Track the Films You Watch (2013)

--This list is for keeping track of each film you watch throughout the year. Feature films and short films released from any year.

--Lists can have any format the poster wants but normally we keep the dates viewed, star rating as well as the year the film was released. Some might also select to keep track of which titles are new views. All of that is up to the poster.

--Feel free to discuss the films you're watching

Please note: if you are going to participate please send a PM to Adam Gregorich so he can make the necessary changes to allow editing of the lists.

Feature Films Watched in 2013First-Time Viewings are in Bold(And dates are in the format dd/mm/yy - I'm a New Zealander, that's how we format dates here) I'm not a fan of giving a film a star rating, so in the past I've just given films a thumbs-up or thumbs-down, with two-thumbs-up for films I loved, two-thumbs-down for films I hate, or thumb-up-thumb-down for films I'm mixed on. Just finished watching TCM's Essentials showing of To Have and Have Not (1944) Never seen it. I really enjoyed it. Lauren Bacall had a great screen presence. Both Bacall and Bogart had great chemistry. A must see movie.

On Monday the 21st I'll be starting my "Tribute to Steven Spielberg" project whereby I hope to watch all his directorial theatrical releases starting with Duel (a TV movie in the US but expanded and released theatrically overseas) and going up to last year's War Horse. I may even try to catch Lincoln again in the theater. Of the 28 films there 'll be six first-time viewings. It was Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark that really made me fall in love with movies in a way no other film - not even Star Wars - had done, so I have a real affection and admiration for the man. I hope Lincoln nets him his third directing Oscar and that it takes the top prize too. The line-up will be
Duel
The Sugarland Express *
Jaws
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
1941
Raiders of the Lost Ark
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Twilight Zone: The Movie (directed segment 2)
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
The Color Purple *
Empire of the Sun *
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Always *
Hook
Jurassic Park
Schindler's List
The Lost World: Jurassic Park

I like your idea! I spent a wonderful day at The Cinerama Dome in the early 1990s when they had a "Spielberg Day". All in one day they showed: 1941 Jaws Back to the Future (producer only, obviously) Raiders of the Lost Ark Close Encounters You could either buy all the shows as a package or just the ones you wanted. Jaws, Raiders and Close Encounters were sold out and competition for seats was fierce! I had a great time and of course this was long before digital projection and it was all glorious celluloid. It was one day only but I'm sure they could have run it for a week at least. Raiders and Close Encounters both really benefit from a big, big screen. Jaws, too, actually; I felt a little seasick during parts of it. Great memory. Of course I also remember my sore backside after about 13 hours in the theater. :) A small price to pay...

From what you haven't seen, I actually liked THE TERMINAL in a Frank Capra type of way. I didn't like THE COLOR PURPLE, AMISTAD or ALWAYS. I guess ALWAYS isn't too bad but the original is a little better. I haven't seen the other two either. I keep meaning to revisit 1941 at some point. I was going to revisit the JP films but I realized that the original is coming back to theaters so I guess I'll wait for that.

May I respectfully ask: what did you not like about THE COLOR PURPLE? I thought that was a really good movie.

Cut and paste job from when I watched it for the first time last year: THE COLOR PURPLE is hailed by many to be a complete masterpiece but to me I found it way too pretty for its own good. I'm going to place 100% of the blame on director Steven Spielberg because I think he simply made this film way too pretty with way too many melodramatic moments and moments where he just seems to be reaching for the sky. When I say he's reaching for the sky, I'm basically saying that he wants every single scene to be some sort of major, emotional pay-off and it just doesn't work because it makes the material seem over-dramatic and fake. There really wasn't a single moment in this film where I had an emotional connection to because Spielberg wanted every single scene to be something epic. Usually these big moments happen at the end of the film or there might be two or three scattered throughout the running time. With this film trying to have one every minute, whenever something big does happen it's power is just drained from everything else that has been going on. I also think the film runs on way too long as there are so many sequences that could have been cut and they wouldn't have hurt the main story. What keeps the film moving are the terrific performances with Goldberg and Winfrey really standing out with their wonderful work. Glover is also very effective in his bit, although I'd say he was underwritten throughout the picture as just the villain. The cinematography here as well as the costume designs are major pluses but in the end THE COLOR PURPLE is just too safe for its own good. :star::star:

I like The Color Purple well enough but I think it's more out of interest to see Spielberg growing as a filmmaker than anything else. I never got into Jurassic Park when I was young but seeing it again on Blu-ray, I liked it much more than ever and I'll definitely check out the 3-D re-release this year. The Lost World wasn't as bad as I remember (I HATED it when I saw it in the theater) but it's still probably Spielberg's weakest movie. A more minor Spielberg movie that I don't think gets enough credit is Catch Me If You Can. I just saw it again recently and enjoyed it quite a bit.

You're supposed to watch the films THEN list them. Otherwise I might as well list my entire collection.

Funny you mention Catch Me If You Can; I didn't think much of it when I first saw it in the theater, but recently I was stuck overnight in a hotel because of bad weather and that happened to be on the free movie channel. I enjoyed it much more and actually bought the blu-ray.

