Quick question about cross-over

I know crossovers have been discussed a million times and I know what it does but one thing that hasn't been all clear to me is the following.

If my Mains are set to 80Hz, that means that anything ABOVE 80 Hz is being played by the Mains, right?

A subwoofer set to 120 Hz means that anything BELOW 120Hz is being player by the sub?

Doesn't that mean than all sounds between 80 and 120Hz are being played by all speakers at the same time, including sub?

Thanks

No. The 120 hz you see for the sub is not a crossover. It is a high pass filter and is only for the .1 (LFE) channel. It means that nothing above 120 hz will be played for the LFE channel only. It has nothing to do with the offloading from the other speakers.

Ah! So if you set your Mains to 80Hz, it simply means that they will play anything above 80Hz.

And the LFE 120 Hz means that the sub won't ever go past 120 Hz, got it!

Thanks!

The 2 settings have nothing to do with each other. The 120 hz is ONLY for the .1 channel. The sub will still play everything sent to it from all of the other channels.

It's kinda hard to explain and I'm not sure I'm doing the best job....
