The 2012 American Idol #11 HTF RAF MEMORIAL TOP TEN CHALLENGE

Thread Starter

And we're back!

Sadly, not with our founding organizer Robert Fowkes back at the helm, and this year's challenge is named and held in his memory. RIP, RAF.

On a brighter note, I am pleased to be able to announce that our owner Adam has again kindly agreed to sort out a prize for the winner, so many thanks to him and the sponsors!

Now onto the Rules, which are mostly the same as before:-

The "Rules":

When the number of contestants is whittled down to the Final 12, entries will officially open.
At that time you will be asked to submit a list of the order in which these top ten entrants will finish. Entries will close when the "Final 12" start to perform (at 8pm EST on Wednesday, March 7, 2012). Only ONE entry per member.

  • List your top ten in numerical order (1-10). Please use the names as listed on the roster below (when posted).
  • Your list must be unique. No duplicate lists allowed. For duplicate lists, first submission gets that list.
  • Once you submit a list, it is FINAL. No edited lists are allowed (unless your original list is invalid due to a mistake or a duplication.)
  • Scoring is as follows: You are assigned 1 point for each position that your prediction is away from the final position of each contestant. For example, if you predict a contestant to come in 3rd and he or she comes in 7th you get 4 points. If that contestant comes in 12th you get 9 points. A 2nd place finish gets you 1 point. And so forth.
  • Lowest total points wins (with a score of 0 points being the best possible score.)
  • In the event of a tie the contest winner will be the entrant who was the fewest spots away from picking the winner. If it's still a tie, then we'll move down the list and determine who was closest to predicting the second spot, and so on, until the tie is eventually broken.
  • Members of the HTF staff and their significant others are eligible to participate, but only for glory and not for the prize package. All other members of the HTF community in good standing may enter and compete for the prize.

Entries close at 8:00p.m. EST on Wednesday, March 7, 2012. No exceptions please.

Here are a couple of words of explanation regarding this particular contest and the rationale behind the setup.

  • American Idol, as many of these reality shows, is known for its unpredictability so it is quite possible that an ousted "survivor" might return. This is quite possible, with the Judge's Save rule being in force, and having been used previously.  One season, two contestants were voted off the same night so instead of a "5th" and "6th" position we decided to assign two "5.5" positions for the purposes of scoring. That's why the rules clearly specify the "final" position of ouster for each contestant. It's not over until it's over, and who knows what twists this season will bring? Or if it's a Final 13 (or whatever), entries open when that Final xx is confirmed and close when they start performing.  And if there are unforeseen circumstances we will make a determination that will be fair to all entrants as much as possible. (Otherwise we will return your entry fee  ).

There are probably other things that we haven't thought of but we can deal with them as the show progresses. The one thing that I ask of all entrants (other than making sure that their list is unique) is that you follow the following format when submitting your entry:

01. Contestant
02. Contestant
03. Contestant
04. Contestant
05. Contestant
06. Contestant
07. Contestant
08. Contestant
09. Contestant
10. Contestant

--------------------------------------------------

Some specific caveats because I'm organising and not RAF as in years past:-

1. As is obvious from my "location", I don't live in the US; my timezone is 13 hrs ahead of EST, and AI is broadcast "the next day" at prime time here, in effect during the morning after each show has already been aired in the US.  So as not to spoil my enjoyment of the show (such as it is), I trust you will not begrudge allowing me to view the shows spoiler-free in my timezone, but this means I cannot compile results until the next day after I have viewed the results show.  So unless you do your own calculations, you won't get an updated leaderboard immediately.

2. I am clueless with Excel, so can't provide spreadsheets as Robert did and I just compile results manually.  As an aside, I would be most grateful if participants could please check your own results for any math errors on my part, just in case: I do my best, but I'm not an accountant... tongue.gif

3. I am not a moderator so I can't 'acknowledge' receipt of your predictions by editing your post to mark them as having been submitted (since I can't edit other members' posts).  What I'll do instead is keep a list of participants in the next post, which I will edit as we go along once entries have been recorded by me, by noting that the participant's entry has already been entered.

As before, please submit a PLACEHOLDER in this thread so we can see what sort of response we're getting to this year's challenge; hopefully it'll match last year's participation.  Once you reach the point of submitting your entry, you can modify the "placeholder" post to submit your entry, but note that it's still first-come first-serve insofar as entries are concerned and an earlier-posted placeholder has no effect.

I think that covers it, but if there's anything I'm sure we can reach a consensus as to how to deal with unforeseen issues.  And if we can't, HTF moderators have the final say.

Well, this is going to be fairly random. I haven't been paying much attention, and none of the contestants is really blowing me away.

