Is the AMC Garden State in NJ no longer an Atmos location? The NYC AMC Empire wasn't one of the original Atmos locations, but now it is and the Garden State's not on the list...

Yep, it will be in 3D, ETX, 48fps, ATMOS near me. Going to see that this weekend; for tonight at Midnight, I've got to see it in the theater I love.. sorry, but the ability to order real food and sit in a barcolounger while I watch is necessary for a midnight show!

Landmark? those rule!
I'm seeing it IMAX 3D 48FPS on Saturday in NJ, had I known about the Paramus location I would have reserved it for there instead. I will try to run down to Tysons Corner in the next few weeks if I can tho to hear it in Atmos!
Thanks for changing the thread title Ron! This is now the official Atmos discussion thread!

I've been less than impressed with Dolby Atmos. I've seen Brave, Taken 2, and Life of Pi, all at the same theater. The only time I noticed obvious effects was during Taken 2 and a scene of fireworks that were overhead.
Maybe The Hobbit will be better.

Here in KC I've got two options.. AMC does a thing called "Cinema Suites", it's a wing of their Olathe theater set aside with dinner service, beer/wine, pub food.

Then you've got the Drafthouse in the Plaza, which is also spectacular.

Theaters that seat about 40, adults only, beautiful screens, and the only way to see a flick. Flat out, if you were to ask me what invention in the theaters has been better, 3D or Atmos or Cinema Suites, I would tell you Cinemasuites. It's the one thing worth the extra money, to sit in great seat no big crowd, dead quite and adults to watch a film? There is no technical accomplishment out there that tops that, period.
(And you know this if you've seen any action film in the theater with teens hanging around)

I think a lot of that depends on the theater itself and the equipment they're using. We have a new Atmos install going in a fairly state of the art theater being build nearby. I am hopeful it will measure up to the awesome experience we had at Dolby's two screening rooms.

Very happy to hear Atmos has expanded to Northern VA. I was gonna see "Hobbit" Atmos while I'm in NJ, but I promised my Dad I'd wait and see it with him over Christmas, so that plan went out the window. Now I can see whatever the NEXT Atmos release will be at a local screen! (Still haven't seen ANYTHING Atmos...)

The Atmos trailers sounded fine in this theater, and the theater is a first-class digital auditorium (the so called XD Xtreme Digital auditorium at a Cinemark theater).
But the sound is definitely front focused. In Life of Pi, for example, the waves crashing over the boat before it sank were immersive, but I have heard equally good sound in 70mm 6-channel Dolby as far back as 1989 (thinking specifically of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). It did not help having speakers overhead during Life of Pi.
I noticed that an AMC IMAX theater locally has HFR 3D and Dolby Atmos for The Hobbit. I may go out of my way to see it there.

Bottom line is that it creates a 3d matrix of speakers creating fully positional audio including from overheads using full range speakers

Saw The Hobbit in Atmos (and 3D HFR) in Century City AMC. The sound was awesome but...way too loud. I had ear fatigue after it was done. Not quite the "just been to a concert and I have ringing in my ears" but close. The sound of steel on steel, or glass breaking was, for me, *too* brittle/high/shrill. It actually hurt my ears. I'm not going to blame it on Atmos, but probably someone not calibrating it properly to reference volume (louder is better!).

BTW, this is a bit off-topic, but does anyone have a link to a site that lists screen sizes for various real IMAX screens? I found the dimensions of the Lincoln Square screen via the "IMAX vs. Liemax" discussions, and I dug up a page that compares the Smithsonian screens, but I'd love to see the dimensions of all the US real IMAX screens...

Unfortunately the Atmos Theater in my town is still under construction so I have yet to see a movie with Atmos. Even more unfortunate is that they are going to charge a hefty premium for movies that are shown in the Atmos Theater so I do not know if I'll be using that theater very much.