Original Air date: November 13, 1971

At age 22 Steven Spielberg signed a contract with Universal Studios which had him directing episodic television. His first TV assignment was one of the segments of the Night Gallery pilot, the story "Eyes," which starred Joan Crawford. Crawford was quoted as saying, ""Go interview that kid, because he's going to be the biggest director of all time!" In 1971 the "kid" directed the "Murder By the Book" episode of Columbo, the first series episode to air. In his book "The Columbo Phile", author Mark Dawidziak quotes Columbo creators Richard Levinson and William Link, and Emmy-winning Stephen Bochco, who wrote the episode, as saying this is their favorite Columbo. Dawidziak states "Murder By the Book" is probably the best episode of the best season of TV's best detective series. Spielberg took the rough cut of "Murder by the Book" (the episode hadn't even aired yet) to producer George Eckstein and landed the job for directing Duel, an ABC Movie of the Week, based on a novella by Richard Matheson (who also wrote the teleplay) that was previously published in "Playboy." As the cliche goes, the film put him on the directorial map, and was a Golden Globe nominee for Best Television Movie.

David Mann (Dennis Weaver) is a businessman traveling to an important meeting. When he passes a slow-moving tanker on the highway the truck's driver takes offence, and instigates a cat-and-mouse chase which will ultimately leads to a duel to the death. A seemingly simple premise is given top notch direction by Spielberg, who never lets up on the tension. The film's arresting opening sequence follows Mann, in a point of view shot, as he pulls out of his pitch-black garage and moves through the city and eventually the rural highway. He then does what so many have done before on the road and his nightmare begins. The suspense is nicely built as the unseen driver at first seems merely annoyed (he passes Mann and then slows down again) but then makes his true intentions known, as he waves for Mann to pass him - right into the path of an oncoming vehicle. There is no where for Mann to turn, no witnesses to his plight. The film is so effective because any driver can relate to this scenario, and has perhaps been on the receiving end of road rage, of which this is the ultimate example.

Even though the driver is given little motivation other than he's "crazy," the film establishes that the villain does have some sort of code by which he is operating. Any time Mann tries to leave his car to get help the driver threatens to harm those who might help Mann. But during a key scene where the trucker could easily just demolish Mann's car and leave him stranded, the trucker merely scares off the potential help and waits for Mann to return to his car. This battle is literally Mann versus machine. And Speilberg shoots the final confrontation beautifully, as he closes in on Weaver's desperate, pleading, hysterical face. The radiator hose has malfunctioned on Mann's car forcing him to slow to a crawl, as the tanker approaches. It's a sweat-inducing sequence that can rival any big-screen action finale.

In fact Duel was so successful that it was expanded from its original 74 minute running time to about 90 minutes for an European theatrical release. Spielberg added scenes involving a stranded bus and an attack at a railway crossing. Both these scenes work very well and do not slow down or impede the pace. Thanks to Duel's critical and commercial success, Spielberg, after two more TV-movies, would make the move to theatrical releases.

Released: April 5, 1974

The Sugarland Express is based on the true story of Ila Fae Holiday and Robert Dent (given the name Poplin in the film), a couple who kidnapped a Texas patrolman after Dent's wife sprung him from a prison farm. The couple wanted to get back their toddler son, who had been placed in foster care, and led the Texas authorities on a cross country chase in the patrolman's stolen police car. They are naive and sympathetic as their crimes had never involved violence and they only want their family together. But obviously this story cannot have a happy ending. The film won Best Screenplay at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival and was also nominated for the Palme d'Or.

Spielberg directs with a light touch, although there are disturbing themes beneath the surface. There is much humor throughout the film, such as when a bickering elderly couple are left stranded on the highway, or when the Poplins argue over the most trivial things in relation to the situation they have created. There are well-staged car chases and gunfights that are supposed to be amusing. Overall the film is quite entertaining, with great camerawork, such as when the camera catches two cars travelling parallel and having a conversation via their radios; strong performances by Goldie Hawn and William Atherton as the couple and Ben Johnson as the sympathetic lawman; and amusing touches such as when the couple enjoy a Road Runner cartoon playing on a drive-in screen, with Atherton providing the sound effects. Also of note is that John Williams provides the music and that this is the first film [background=rgb(251, 251, 251); color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 18px;]to have a [background=rgb(251, 251, 251); color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 18px;]front-to-back seat tracking shot[background=rgb(251, 251, 251); color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; text-align: -webkit-auto;].

Viewing the film today however reveals some moments that leave a bad taste in the mouth. At one point some self-appointed deputies open fire at a used car lot where the couple and their hostage are hiding. The gung-ho shooters don't seem to know or care what they're firing at or what damage they are causing. Their "yee-ha" attitudes and slapstick reactions tell us we're supposed to be laughing. But, perhaps in light of the present focus on gun violence, the scene is uncomfortable and doesn't seem to be consistent with a later scene, where Ben Johnson's character does more than just chastise the trigger-happy group. Ultimately, the ending really feels out of synch with the tone of the rest of the film, even though it's utterly believable.

Thus The Sugarland Express is a technically accomplished theatrical debut for director Spielberg and shows his talents behind the camera. The film suffers from a mild case of confusion in playing comedy against tragedy. But his next film would confirm what Joan Crawford had said 5 years earlier - "...he's going to be the biggest director of all time!"