I have a good feeling about this!!! smile.gif

01. Hollie Cavanaugh (Got a hunch that a nonthreatening blondie will take it this season.)
02. Jessica Sanchez (Risky pick due to age, but she'll be popular if she keeps it together.)
03. Colton Dixon (Rockers rarely make it further than this.)
04. Erika Van Pelt (Awsome voice, but. . .purple garbage bag! And it's very risky to put a Judge's wildcard this high.)
05. Phillip Phillips (May go higher, but the one-trick-pony schtick may get old with voters.)
06. Shannon Magraine (I'm nervous about not having a country chick go higher than this. Age may hurt, though, and there's Skylar too. . .someone's gotta not make the cut though.)
07. Jermaine Jones (What can I say; I like the voice. smile.gif )
08. Elise Testone (Could go higher but loses major points for that ridiculous rendition of Sweet Dreams.)
09. Hee-Jun Han (Hee hee!)
10. Skylar Laine (Moving her up. . .country chicks stay in the game.)

As for the rest of you, come on in, there's nothing to lose!  OK, maybe the ignominy of "suckage" if you finish dead-last... biggrin.gif

If you're talking about last week, that wasn't Elise who sang that horrible version of "Sweet Dreams" - it was another contestant who didn't make it through to the top 13.

After watching last night's episode, I think I short-changed Hollie's longevity in my line-up. Doh!

So everyone who submitted a placeholder entered, many thanks!  Sadly, no-one else joined us.  Oh well, may the best man win!  (And that's not an un-PC comment, all participants this time are men... not sure what that means... confused.gif )

Oops. . .well, I guess I'll take away the points instead because her chin frightens America.

I had two of the bottom three right with Elise and Jeremy.

So far, I'm "perfect" having picked Jeremy to go in the 13th spot. biggrin.gif (I know it's meaningless in this game).

Our first results of the new season!  Sorry for the delay, I was away this weekend.

Yee Ming 3

Tony D 0

Carl Miller 3

Aaron Silverman 0

NolanJ 3

Patrick Sun 0

Phil Taylor 0

Jeffrey_H 4

Tony, Aaron, Patrick and Phil stay perfect, while Jeffrey currently brings up the rear at 4.  And 3 of us put Jeremy at #10 so got hit for 3.  Obviously nobody rated Jeremy really highly, so no big hits so far.  On the other hand, if Elise gets into trouble again next week, some had her in the top half of picks so there would be some big hits.

How we gonna score the Jermaine getting booted? He isn't actually getting "voted off" .... ???
What happened with him?
He is apparently from somewhere neer Philly and one of the locals had been running his family on the news but no mention of him geting kicked off.
If they do kick him off, they might not eliminate anyone else this week, or might bring back another wild card -- they'll have to make up the position somehow.

I think I originally had him outside the top 10 but moved him up due to personal preference. Oh well. . .

Hmmm... that's an interesting "twist".  Would have been standard fodder for a Mark Burnett production, but this isn't one.

Let's see how they handle it first.  But if he is indeed booted off, in effect as a DQ, then here's how I propose to handle it: in effect, with a DQ for violation of Idol rules, Jermaine should never have been allowed onto the performance shows (i.e. into the top 24/25, let alone top 12/13).  We therefore treat it as if he never appeared.  This means anyone who selected Jermaine in their top 10 will have him removed from their predictions, and everybody else on their list moves up one place.

Carl, Nolan, myself and Patrick are unaffected, since we omitted Jermaine, or ranked him #11 or lower.

For the rest, the now-vacant #10 spot is filled either by their #11, if one was provided in their predictions -- which applies to Jeffrey, and maybe Tony (assuming Jeremy was Tony's #11), while Aaron and Phil will have to select a new #10.  I know this gives Aaron and Phil a slight advantage, in that they now know not to select Jeremy, but what the hey, we're all friends here and it's just a friendly contest; in that spirit, I can't and won't assume Tony had Jeremy as #11 since the name is unnumbered, and I'll leave it to Tony to confirm whether Jeremy was his #11, and if he wasn't Tony can select a new #10 just as Aaron and Phil will have to.

One final observation: on this handling, Jeffrey will take an additional point hit since Jeremy, his #9, will move up by one.  The other 3 of us who took hits off Jeremy omitted Jermaine entirely so are not affected.

But until confirmation from this week's shows, none of the above goes into force.  Also, if there are strong objections to my proposed handling of the potential situation, I'm open to suggestions and if another consensus can be reached, that's fine too.  Either way, I'd like to hear everyone's views on the above.

Since it was already an 'expanded' top 13, and someone's already been booted out (Jeremy), I'd guess they won't make up the numbers, or to fit the programming schedule, since one less elimination means one less week of shows, they either give Jeremy a reprieve this week, or when they use the judges' save, the following week will not see a double-elimination to 'make up' for the save.

If Jeremy is given a reprieve, then per existing rules of our contest, last week's results are nullified, per my suggestion above we fill in missing #10s in prediction lists as need be, and continue as if nothing had happened.

Oh, that makes sense -- not doing a double-elimination after the judges' save. But is there a judges' save this season, or did they shoot that wad with their three wildcard saves?

Joshua is my new #10. I think I've been pretty vocal about my feelings regarding the other two. smile.gif
