"Turner Classic Movies and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment are proud to present The Jean Arthur Drama Collection. This four-disc set, exclusive only to tcm.com, includes Whirlpool (1934), The Most Precious Thing in Life (1934), The Defense Rests (1934) and Party Wire (1935).

Most movie lovers know Jean Arthur for her delightful comedic performances in such key films as The More the Merrier (1944) and for her unforgettable work for director Frank Capra (Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939). The actress was capable of playing any type of role convincingly and had plenty of training behind her with more than 50 shorts and feature films by the time she signed and made her debut for Columbia Pictures in Whirlpool (1934). THE JEAN ARTHUR DRAMA COLLECTION showcases the actress's early promise in four rare but striking dramatic features from her Columbia years including Whirlpool (1934), The Most Precious Thing in Life (1934), The Defense Rests (1934) and Party Wire (1935).

Presented for the first time on DVD, digitally restored and remastered, these four features showcase Arthur’s range and virtuosity at an early stage in the sound era, playing everything from melodramas (Whirlpool) and tearjerkers (The Most Precious Thing in Life) to courtroom dramas (The Defense Rests) and morality tales (Party Wire)."

No offense to Jean Arthur fans, but I would rather this have been a Joan Crawford Drama Collection. I thought it was because I had read the title too fast.

No offence to Joan Crawford fans, but I'm glad this is a Jean Arthur collection. I'm particularly glad it's her early movies.

I presume her recent comedy collection must have done reasonably well to come out with a dramatic collection so soon. She's one of my favorites, so I'll be in for a copy.

Much as I enjoy things like "Sadie McKee", give me a tight little early '30s Columbia Poverty Row drama with Jean Arthur any day over virtually any MGM Crawford drama from the same period.

They still haven't released John Ford's The Whole Town's Talking (1935) with Arthur and Edward G. Robinson. And what's equally astonishing to me is that while they're digging deep and releasing these obscure Jean Arthur films, ones with Barbara Stanwyck, 4 of them directed by Frank Capra, still haven't seen the light of day. Hopefully a Stanwyck collection with her early films is in the works!

I imagine an Early Capra set is just a matter of time now that it seems the Sony/TCM collaboration is continuing after the UPA cartoon set. However, I agree that the lack of The Whole Town Is Talking is a real mystery with so many other Jean Arthur getting released.

I recall someone at Sony stating that the Whole Town is talking would be released as a double feature with another John Ford movie they had in their library.

I would certainly hope so, though an ideal Ford set of the Columbia offerings would also include both the unreleased Gideon of Scotland Yard and Two Rode Together. I'd rather they did not double-dip with The Long Grey Line or The Last Hurrah, however unless they got a remaster.
