was gone now, I can't confirm that, but I remember reading it somewhere.

And of course, I can't leave out the man, er um, creature itself, the Predator. What a magnificent creation by Stan Winston, it's one of my all time favorite film creatures ever created by far. It's so real and believable that you actually believe that it's not from around here. I appreciate it's intelligence in the way it goes about dispatching merciless carnage on Arnolds men one by one.

It also has layers to it's personality which I appreciate, it's amazing the sense we get of it's background and the way it hunts just from a few lines of dialogue from the cast. It's not a mindless monster, but a skilled, veteren hunter that respects the game and it's rules. Afterall, it's just not sporting to kill something unless it's armed and poses a threat. It's no coincidence that it decided to start killing Dutch's men when it saw what Mac did to that defensless scorpion. To the creature, these men were aggressive beings that liked to prey on weaker beings...so it decided to show them what it was like to engage in a REAL game.

The look of the Predator's body is remarkable, with it's array of weapons and body armor, including those badass double retractable blades, it's transport computer system that allows it to control both it's camoflage adaptation and that deadly self destruct device, the shoulder mounted plasma cannon that delivers swift blinding death (particularly to poor Blain and Mac), and it's in-helmet laser guidance system guarenteeing pin point accuracy, right down to it's dirty, reptillian, weathered skin covered by it's now trade mark netting. And of course that face only a mother could love, concealed for most of the film behind a gladiator-like breath helmet.

The Predator is a cinematic wonder to behold...

Then there's the incredible score by Alan Silvestri. IMO it's one of the best compositions he's done for a film. It has a heart pounding rythem that commands your attention and doesn't let the tension falter just because the action has for the moment.

And finally, how about that action! The scene where Arnold and his boys all but decimate a small section of thick jungle foliage with bullets is just classic stuff. Then we come to the last half hour of the film, it's sheer bliss, as Arnold prepares to wage war on the creature, smearing his body with mud like warpaint and delivering his battle cry, then watching as the two warriors from different worlds wage a deadly battle of wits against one another, a war only one can survive.

I have no idea why I started this thread, I guess I was just a little excited having not seen the film in awhile, not since I bought the new disc last year. However after watching it just now, I wanted to share my enthusiasm with you about the classic that is Predator.

It still saddens me when I think that the great creature performer Keven Peter Hall is no longer with us (he died shortly after the filming of 'Predator 2' of complications from the AIDS virus he contracted from a tainted blood transfusion), but if you know that it's him in there, I guess he's immortalized forever. IMO he turns in one of the best creature performances ever caught on film.

"You son-of-a-b----!! Still pushing pencils?"

"If it bleeds, we can kill it!

Classic, classic film. Schwartzeneggar at his best. My friends and I still quote from it all the time. I can't believe I don't own this on DVD yet.

"Get back to da chaaaw-paaa!"
"Strap this to your 'sore ass!"

I have to admit, this is one of my favorites, although I love the final section body count of COMMANDO almost as well.

This movie could be released tommorow, and it wouldn't be dated one bit.

"I ain't got time to bleed"

The best 'alien creature hunting men in the jungle for sport' film ever made.

John I agree, its a must for any alien beastie collection.

Also check out the best 'alien creature who looks like a supermodel and is hunting men for sex' movie ever made.

Yep! I love this film. I'm amazed I don't own it on DVD yet either. Is there a particular version I should get? Wasn't there a new remastered DVD of this title put out not long ago?

Terrell, yeah, that's the one I have. It boasts a very nice anamorphic transfer as well as DD and DTS audio.

No problem. I almost forgot, their is a big SE planned for this film for R2 that should be released in R1 as well later on this year, or early next year I think. From the specs i've read, it's going to kick major ass!

My favorite Ah-nold film by far. I'll be one of the first to pick up any SE version. Does anyone know if there is a SE version (or a "regular") of the "Running man."? That's my second favorite Arnold film (followed closely by Commando). It also has some memorable lines....

Arnold: "I'll be back!"

Killian: "Only in Reruns!!"

Good stuff.

Michael.

Predator is one of the best, if not THE best, action movie I've ever seen. You can't go wrong with aliens, Ahnuld, Apollo Creed (no, his name isn't Carl Weathers ), Jesse "The Body" Ventura, and "Old Painless".

"He's dug in deeper than an Alabama tick."

"Y'all just a bunch of slack-jawed ---gots 'round here."

