Suggestions for anime movies.

Thread Starter
I know there's a thread on anime, but it seems to be primaraly about anime TV shows. It's also hard to read through all the stuff in that thread, since it's so long, and I'm still kinda new to anime and don't know too much about it. I'm more of a movie person too. I have these anime movies on DVD:
Akira
Princess Mononoke
Vampire Hunter D
Perfect Blue
Ninja Scroll
Ghost in the Shell
I'm also thinking about getting these:
Grave of the Fireflies
The Wicked City
Pokemon 1-3
Digimon the movie
Castle of Cagliostro
X
Black Magic M-66
Blood: The Last Vampire
Blackjack
Appleseed
The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb
Shadow Skill
Spaceman
Streetfighter Alpha
Sword for Truth
Tokyo Fist
The Wings of Honneamise
Devilman
Amon Saga
Are these any good? Have any other suggestions? Thanks.

>>Princess Mononoke <<

You may want to check out "Warriors of the Wind", it was done a number of years prior to Mononoke, but the same type of movie, I liked it even more than the Princess.

I beleive it's only available on VHS and from information available on the web, the current version was badly edited (that's the one I have and I thought even that was good) and hopefully a full version will be made available in the future.

You do NOT want Warriors of the Wind. That hack n slash is the reason why Miyazaki did not allow his films in the US for almost a decade. The movie is missing over an hour of footage. Anchor Bay currently owns the rights, and after Disney forbade them to release it uncut they wisely buried the film in their vault so that it can't harm others

Grave of the Fireflies and Wings of Honneamise are 2 of the best films I have ever seen (even if Grave's DVD is mediocre and the video is terrible on Honneamise)

Castle of Cagliostro is also a great movie, and inspired a bunch of chase scenes in Indiana Jones Akira is an experience, probably a rent before you buy thing

You might want to give Barefoot Gen a look. It's an Anime based on the Director's survival of Hiroshima. It's a nice change from all the robots and wizards.

I would reccommend the Evangelion movies, but you need to see the series first.

Glad to see another Gen fan, unfortunately it's quite OOP at the moment, though I'm sure there's still copies floating around. Warning: Do not watch the dub, it's a disgrace to the work, and the subtitles on the DVD are dubtitles (and PURPLE).

Outstanding film though

Question: What is the difference between the Records of the Lodoss War box set and the Chronicles of the Heroic Knight box set? Are the chronicles the sequel to the record or is it just a more complete set of the same material?
Chronicles is a TV series that contains the continuation of the true continuity from the novels. It picks up after episode 8 of the original OVAs and continues from there.

Cool. I saw bits and pieces of Record on German TV once and I really enjoyed it. I've been looking to pick the set up for some time now. It looks like I'll have to put Chronicles on my list as well.

The Wicked City - was alright. Borderline hentai though.

Castle of Cagliostro - Enjoyable adventure film

Black Magic M-66 - If you've seen TERMINATOR then you've seen this. Nothing special.

Blood: The Last Vampire - Great animation/horrible movie

Appleseed - mediocre at best

The Wings of Honneamise - very thougtfull film with supurb animation. Story is a little on the slow side. DVD is horrible quality.

Haven't seen the rest on your to-see list. These are not out yet but I'm looking forward to seeing:
Jin-Roh & Spriggin

Hope this helps.

Jim

I say avoid Pokemon like a plauge. UGH!

Otherwise, listen to those here who know better.

I can tell by your list for the most part, it looks as if you're staying away from the more 'cartoonyish' style anime.
Try the Rurouni Kenshin OVAs (aka Samarui X), you might want to try the Slayers movies for a laugh. That's all I can think of right at the moment.

Oh and try this link, I think you will find it of upmost help: www.animeondvd.com

You know, I was fortunate enough to see the U.S. theatrical debut of this film back in '88 or '89 at SMU. The Director was on hand as well as his son and the stories he told (through an interpreter) were mind boggling. I guess I just can't recommend Barefoot Gen enough, it has a special place in my heart.

(BTW, it's still available at some online sites)

Yes, we had Masao Maruyama as a guest at Otakon this year who worked on the film. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to talk to him Have you ever read the manga? Currently, I'm trying to get in touch with Project Gen to do a proper, subtitled version of the film, and possibly of the live-action version (which I have only found mention of).

Jeff,

That would be great. I wish I could help. Unfortunately my film professor who arranged the U.S. screening, Dr. William Jones, passed away a few years ago. Please keep me posted on any updates for this incredible film.

I'd also recommend the Kenshin OVA's (Trust & Betrayal). I know it's not a "movie", but neither are most of the shows you mentioned in your original post. I just watched it again tonight, and I just can't get over how powerful it is. The animation is superb, and the story is deep and emotionally moving. You should watch it subbed though. Everyone here knows I'm not nearly as anal as some when it comes to dubs, but the dub here is translated very incorrectly in spots (at one point even changing how we are supposed to view Kenshin) and the acting isn't anything to brag about either.

I second Grave of the Fireflies, really moving film.
Also check out "Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer", which is available on DVD from Central Park.
