New York, NY - February 15, 2012 - Kino Lorber is proud to announce the Blu-ray and DVD release of Céline Danhier's film, Blank City (2010), a documentary that examines the downtown scene in New York's East Village during the late 1970s through the mid-1980s. Blank City premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and was an official selection at Viennale, Tribeca and AFI Fest.
Blank City comes to Blu-ray and DVD on February 21st (with a SRP of $34.95 for the Blu-ray, and $29.95 for the DVD), loaded with special features including an interview with director Céline Danhier, deleted and extended scenes that expand on interviews featured in the film, outtakes, and a trailer.
During the late 1970s and into the mid 1980s, New York's East Village, with its cheap rent, offered a haven for cutting edge artists, filmmakers, musicians and performers.
Packed with interviews with some of the most notable figures to emerge from the underground music, art and film scene in New York at that time (including, among others, Jim Jarmusch, Debbie Harry, Steve Buscemi and Lydia Lunch), Blank City tells the story of that remarkable time and place where these artists lived, worked, and experimented in bold new art across different media.
Tracing the underground scene from its origins with the New American Cinema of filmmakers like Jack Smith and Jonas Mekas in the early 1960s, through the "No Wave Cinema" and the "Cinema of Trangession" movements, Blank City shows how the music, film and art informed each other's work. These films were largely DIY affairs, shot on shoestring budgets, that were profoundly influential on the development of independent film as we know it today.
Featured interviewees include Jim Jarmusch, Debbie Harry, Steve Buscemi, John Lurie, Fab 5 Freddy, Thurston Moore, Richard Kern, Lydia Lunch, Amos Poe, Maripol, and John Waters.