"There's somethin' out there...and it ain't no man."

I still use lines like this from Jesse the body and Arnold, and others already quoted in my everyday life. Definately a deep well of quotable lines in this one. An alltime great!

John, nice post, this DVD is definitely on my list!
When that movie came out on VHS I got a copy. Every day after work I would watch that movie. It was on a regular old zenith TV. No surround, just TV speakers. I still loved it and watched it until I had all the lines memorized. That's the only movie I ever did that with. I can remember seeing it in the theater and actually getting the shakes from the amount of adrenaline running through my body!!! My (at the time) girl friend that I was dating asked me what was wrong and I just said "Uh, it's really cold in here." Hahaha. It was a little cool, but not THAT cold.

It was an awesome movie to see at the theater for the first time. Movies that good just don't happen very often at all. Glad to hear they are making a SE version. I haven't picked up the DVD yet, but I might get the SE version and crank it now that I have a decent HT setup.

I love the film, man. When you watch something like The Mummy Returns, people tell you to turn your brain off to enjoy it. Predator is one of those action films that works on every level. Smart, fun, fast, loud....it's got it all.

She's saying this was a lizard? That's a BS psych job, there's 2 or 3 guys out there. F-ing lizard!

Ok so I don't remember the exact quote. Definately great stuff though.

I know P2 didn't hold a candle to 1, but did anyone notice the Alien skull in the Predator's trophy collection?

Eric yeah, that was a special "guest" skull that Fox threw into the sequel. It makes sense since Fox owns the rights to both creatures.

Sean, thanks. I really didn't mean for my first post to go on so long, but I just couldn't stop typing!

"I'm scared."

"Bullshit, you ain't afraid of no man!"

"There's something out there waiting for us, and it ain't no man...We're all gonna die."

As much as I like to think I'm "above" such films, Predator is one of those that I have seen enough times to just about have every line of dialogue memorized. It is one of my all-time favorite movies, and I agree with pretty much everyone's comments here.

I just wish Fox hadn't given up so soon on the franchise possibilities. Predator 2 wasn't bad at all. It just paled in comparison to the first one. I hope they make a third film and/or Aliens vs Predator someday. I can't give Predator enough praise. Simply, the greatest action film ever.
I love Predator too. There is not a wasted moment on screen with no lagging section. Perfect cast, great story, great action. Most other action movies are "slack-jawed fa$$ots" compared to it.
Ahh predator... one of the first movies i ever watched...

My dad had a Pro-logic HT system way back when with a LD player, and one of the LDs was PREDATOR. I still have it, but i got no working LD player to watch it on

If i get more $, this will be one of the top titles in my must buy list... with DTS and all...
The best thing about this film is that you can't find one single dead moment in it. Every scene builds on the previous one and raises the stakes, the script may be the best action-movie script ever written.

IMHO, Predator and Point Break are the best movies you ever gonna see when you just wanna have a good old fast and fun action flic.
anyone remember Jean-Claude Van Damme originally being the Predator?
Thanks for starting this thread, John. I too agree that it is one of my favorite action movies ever. The acting, the lines, the musical score, and definitely the creature are all first rate.

My favorite Arnold movie is the first Terminator. But I keep coming back to Predator again and again. I love it.

Was Van Damme really going to be the Predator?

Van Damm as the Predator!? That's definatly news to me! Van Damm was still an unknown when they began production on this film in 1986, I guess they decided to go with Kevin Peter Hall after seeing his performance as 'Harry' in 'Harry and the Hendersons' right?

That can't be right either, 'HatH' didn't come out until 87 as well. Does anybody know why they chose Kevin for the role? See, this is one question that would easily be answered if we had that SE now.

I can't imagine anyone besides KPH as the preadator, but Van Damm definatly had the skills and agility to pull it off pretty well I think.
I guess because Kevin Pete Hall was huge, and they wanted the Predator to be huge.
Great movie, John.

AAMOF, when me and some friends get together and dare each other but someone won't do it, someone will usually burst burst out with the "... slack-jawed faggots," line.

...And when someone decides to do it, usually against their better judgement, they're sometimes heard saying, " I ain't got time to bleed." Sometimes.

This movie is like a mini Holy Grail in the number of quotable lines. That's saying a lot. KnowwhatImean?

"We're gonna have some fun. We're gonna have some fun. We're gonna have some fun. We gonna ha.... some.... We're gonna ha.... some...."
